I think you'll find that star rating is more of a measure of object density than a difficulty rating. Any given star rating can have a wide range of difficulty levels depending on the length and patterning. When you compare one 4star chart to another, their difficulty levels might not actually be that close. BPM can be a useful metric to use as can working to understand patterning and what kinds of patterns are difficult for you at a given speed or density.

But with all that being said, don't hold your breath on star rating getting better out of nowhere. Thats probably somewhere on the Soon (tm) list as it has been for years.

if a sr rework would ever come out in the next 1-2 years it'll probably be the work of a member of the community. Hydria is currently working on his own mania sr rework, so when it becomes useable enough it could be implemented to mania

Does Hydria have a writeup on what his SR rework would entail?

Status of it:

fwiw I've been working on SR and PP myself for a while now and nowhere close to decent results. While I know there is a limit to how fast you can tap, I have absolutely close to no idea what other factors cause hits to be more or less all over the place. Something as simple as plain chords is giving me a hard time figuring it out.

there used to be a google docs document about it with a few thousand beatmaps and what their new sr's would be. sadly i can no longer access this document because hydria seems to have hidden it for some reason.

as brought up by abraker, i believe this project is inactive now. from what i remember it was a lot better than the current sr; the idea was to keep the current farm charts at high srs while buffing everything else alongside it. so farmy things like triumph and regret were kept at around 5.5*, while technical things like tetsuo's redemption went up to more than *6.2 from *5.2. this is just my memory so it might be wrong.

just because it is currently inactive doesnt mean will remain this way; i still believe hydria will finish their project before any projects by the main osu dev team are done. hydria also acknowledged the last updated state of the sr algorithm he was working on was somewhat unbalanced; there is room for improvement, though in fairness this is to be expected in any development project.

as mentioned by abraker, any sr system takes a lot of effort to balance out so i do not see this being finished any time soon. it probably will be done sometime though.

Interesting. While I'm not about to hold my breath over it, its good to hear the community isn't just lying down and idly accepting the poor state of some aspects in osu!mania.
