what are kudosus and how can you earn them?

Kudosu is a reward system for modding. It awards points for successful mod posts in beatmap discussions. Accumulated points can be seen on a user's profile page.

they are generally considered to be worthless after the death of modding v1 though.

Kudosu is also used as one of the basic criteria to join Beatmap Nominators (BN).

Aside from that, it's for flexing purposes. You can pretty much tell by their kudosu history if they're busy or inactive
