I convinced a few of my friends to try it, they stopped pretty quickly, and i don't really mention osu! too much in conversations with my friends.
My dumb friends think being able to play a 4 star with mouse means you are a god in fps
Some of real life friends know what osu is because I forced them to see the game n learn a bit about it 
My friends kind of understand the game but don't really find it something they can get into.
One of my other friends knew about the game already so when I picked it up - they picked it up too and we've been playing and learning together since.

Almost everybody that I'm friends with at least knows about what osu! is. It's kind of hard not to, considering that I used to play it in the middle of the cafeteria with my back turned to everyone else other than my circle of friends. Some people even walked up behind me and went "Holy (sugar honey iced tea), that is SO cool!" when I was playing osu!mania a few times.

My friend saw me playing osu at school and went “is that osu” and a different friend brought me back into osu
I dragged my friends to play osu!.
I tried getting my friends into osu, they say too hard the quit lol
non of my friends know what osu is, but after I cover the basics they are like "Cool, good luck with that." Which is fair tbh.
I had a few friends that got me into the game, but none of them play very often anymore, if they even play at all. Often I suggest it to friends who have some kind of interest in rhythm games but very few have actually kept playing after the 20-30 minute mark.
I can say 90 percent of them know what osu! is but never play it.

I've actually introduced quite a lot of friends to Osu! They were all internet friends though.
most of them don't know or understand, but i got 1 friend who has a account from 2015 but almost never plays. he started playing again because i told him i started playing.

no, I disagree... Quite a lot of people know osu many of which only play the game as an aim trainer for valorant, csgo, (overwatch and fortnite during the time when i got into osu), and other games. Now its becoming even more popular after penguinz or moistcritical, tyler1, greek, tenz, 39daph, and other famous streamers started playing it. It is an understatement to say its a game that few people know. I think you meant that a few people actually play osu as a main game and or seriously.
