What do you think is going to happen to the game in future? Have you heard that if game gets popular, most of the beatmaps will be removed due to authority right? On top of that, is osu going to be kept up to date and supported for a long time? What kind of profit do developers get? Osu Lazer seems to accumulate all the rhythm games all in one, so will it be osu's arise or its doom? Is community developing and do people really like a game where skill level required to play properly is that high?

Me as a fan would regret if game that I put time and effort in will die at some point and I can't really do much about that, so I wanted to ask you guys if there's any kind of information that could relieve a player like me who doesn't want game to reach its end soon

after reading this post i think i understood it more, how everything rolls i mean

the game will probably still get updates and it will still be active. there are programs being made, ranking criteria changes being discussed, osulazer isnt out yet. maybe youre looking at the wrong places, i did before too.

game getting popular, obvious first response to that is the FA project. as game gets popular, on the positive side more artists understand what osu is about and license their songs for free game use. there is a stance regarding commissions which you can read on the osu! > Development forum (pinned). finally, even if only FAs were allowed and the legit good artists disallow their songs on osu, (1) there are too many ranked (let alone unranked) maps for them to strike down and (2) it will probably be shared within the community through discord or something similar on private servers

devs have osu!supporter. its still being bought considering contests with osu!supporter rewards are a thing, and even eithout osu!supporter, i imagine people would still buy it for their pfps and about me's

osulazer? figure for yourself. imo it will be good but there are many personal reasons for that

yeah skill level is really high nowadays. top players come and go in real life though, so top rankings will probably continue to be active generally.

this is all from my view having mapped for most of my time on osu! so i dont feel as restricted about osu future. i dont go deep into discord servers though. for pure players though, i can somehow see how it looks like the game is dying. skill demand is high. no particular events. not much is said because the past youtube channels for osu arent as seen anymore. the "hype maps" aren't as common in low diffs anymore.

the game is not dying yet, but maybe you need to look somewhere else aside from just playing. of course, you can do otherwise and keep playing and improving but with a fun mindset. its just like every other community based game.

eh thats all i can say

Even if the beatmap downloads get pulled, mirror websites like Bloodcat will still preserve the downloads. Maps that are no longer available still have active leaderboards on the main osu! website and award PP. Osu! is also getting more featured artists than ever. I don't think it's anything to panic about.

The skill inflation on the other hand is definitely a talking point. You have to be playing literally constantly to not experience significant rank decay. I guess with the growing community, that's only a natural result. Some people will excel, others will struggle, but that's to be expected.

Games eventually expire in the popularity sense, sure, but there's always communities that keep games alive long after their time in the spotlight is over. Just look at Fortnite. Massive game in 2017/2018. Playerbase shrunk considerably, but each new season announcement gets millions of YouTube views within the hour. There's minimal wait times for matches, even though it places you based on your skill level. People clearly still care. Even much older game series like Age of Empires still have communities.

As someone who's been around for a pretty decent chunk of time and spoke with some of the administration over the years, they seem to be prepared for just about anything. Even after PewDiePie played the game, and the playerbase jumped a bit, their servers were prepared in advance for such an occasion. If server expenses get too high, they might downsize, or add more enticing offers to encourage supporter purchases, but the core gameplay is going to remain the same and F2P as always.

I'm not worried. I think we're going to be seeing a stable osu! for quite some time. Only real concern is the increased pressures of the competitive scene, but osu! is a naturally competitive game.

Just enjoy the game while it’s still there and don’t think about the future to come. Everything will die at some point. Just accept it and stop thinking about it.
