im compiling some research on maps which manipulate specific techniques to provide deeper meaning. maps that just have solid aesthetics are cool and all, but maps which are actually able to convey even the meanest emotions and concepts are always welcome to me. while storyboarding can do this exceptionally well, using actual hit objects has a unique allure that actively rewards playing through the map. this sounds like complete bull, but at its most basic it can just be specific colourhax and slider shapes for a particular instrument. in fact, most of the fun in choice gimmicks like these is that they all are incredibly easy to understand and appreciate, as it's almost impossible to have any highly complex symbolism through lines, colours, and audio alone. however, simplicity does not restrict creativity.

yeah whatever, here are some examples of what i mean. these are all very plain but they are unique. you probably have some better examples.

Monstrata's Piano Man
https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/1081449#osu/2262286

there's a big google doc which defines most of mr monstrata's intentions when mapping this, notable decisions include repetitive flows to illustrate the song's themes of depression and litany. also, it has the most iconic 5 seconds of any map ranked this year. those 5 seconds are incredibly lame, but that only makes them better.

Monstrata's Goodbye To A World
beatmapsets/561131#osu/1186518

pretty basic stuff, but the linear sliders used to differentiate the robotic vocals are pretty neat.

handsome's The Distance
beatmapsets/580375#osu/1228840

song is called the distance. map has high spacing. pretty cool.

verychill's Apex Of The Vortex
beatmapsets/1206001#osu/2511210

Insane places emphasis on circular flow, Vortex can be clearly seem as a spiral that draws closer and closer to the center as the song continues. Ties in with the song name. Pretty neat.

Heilia's Tokyo Starlight
beatmapsets/1011055#osu/2116308

This one is a stretch, but a circle only diff (starry starry night) emphasizes the stars of the night sky. Fine, I'm out of ideas.

Thanks for reading, nerd. Now feed me your knowledge. The hivemind beckons, and is calling out for examples of cool gimmicks so it can go full high school film critic on them.

tldr: post out of the box gimmicks which represent something cool

can't find anything allegorical, but I've got you covered for symbolic: users/13920#beatmaps

This is cool, maps which give feeling equal to that of the song.

From the examples you gave, they're rare. Actually, the ones you gave can be analyzed by non-players.

I dunno if you will count this, but there's this map which uses overly irregular spacing and emphasis, irregularly slow SV, majority slightly-curved sliders, and dark combo colors. I think this gives off both the dead but emotional feeling, which follows the song lore and general song feeling. There's also the only orange combo color at the end which signifies the sunset the girl sees when you check the MV for the song.

This kind of example I gave, the actually easy example, involves playing the actual map, and knowing context & lore to some extent. This, I think, is an easy way to convey emotion, but the audience is limited. Things like player movement, or contrast to "generic" maps, for example, will only work for players. I guess something like "reversing" through flow reversal would work visually. Conveying regret towards plagiarism through controlled copying, for example, will only work if the player has played famous maps beforehand AND if the player is aware of the context of plagiarism. There are more themes like not caring for others' opinions on quality, literally copying things, and simplicity, which doesn't get to the player if they don't know the song lore (especially if the song's lyrics are . If a similar style and similar pattern is used for songs with story connection, then the audience would be players who have similar musical tastes and has spent long enough time in osu!. There is emotion there, but for a limited audience only. Sotarks' fhana maps with the diff name "Melancholy" wouldn't pop out to people who don't know about it for the first time, but it's the easiest way to show mapper connection. Still, I think it gives off some emotion.

The examples you gave (though only 2 of which I have seen I can defend), are really unique in terms of this symbolism. The right song, right context, and the right mapper, for a really wide audience but still equally effective. I doubt the average mapper would go looking for a song about spikes or sharpness and use all sharp angles for the whole map. Again, it has to fall right.
ok i rambled enough on what i think

I really doubt this is what's going on there, to me it looks like handsome just wanted to make some arcs. I'm honestly relieved, basing gimmicks on song titles is pretty lame.

Representing the song with somewhat unusual but well-executed gameplay elements is cool:

Harsh slider aim on long vocals https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/437683#osu/942356

Lots of 1/4 patterns that force snap aim https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/514980#osu/1093703

High density reading and precision https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/995205#osu/2081848

Extreme cursor awareness and awkward aim https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/1267267#osu/2633704
