It'll help players to find maps that are well "liked".

Compared to sorting by playcounts, favorites could provide a more dynamic list of search results since users are limited only to 50 online favs and thus is likely to update them?

I think it'll help those maps that are well "liked" but lacking playcounts to be found more easily?

I feel that the search results you get from sorting by ratings, online favourites, playcounts are quite different.

For ratings, usually those maps with high ratings are difficult maps. Whereas it's not necessary the case for those with high amount of online favorites or playcounts.

Personally I feel that playcounts, ratings, online favourites are 3 unique factors that could be used differently to consider how well received a map is.

Online Favourites = "Popularity thingy", determined only at this particular point of time
Ratings = "Quality thingy", determined & accumulated over time
Playcounts = "something* thingy", determined & accumulated over time

too bad that you can't rate an "unranked map".

A: Because this will be the fastest way to touch new awesome unranked beatmaps.

Favorites usually indicate a popular map, not necessarily a good one. You might have better luck by browsing your or others favorite mappers, especially unranked mappers in your case.
