March 17. 2018 The Graduate 1967
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061722/

A disillusioned college graduate finds himself torn between his older lover and her daughter.

If I saw this film a couple of years ago there could have been some wisdom I could gleam from it however now I can only see Ben as a complete unlikable POS although that is somewhat the point. While love Simon and Garfunkel using already established music as part of a soundtrack feels lazy to me I always prefer to have music I don't have established feelings to. And the ending was just salt in the wound.

I don't mind as long as it is in spirit of the stuff I am looking at. We don't need this thread to become a dozen fanboys gushing about the new Marvel or Starwars movie. Try to keep it to interesting film.

March 18, 2018 The Circus 1928
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0018773/

A Tramp finds work and the girl of his dreams at a circus.

An old Charlie Chaplin film. He was truly a master of visual comedy as if you see one of his films you will notice some gag piece that has been iterated and copied countless times. Considering how much of this I have seen sampled elsewhere it is surprising I even enjoyed it as much as I did. It is always a question of how much influence should weigh when rating a master artists works but when it comes to Chaplin he rises to the expectation. Obviously limitations with silent film prevent it for becoming an utter masterpiece but this is a fun film to watch nonetheless.

March 19, 2018 Rosemary's Baby 1968
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063522/

A young couple moves in to an apartment only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.

Creepy and unsettling. The fact it is so uncertain as to whether Rosemary's concerns are legitimate creates a phenomenal atmosphere I was legitimately expecting the film to become one of more traditional horror rather than remaining purely psychological. It's somewhat similar to another beloved film of mine Eraserhead.

March 20, 2018 Cronos 1993
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104029/

A mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

Not much to really say about this movie. Failed to really build up on it's mythos leaving only a few scenes that capture the vampiric nature of the protagonists immortality. The lighting was pretty awful for the last 30 minutes or so making it difficult to tell what was happening.

March 21, 2018 The Fly 1986
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091064/

A brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong.

Being fantastic in being campy and cheesy but has really earned this film it's place within pop-culture. Even if you haven't seen the film you probably know the premise for elsewhere and there are no real surprises to be had. Some scenes may disgust certain people but I enjoyed the hilarity it evoked.

March 22, 2018 Freaks 1932
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0022913/

A circus' beautiful trapeze artist agrees to marry the leader of side-show performers, but his deformed friends discover she is only marrying him for his inheritance.

Film has come a long way. The tinny audio and blurry visuals gave me a bit of a headache. Would have prefered the film remained on the more slice of life stuff as the main plot point were uninteresting. Not a movie you need to go back and see.

March 23, 2018 Pleasantville 1998
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120789/

Two 1990s teenage siblings find themselves in a 1950s sitcom where their influence begins to profoundly change that complacent world.

While it takes broad strokes with the message it wishes to convey I love this movie. Heartwarming and beautiful (and creative) use of colour. Winds down a little towards the end as becomes less like The Truman Show. It's a very swell movie indeed.

March 24, 2018 7 Faces of Dr. Lao 1964
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057812/

A mysterious circus comes to a western town bearing wonders and characters that entertain the inhabitants and teach valuable lessons.

Born from whimsy and an interest in eastern mysticism it seems. While it has promising ideas the film was completely uninteresting. Other than dated effects there is no reason that I can see to ever come back to this movie.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/

A Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.

Everybody knows this movie and it's brilliance is no hype. Score is fantastic, tension is executed incredibly without being excessively drawn out.

March 26, 2018 Stand by Me 1986
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092005/

After the death of a friend, a writer recounts a boyhood journey to find the body of a missing boy.

Honestly was hoping a bit more for these white trash growing up into adults with no life prospects. However despite not being exactly what I desired it still holds up as a better Stephen King adaption. While kids are usually annoying in movies these guys weren't too bad almost reminding my of some of the jackasses from school.

March 27, 2018 The Princess Bride 1987
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/

While home sick in bed, a young boy's grandfather reads him a story called The Princess Bride.

A basic fairytale story. While it lacks substance it is still a fun time more gear to a family audience. Reminded me mostly of 'The never-ending story' which I'm sure is intentional. Not much to say, didn't love it, didn't hate it.

Just finished watching Cidade de Deus. I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to brazilian cinematography, but damn - this was good!

City of God is a flick that depicts the daily lives of favela residents. Plot is interesting enough to keep you going. Characters are compelling, and this is where the movie shines. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is big on Goodfellas (they're quite similar, as some actually dub it as the 'brazilian goodfellas')

March 28, 2018 Gran Torino 2008
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1205489/

Disgruntled Korean War veteran Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a Hmong teenager who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession: a 1972 Gran Torino.

Still as good as I remember from several years ago. Addressing the cycles of gang violence and poverty is an issue I think is important so naturally I enjoy films that tackle this theme. Performances are compelling and the greater focus on culture and relationships rather than violence and death is great.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048545/

A rebellious young man with a troubled past comes to a new town, finding friends and enemies.

A pretty decent classic film. While it has largely been surpassed by other things since I always have an appreciation for the classics more so than others (Look at my anime threads). Interesting commentary on ideas of manhood.

March 31, 2018 The Party 1968
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063415/

A clerical mistake results in a bumbling Indian film star being invited to an exclusive Hollywood party instead of being fired.

A basic fish-out-of water cringe comedy. Plenty of the visual gags are great but much of the dialogue hinges on the protagonists complete social ineptitude that I was torn from the film. While it heads in an intertesting direction the payoff is ultimately not worthwhile.

A very handsome man finds the love of his life, but he suffers an accident and needs to have his face rebuilt by surgery after it is severely disfigured.

A strong recommendation to be unspoiled if going into this film. I absolutely did not expect some of the twists and turns. Worthwhile and probably good to look into a rewatch. Not much to say without spoiling.

In a small American town, a diabolical circus and its demonic proprietor prey on the townsfolk.

This is like the 4th movie to have circus I've seen for this, it was not intentional. Essentially a better version of Dr. Lao although still not amazing and probably more suited to a younger audience.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090756/

The discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of psychopathic criminals who have kidnapped her child.

I'm a fan of David Lynch's work despite seeing only a few of his films. Naturally it has it's oddities and eccentricities but fails to get as weird as some of his other films. This ones depiction of abuse is worth noting in particular.

I did a similar thing with anime movies for a month last year while I was banned. Of course a year is much longer and I have a long way to go. And of course anybody who knows me is aware I love the old, the obscure and the influential. I just wish there was more engagement but I guess I have demonstrated why there shouldn't be a film and tv subforum.

April 6, 2018 The Third Man 1949

Pulp novelist Holly Martins travels to shadowy, postwar Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, Harry Lime.

Effective presentation for a film that is almost exclusively people talking. The second half is absolutely brilliant tying together threads and I absolutely love the brief chase scene through the cobbled streets of Vienna.

i watched I, Tonya (2017)

i really liked this movie as it really shows the story of Tonya Harding, unlike how people took the idea that she did and plan the whole knee thing by herself (as i've heard). i don't know why, but i nearly cried watching the makeup prep scene before the olympics. this movie shows how tragic her story is, not in a laughable way

Hilarious. Despite that the film feels excessively long clocking in at over 2 hours and while there is comedy to be had in every scene the quality is drastic at times.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

Oskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.

This movie was pretty neat. Sound mixing felt a little off with how loud some of the passive breathing and sound effects were but maybe that was to build upon the somewhat bestial nature of the characters. The bizarre deaths were a plus such as a woman mauled by vampiric cats.

After a bizarre encounter at a party, a jazz saxophonist is framed for the murder of his wife and sent to prison, where he inexplicably morphs into a young mechanic and begins leading a new life.

Couldn't get invested in this at all. Structured to make the narrative needlessly confusing, of course it is David Lynch but an inferior Blue Velvet in the end. The first act didn't seem to have anything to do with the rest except for the broad details.

A Quiet Place was the first horror movie I've watched in the cinema. I absolutely loved it, although there were a few things niggling at me, like why the hell did they get pregnant.

I really like the use of sound, or lack of.

After Carlos - a 12-year-old whose father has died in the Spanish Civil War - arrives at an ominous boys' orphanage, he discovers the school is haunted and has many dark secrets that he must uncover.

This movie was all over the place. In an attempt to do to much it came across as confused to what it wanted to be. With more development on motivations and relationship I could see this being really good but the attempts at horror within the first act cloud this.

As an actress starts to adopt the persona of her character in a film, her world starts to become nightmarish and surreal.

Very much a more haunted and thrilling version of Satoshi Kon's Millenium Actress. While Friday the Thirteenth is suited to much more of a horror film this one does have it's nightmarish moments, the scenes with the rabbits are pretty weird in that way. This movie is not for everyone and especially long at 3 hours but recommended if you like weird stuff.

Private Joe Bauers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes five centuries in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive.

It has been a long time since I saw this. The premise which everybody knows demonstrates how great an idea it is but the movie itself is really mediocre. Of course any criticism of how dumbed down the plot is can easily be met with "That's the point" but was the narrator really necessary? How this film comes up in discussions leaves much to be desired.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033870/

A private detective takes on a case that involves him with three eccentric criminals, a gorgeous liar, and their quest for a priceless statuette.

I'm not a big fan of mystery, too often they are poorly structured and built on conspiratorial reasoning or otherwise they are boring and predictable. It is only once this film becomes a discussion on trust and a narrative 'prisoner's dilemma' does it's value truly shine. However this is only in the last 30 minutes and too late.
