And how can I be one too?

I've been working on making a large recommendation chart however it was becoming apparent there are still many notable and influential series' I want to check out before making anything with permanent form. So instead I have devised a list of 100 anime that showcase the best that anime has to offer where regular recommendations tend to fail. While quality is very much important I also wanted to include a focus of unique and influential titles from the anime scene as well as a large distribution of genres, age and running lengths, catering to all kinds of fans as well.

I could honestly see it getting replaced in the next couple of years if we get another sakuga darling like it though. Violet Evergarden (maybe if the trailer is anything to go off).

I actually think the last third or so is not that tight and just me getting to lesser known but highly regarded shows could see them all replaced. Stuff like Crest of the Stars, Grendizer, Rahxephon etc. I was considering putting stuff like VOTOMs, Hokuto no Ken, Ace wo Nerae and BECK in since I love what I have seen of them so far but decided to keep it to series' I have finished as well.

I'd include last season's Houseki no Kuni in there too since it's one of the very, very few CG anime I've seen that are actually decent and the sakuga present in that show may remove the stigma people have towards CG anime. Don't quote on me that though since it is fairly new; I still haven't fully evaluated my thoughts on the show. For one, it's still unfinished but so are a couple of shows on your list and since you wanted to make a list full of unique anime that catered to many fans, I feel you should include at least one CG anime and Houseki no Kuni fits the bill.

I don't mind the list, infact it could be rather helpful in some ways. but please do something about the title :(

I've been talking with Railey about it and honestly I'm not as enthralled by it as some are. I'd rather call attention to the interesting mixed media presentation of Kuchuu Buranko instead which also missed out on the cut as well as much older shows.

Why? It isn't much different from what some call me anyway. Thread was just for something to link to as a response for recommendation requests as long as it isn't deleted I don't care what happens to it..

Kaiji is terrible compared to both them so it's a given.
mulraf
i liked akagi and one outs but for me kaiji was better than both of them. my reasoning is mainly that kaiji, compared to akagi and tokichi, is also likely to lose and not protected by any sort of plot armor. especially one outs is really close to what one punch man opts for "nobody wins, but i" is literally part of the title. i think already knowing that both of them are gonna win everytime takes away a lot of the atmosphere and makes it less realistic. also since the shows main game is always repeated it gets stale after a while while in kaiji the topic always changes WHILE still being explained in a better way than e.g. akagi. in akagi, as someone who doesn't play mahjong and never watched other mahjong animes or similar stuff, i didn't really understand all the rules after the short explanations at the beginning. in kaiji it was more clear to me and one could take part in thinking about solutions about the problem.
(don't get me wrong. both akagi and one outs are a 8/10 for me. it's just that to me kaiji is a 9/10 and i'm trying to explain why it's higher up for me.)

I wouldn't recommend any on the psychological battle aspect. Stakes are frequently way to high and honestly just makes Kaiji despair porn. You also essentially say Kaiji also ceases to be immersive on second watch at which point Kaiji would cease to even be a good anime for that.

Exactly why they are better. They are constantly forced to build on an established rule set and innovate by pushing them to their limits. Kaiji way too often just blind sights with stupid shit like the glass bridge, with an established rule set they can't do that while still introducing neat gimmicks like the glass tiles in Akagi.

oh you mean stuff like draining your blood until you die when you lose?

good point. but wouldn't it be more like "it's worse on second watch" since i also like akagi and one outs even though their outcome is predictable? also the realism aspect wouldn't suffer on a second watch.

i have to say you convinced me on this point. didn't see it in this perspective

well. all in all i just subjectively liked kaiji more and i know many people see it the same way. there are, in my opinion, reasons why one could like kaiji more, but i see your reasons as well and understand why you view it that way :x as i said i like both of them a lot so i would never think about discouraging someone from watching them, i just want to encourage people to give kaiji a try too, especially if they liked one of the other two. (and actually in my initial post i just thought you probably didn't watch kaiji since it's overall a pretty respected anime in the community and it's similar to akagi (and a bit to one outs))
