While I'm here, more feedback from me

First of all, found a way to convert HD to SD in a fast way: https://www.reddit.com/r/osugame/commen ... nt_use_hd/

So I used this with 16-9 aspect ratio, 90% opacity ring & dot circles as well as simplified spinner

- Speaking of that simplified spinner because it is darker, it took more time than normal for me to realize that I had to spin
- The Miss (I think it was mentioned before) should have an alternative with just the X fading out, cuz that glow is distracting

Pretty sure I mentioned this as well, if you are targeting this skin for pro players, there should a variety of customization available. While I know it is WIP, hitbursts wouble be a nice addition. Huge/Med/Small "100" In the middle/On top and not just dots

Also, had to put 26 in hitcircle offset cuz 2 dots in 2-digit numbers

EDIT1: In the reddit post, can you confirm this comment?
EDIT2: What is the font that you use for this skin?

Yes, I have already set up an automated Photoshop / Mac script that converts HD files to SD files. I have no problem converting to SD.
The reason why it's so long is that if i change a HD file, I'll need to change the SD file too, which can create problems and conflicts, and is also hard to handle. I'm working on all the HD files first, then after the skin completely works in HD, I'll convert it to SD.

Thanks for the info, I have been considering options for hitbursts. But since they are animated, they will take longer to make. Sorry for waits... As for the other points, I'll work on them. They'll be implemented if they work well.

'Futura, for everything and Hall Fetica for the ranking letters. I might change some fonts in the future.

I plan to upload a new developer update after turning some menu sounds and animating hit bursts. This will add new elements such as sounds and other innovations but won't be as debugged. Some minor elements might be bugged but should be playable.. alignment issues and other stuff from community suggestions probs won't be done too .

Implemented a test version of the new hit bursts - not animated.
They grab way to much attention, and take way too long to recognise and fully understand in the mind. When one appears, you think 'whats that?', go look at it, and miss the next note.

Fixed the 'too flashy' issue by reducing the miss to a single-lined cross, and decreased the opacity of 50 and 100 bursts in gameplay down to 50%. It's still too flashy though, or maybe conflicting with the hit circles since these are also a 'ring' with 'something inside'

It's not as flashy as before when they where 100% bright, but i still feel the old 'dots' responded better. Maybe some animations that would make the bursts easier to recognise would work.

Some ideas i have that might fix things:
Add a quick 'Zoom In' (up FROM the middle, or down from a large size then TO the middle) and then slightly rotate the shape slowly, until it fades out, keeping the dot in the middle stationary and fading out.
Using only the triangle and not the diamond for hit 100. This might be the cause of the recognition issues because remembering five different shapes (tri, tri with dot, diamond, diamond with dot, cross) are taking memory. A diamond is also very loosely related to a warning, thus the user needs to remember what it means in this context, which is not good. Everyday standards should be used for faster perception, as one already knows what they relate to.

Just updated them, they are now rounded to match rounded style gameplay and colour filled for easier recognition (no more outline style, like a legit shape with black dot in middle)

Since I'm so tired I can't test this properly now so I'll come back later

= Yes, thanks. Bigger dots and numbers also looked weird during prototyping.
= Hitbursts were trouble for me too. I found it hard to balance visibility, concentration and the time the mind takes to read it. Bigger dots were too vibrant, smaller dots were hard to see and left you trying to see them instead of playing, and, numbers conflict with the circle numbers subconsciously.

Hello! just a quick bump...

I need some extra help and opinions on the hit bursts... Any suggestions? They would be really helpful!

Bit hard for me to see this as being a pro skin, considering all the effects and distracting lights and such. Though, I'd say the skin's really great for more casual players! It looks really good so far! Cant wait to see the other colors come out, haha. Good work, dude.

(also, sorry if i'm using the forum wrong or something. Not used to this. )

Edit: Just wanted to add that I really like your skins and such!

hitbursts, huh? Good for colorblindness I guess cuz each type has a single shape. I don't like having 100 and 100k as 2 separate sprites. For me is distracting cuz when I have this I focus on where did I shot a 100k instead of gameplay. And I'd rather swap dots in normal's and katu's

While I'm here, for the spinner, try to integrate the- no wait, you already done that... and you don't want old-style spinner... I'm pretty sure making a glow is the only thing that you can do IMO

EDIT1 Just looked at mania, that scorebar is waaaaaaaaaaaay toooooooo high... like, it's outta there!

Well yeh... thanks for the opinion

but imo the different shapes are annoying. (see my paragraph of stuff under the new mockups images)

btw screenshot mania lifebar? it doesn't look too far off.. its just under the acc numbers for me. *and mania not skinned yet

Looking at the first post, I think the color #3 should be purple. Also what are the color codes you plan to use?
Perhaps add another variant of hitbursts - blur out only? that spinning 50 can be distracting
And just got inspired by the skinning competition, maybe somehow cover the osu!cookie with a Nightgate logo?

It is purple... Try viewing on a more higher quality display... as this certain purple is hard for some screens to reproduce properly... most mainstream phone displays are good.

Look closely - in the ranking title there are 2 lines, right? The bit that the ranking grade has only a single line and it's a tiny bit darker than it should be

I really admire the aesthetic vibe to it and god the sound effects are astonishing(♥A♥ ). User setup took a while but I mange wait till people start complaining about that.... Can't wait for the other colours to be available--take your time skinning them.

And how did I seemlessly get rid of that gap separating the ranking title from the ranking panel?

Answer: smart skinning, thinking outside of the image

(tldr the score-percent has a huge block of empty space to its right which pushes the numbers to the center.. As for the rest, figuring them out is more fun!) unfortunately osu hides this certain images that are oversized so that's why you can't see the percent image

Yes, did some fixups and mania mods.

Also experimented with some cookie colour changing algorithms, all green (green lol, i mean 'good') so far!

cool skin bro, it seems really nice and futuristic, i hope see it soon in various colours. :) :)

Suggestion: i see in Diff mods icons (HR,SD,etc) it shows how many percentage increases the Score Multiplier. But only shows how much increases individually. It might look better if you do it like this for example: Hard Rock instead of show 1.06x show +0.06x or Double Time instead of show 1.12x shows +0.12x

Very clean gameplay design! Even though I feel like the spacing in ranking letters seem quite off, that's just a minor problem.

This skin looks great so far. There are a few things that should get some love, but I can't be bothered to elaborate on them now (on a bus to college). If I remember, I'll try to go into more depth after I'm home. My body is ready for the purple version.

I love how you constantly bring some new aspects into skinning, like the different back buttons or how you skinned the area above the search bar on the song selection screen. Keep it up. Maybe I'll get to review NIGHTGATE too.

Yes, cool idea, but does it match the multiplier logic? e.g. HD, HR, FL, DT = 1.41, but if it's additive then it should equal 1.36

and also it might be confusing to others?? idk...

I fully accept the idea, but how will everyone else accept it? This is why I'm reluctant to add. Maybe i'll add in prefs, labeled 'additive display' or something

My re-colouring methods seem all good to go, so after all this is done, it should be easy to change colour using automation. Looking forward to it!

EDIT1: Just noticed in setup, big mode icons in 16-9 and 16-10/21-9 are different... it's black and color instead of transparent and color
I think old mods should get some love too
Default acc... that play-unranked looks out of place IMO

these don't matter, they still produce the same result as it is additive in osu.

old mods... hmm idk what to do about them...

These two are diffdrent

Really digging this skin- especially the cursor, mod icons, key overlay, spinner, animations, drop shadows... basically everything.

To be nitpicky, I would suggest:
1. Fixing menu-button-background.png. There's a really tiny imperfection in the border (See images below)
screenshots

2. Changing or shortening menuhit.mp3. It gets loud and repetitive when clicking through the menus, and overlaps with the music on maps where you press skip, while barely missing overlap on maps without skip buttons. It also sounds as if the same button is being clicked 2 or more times. Perhaps use menu-play-click.mp3 instead, which is quieter and less annoying.

Otherwise, the thought and detail put into this skin is incredible- it's as if I were playing a different game... I mean, I've never seen a skin with a setup dialog. :o

AAH! ITS A BUG!

Oh dear, just checked and i forgot to convert the folders to Standard Defenition.

Are you using standard defenition or high defenition?

because standard defenition probably won't setup properly with this bug.


I will work on squishing this bug, and i'm running out of time too...
hopefully tomorrow there will be a fix. =>

CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+S <-- make sure to reload the skin as well

EDIT1: Ummm... go look at 1st post on Compatability... that's an error

that big bug in the setup folder rendering the whole skin unusable for standard defenition has been removed.
also fixed up the lifebar background for SD users while i was at it.

The prefs folder isnt converted to SD yet though, will do once new elements come into there.


also,

Looking for suggestions on what to do for:
- mania hitbursts, because the one being used right now is very good with readability but its not original cuz its from VOEZ skin.
- Any more prefs ideas?

*Just realised, the 21:9 ratio should work well. the elements dont really need vertical alignment, only alignment on the horizontal side. Try this and tell me how it goes...

Will Nightgate be ready to be finalized? Considering that (in my opinion) it is an art skin, I'm gonna have to use my own hitsound set and use Audacity for loads of fade outs for these interface sounds.

To be honest, clear out your entire todo list and then we can go.

EDIT1: Maybe more cursors? That dotted trail is distracting me, I'd rather have a solid long trail or no trail at all.

It bothered me all the time, I think the main color of the skin shouldn't be a combo color as well

More Requests:

Cursors: no trail, no expanding glow <-- I just did that and wow, it removed a lot of "weight" for me... so phycological
and what about short trails?

Cursor smoke: smooth line, dark[?], small/med/big

Scorebar with a playfield box/lines* <-- this might be pretty hard for 21:9

More Slider Follow Circles... other than that glow, also color ring, white ring, none, small/med/big**, transparent?
Follow Points maybe?
Slider balls... filled to the borders, white ring, color ring

Geez, remove these shadows >_< I know this is a nice gimmick, but I can't read old-style stacks (Scatman)

Dark score numbers... weird one, I know

Just looked at Taiko, some elements aren't properly scaled
same with mania, but lightingN only

*The way you do that - make a 128x128 pure white square hitcircle, go to editor and put 4 of them to all corners on the same timestamp. Then let AT play and make a screenshot before AT hits them. Open that screenshot in the image editor and you can make a border outside of them but crop out 10px from top of the box you're going to make. Hope this helped lol

** Take a look at Rafis' and Piggey's skin, their follow circs are ending very close to the slider bodies, removing clutter from the playfield. Keep in mind, they are mostly speed players.

I've checked it, and it seems fine (apart for some MACOSX tagging files, which shouldnt affect anythyng.)

I'll take these options into consideration (most likley makeing them if i'm not feeling lazy for those harder ones)

Really good skin.
There's a few things you could improve :
- When releasing, remove the .DS_store files by editing the .osk with a Zip application. They are just useless.
- add 4:3 plz
- Mania lightings are really distracting. I would reduce the opacity to ~25%.

You can, as I said use something like 7zip or any equivalent for Mac AFTER making the osk and you should be able to see them and delete them.

Dropbox was overloaded with downloads so my account got banned for the day. I didnt even know they had a 20GB/day bandwidth... sigh... working with no budget..

It should be back up now, i just checked. But maybe by the time you read this it might be banned again so its just a waiting matter...



Those of you who did read the thread, and the error screen, thanks. You guys should do a little research on your own ;) its a help!



.DSstore files host OSX's extra file browser features (i think) and i cant see them even if zipped/unzipped. Apart from being annoying to see they shouldnt do much as they are less than one byte pretty much and don't muckup osu.
