Tutorial #2: Authentic Storyboarding (P1 : Collecting)

Outdated.. Use Tahaxan instead.
Want to create your own Authentic Storyboard??? (Such as YTI and Echo's Melody) Well you've come to the right place!!
In this Series of Tutorials.. you will learn how to make your own Authentic Storyboard and little tricks that can help you along the way!

Make sure you have read the Scripting Topic
http://osu.ppy.sh/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1869&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

!!You Should Save All Your Images in your Song's Directory!!
(So if i am doing Music Hour, I would save it in the folder the MP3 File is in)

Now. Before you start scripting, you probably should to the following.

1. Get your Song (Go to Ranked Beatmaps and there should be a download link showing the authentic Ouendan 1 and EBA
Songs. Not Sure About Ouendan 2)
2. Finish Mapping your Beatmap. (Get it Modded and make sure it is perfect before you storyboard. Storyboarding after it
is modded will make uploading take MUCH longer)
Things you'll need..
Emulator (IdeaS works Best. But be weary that the sound will sound really really bad!)
PhotoShop, Paint & ImageReady. (ImageReady and Photoshop are a MUST)
Rom (Ouendan 1, Ouendan 2 or EBA)
Sav File (Make sure it has replays or else you will need...)
Cheats (Not sure, I'm using Ouendan 2 with a Sav File so I wouldn't know.) The Infinite HP Cheat (Probably)
Whenever i tell you to save or something. Save it in the Song's Folder.

Sprite Collecting

1. Open the Rom in Emulator. Choose Replay or Song (If your using Ouendan 1. Which i am sure dosen't have replay)
2. Set Layers. Just Test them. Don't turn Layer 3 or the Windows. If they are off.. then later there will be no outline.
3. Now you have to Pause where you want to cut out. Once it is paused, Make sure nothing is in the way on the "Screen"
(Mouse Cursor). Press PrintScreen.
4. Go into Paint and Paste.
5. Move it so the "DS Screen's Top Left Corner" is touching the top left corner of the Page.
6. Resize the "Page" so that it is 640x480. Use Select to change the Size so that you can't see anything else EXCEPT for
the part outside the screen.
7. Save, and open Imageready. Use the MagicRubber Tool to get rid of alot of the colours. Magic Rubber works better
then the White Paint Bucket in Paint.
8. Now Open image in PhotoShop.
9. Now. Just click Save As. "Filename.png"
You Now have your First Sprite.

Just Repeat until ALL of the Sprites are Collected.

BG Collecting

BG Collecting isn't as bad as Sprite Collecting. So be grateful.

1. Open the Rom in Emulator. Choose Replay or Song (If your using Ouendan 1. Which i am sure dosen't have replay)
2. Turn every layer except for 3 and the Windows off.
3. Now you have to Pause where you want your BG. Once it is paused, Make sure nothing is in the way on the "Screen".
Press PrintSreen.
4. Go into Paint and Paste.
5. Move it so the "DS Screen's Top Left Corner" is touching the top left corner of the Page.
6. Resize the "Page" so that it is 640x480 -OR- 320x240. Use Select to change the Size so that you can't see anything else
EXCEPT for the Screen.
7. Just Save!
There. That was Easy.

Now there is quite alot of stuff in your Song's Directory Folder. So just make a few Folders.

"BG"
"SPR"
"TXT"
"SFX"

And Others. Just put the BG's in the BG Folder, the SPR in the SPR Folder, Etc. Etc.

Instead of
4,0,1,"Face.png",320,240
Blah Blah Blah

you would use
4,0,1,"SPR\Face.png",320,240
Blah Blah Blah

So on with BG and the lot..

Hope this helps...

Want me to Add Something? Change Something? And Error? Just PM.

DON'T TURN LAYER 3 OFF. THIS IS THE BACKGROUND. IF YOU GET RID OF THIS, THE BLACK OUTLINE WILL BE CUT OUT OF THE SPRITE AND IT WILL LOOK REALLY REALLY BAD!
The way I got around that was to take 2 screenshots; one with background and one without. Laying them on top of each other, I erased everything except the sprite. There must be a function in some image editing program somewhere which can do this for you, but I couldn't find one.

How the hell does that work? Isn't that just the same as getting rid of it manually??

Oh and editted a few Errors that was in my Post..

Actually, if you want to do some file-digging, there's a program called Taxahan that can extract files from NDS ROMs. I haven't tried Ouendan 1 or EBA, but Ouendan 2 is one of the few ROMS where all the images are in a format Tahaxan can read.

Unfortunately, it's a little complicated to get them out... as far as I can tell from just poking around, they're in the ROM's filesystem, under /data/2d/mv and then various subfolders (eg, s01 for the first story level, m01 for the first multiplayer level). Each one is an image file and a palette file, and sometimes a tilemap as well, so to extract the image you have to double-click on the image (or the tilemap first if there is one, otherwise the image will be garbled), then the palette, and it will show you the image. You can then save the image.

More unfortunately, Tahaxan sometimes crashes when I try to open images and I'm going quickly (not sure if it's specific images or something, or if I'm just running out of memory).

So, yeah, it's kind of involved, but if you can figure it out, and it doesn't crash, it should still be much faster (and possibly more accurate? It shows transparency as bright green, making it easy to fill/select all transparent pixels) than using screenshots and deleting the background by hand.

There's not many people that make authentic storyboards. In fact, you might be the only one m980 :o
LuigiHann
wouldn't bother deleting it, it's not hurting anybody

you could unsticky it though

A guide how to rip ouendan sprites with tahaxan would be super helpful ^_^ I saw a tahaxan guide already but it didn't work properly for my ouendan rom :<
Gabi
-Sin- makes authentic storyboards.
Torran
If it's Ouendan 2 or the European version of EBA, then Tahaxan won't work because of the game's file compression.

Yeah I'm unstickying this. It's not very useful.

I found Tahaxan but there are some files missing :(
where do I find them :?: (I use it to rip ouendan 2 sprites)

I also tried iDeaS, It cannot open my earlier save file (.sav) that has been created when I played OTO 2 with No$Gba; and iDeaS doesn't play sounds

Any help?
RandomJibberish
Taxahan doesn't work with Ouendan 2
Behon
Would anyone be willing to grab at least one select sprite from the games? I'll try and do it myself if there are now offers in the morning, but I'm having some serious problems with the emulators.

(If anyone's willing, it's the upper-screen shot in Glamorous Sky where the kids are walking around with the camera.)

Samples:

I used iDeaS 1.0.3.7 Beta Build 2, turned layers on and off, did some differentiation stuff with Photoshop, and saved with Paint.NET

Storyboard Modifier (Only activate while playing)

1 - Good
2 - Bad

You're awesome. I'll try and get some more myself after a good night's sleep. With some trial and error I should be able to unlock all stages.

IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME
DS emulators supported this. Hows about texture dumping?
Torran
Uh, just so you know, iDeaS could already do that
A LONG TIME AGO.
I don't think there's texture dumping though. I think DeSmuME is working on a 3D Viewer, sort of.
TraceTheKriken
hey soradg, I'd like to ask you if you could help me with sprite ripping.
these pictures... I can't rip backgrounds, sprites and texts form these parts of the game.

I already have ripped most of the other sprites and backgrounds, so I need help only in this one.
Oh, and also that "are you ready" text from insane and I also need these sprites from rest of the difficulties

Torran
I can't rip the first two sprites for you; black outlined sprites against a black background messes things up, sorry.

As for your third request, here's my Ouendan 2 Countdown Pack.

Thank you :D

But there is still one problem that I can't slove:

you sloved this problem, right?
Torran
It's a simple matter of layer order.

This is very useful for what you'll be doing:
[Official Specifications] Storyboarding by Scripting
I myself refer to it often.

You can also have a look at my map's storyboard.

I'm not good at scripting (exept for adding sound effects, It's easy enough)
Or is it just the order I add sprites that are in same layer? If it is, what order it sholud be?

And I have one of your maps that has scripted countdown. I just don't understand how you can make bg's change sprites so fast? (If I add moving bg it changes sprite after each beat, so It's slow...)
RandomJibberish
Learn to script, it makes things so much easier, and it isn't difficult to understand at all.

Not to mention that the end result tends to look more professional.
