As a slightly new player , I wish I had a way to find a friend who's online sorta like how facebook does it. Also a distinct "Friends list" , maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. Also would friend requests help instead of an instant add?

You can add friends by clicking them in the chat. Also typing /addfriend username works.
You can also add players by visiting their userpage and adding them by clicking the button under their name.
Edit: Also, pressing F9 opens the extended chat menu. You'll be able to sort the players to "Friends" on top of the window.
