Hey guys, want to say a game is shit based on 3 seconds of gameplay? I know I do.

How about around 10 years of shit games.

My English teachers always stressed the introduction sentence having to be a hook.

There's a difference between "3 seconds of gameplay" and "leaked video, screenshots, and impressions of the work-in-progress game".

Although I'm not part of the Sonic FadCycle (unlike the whole rest of you I liked some of the 3D games), and I've somewhat grown out of the Sonic series, I'm definitely looking forward to this release.

Never played any of the Genesis games, so hopefully this turns out just like NSMBWii, and turns me back into a Sonic fan again. :D

Still, *hopes for Sonic Advance remake*. That was a good game along with the other two in the series. ;)

Your game and watch only has a power level of 9000

Those games stand fine on their own, not to mention that they're way too recent to warrant a remake. I have stuff in my fucking fridge older than the Sonic Advance games, remaking them would just be a money-wasting venture on Sega's part.

I'll pass, since I play games to say if they're shit or not. Since I have yet to play Sonic 2006 and up, I still haven't decided to call them shit. :P
Well, except for that RPG on the DS. But that was only because of the ending.

Hmm, I guess. Probably the same reason why Nintendo didn't create a Super Mario World remake.

Still, NSMBWii has references to SMW and the other GBA titles, so StH4 should have references to SAdva1-3.

And I really hope they make the boss battles more interesting... Sonic Rush Adventure did it somewhat right.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a remake, by the way. =|

Those Mario GBA titles were previously released on other systems. They're major Mario titles ported to other systems. With that being said, the Sonic Advance games aren't significant enough to warrant references in a flagship Sonic title.

Propeller_Cap wrote:

If it's a flagship Sonic title, I'm going to be expecting the same style of boss fights that were done back in the day.

In style, not in content. The levels are all-new.

'tis a shame that I found the DS levels superior, but that's a completely different thing.

Back on topic, Sonic 4 probably will disappoint everyone who gets their hopes up way too high. A little hope every now and then is fine, but overhyping it will in the end bring nothing but disappointment. Think it'll be shit and you'll be pleasantly surprised if it's not.

As far the Sonic Rush boss style is concerned, I was not a fan of it. It sorta broke the flow for me and felt strange. So, the older style may be more predictable, but it feels a lot more comfortable.

They slowed down sonics jumping animation because when they converted their 3d models to sprites they couldnt think of a good(easy) looking way to do the fast spinning blur do it so they just slowed down the jumping animation

I really have hopes for the amount of effort sonic team is clearly putting in this.

Due to the Sammy takeover, Sega has very few departments that are considered independent anymore - there doesn't seem to be a consistent "Sonic Team" entity anymore. It's just a label commonly applied to Sonic-related games.

For the record, the development team/location of several key games in the franchise:
  1. Sonic 1 - The original Sonic Team, Japanese in Japan.
  2. Sonic 2 - Sega Technical Institute, American and Japanese in California.
  3. Sonic CD - Japanese in Japan, minus those that moved to California. This team was headed by Sonic's character designer, while the Sonic 2 team had the original programmer, who, for all intents and purposes, is widely considered to be higher on the chain.
  4. Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles - Japanese in California (the Americans worked on Sonic Spinball).
  5. Sonic 3D Blast - European team Traveler's Tales, who also made Sonic R and the LEGO Star Wars games.
  6. Sonic Adventure - Japanese Sonic Team in Japan, albeit after a trip to South America for inspiration.
  7. Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog - Sonic Team USA, a spin-off branch located in California (the headquarters is on Mission Street, if you were wondering where that SA2 stage title comes from).
  8. Sonic Pocket Adventure, Sonic Advance series, Sonic Rush series, Sonic 4 - Dimps, a separate development team. Usually work under the Sonic Team label anyway.
  9. Sonic Rivals - Backbone Entertainment, a Canadian company.
  10. Sonic Chronicles - A couple of teenagers working in their parent's basement on a fangame, under the guise of BioWare.
  11. Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 - I'm pretty sure this was Japanese-developed, but it's a bit nebulous due to Sammy merging Sonic Team's Japan division back into the company itself.
  12. Sonic Unleashed - Billed as being done by an all-new team, which places us in "Inmates running the asylum" territory, but still Japanese, I think...

I can see this being "It wasn't bad, but they should have followed Capcom's example"

Mega Man 9 brought absolutely nothing new to the Mega Man franchise and it was great fun.

There are now Nintendo Power scans, including an interview with current head honcho and former S3&K level designer Iizuka on the third and fourth pages:

Page 1
Page 2
Page 3
Page 4

The interesting points include there being four Zones (which we surmised already from the leaks), there not being any additional moves beyond the homing attack, the stages being designed with the homing attack in mind (which could be good or bad...), and the first boss changes his pattern from the third hit onward, not just mimicking the first boss of the franchise. Also, Iizuka and Senoue (music since Sonic 3, though he really only took charge in Sonic Adventure due to a certain celebrity) are the only members of one of the original teams involved with the project directly.

The soundtrack has been leaked. "Boss #1" sounds very similar to an unused track from a Sonic 3D Blast beta (as obscure as that may sound) and some have said "Mad Gear Zone Act 2" sounds like Cannon's Core and/or Lava Shelter. Jun Senoue worked on all of these tracks, and he's also doing the music for Sonic 4.

I'm listening to it right now, so I don't really have too many strong impressions. I assume my opinion will change when I actually play the game.

Edit: MP3 comparing Boss #1 vs. 3D Blast unused boss (Left and right pan, respectively)

I think it'd sound a lot better with real drums instead of Genesis samples. Mad Gear Zone is great, but the boss themes are too calm.
awp
Wait they're actually using a Genesis sound board for it? That's awesome.

The Genesis had such distinct sound effects.

Footage of Splash Hill Act 1 leaked, looks playable:

What's wrong with the gravity? The jumping doesn't look too bad, but those rings...

Also, too many springs.

Still waiting for someone to leak the actual game.

Also, this looks pretty near finished to me. Why exactly do they need 6 more months before releasing it?
Topic Starter
K2J
One guess is that they want to pace the releases of the episodes more evenly and they need time to build up to Episode 2. It doesn't take too long for a game to go through the XBLA/PSN/WiiWare approval process, I don't think.

My expectations for this game have improved. Best part of Sonic 2 was definitely Super Sonic.

The game has been delayed to Q4 in an apparent attempt to improve the quality and respond to the negative feedback that the leak got. Also, the MYSTERIOUS SECRET PLATFORM is the iPhone, as was revealed earlier by decompiling the Flash page. The iPhone version will feature 2 exclusive levels, hopefully including the minecart stage.
