well of course but if you take a look at the default skin you will find that it has no spacing issues at all so there has to be some way to fix this i guess

EDIT: additionally if i delete my custom elements and let osu load the default images i get this:

I guess i just could copy/paste skin elements to a skin where the thumbnail is working but i would like to know why it doesnt work, if someone here can explain it

I have the same question. The default osu! skin has the image centered and takes up all space. But on my custom skin and many other distributed skins, the image does not take up all the space and is not centered.

You'll have to reposition Combo and Accuracy on ranking-panel.png and create a play-replay.png for the button.
