Well, input wont hurt I guess.

Why would one want to ban borderline-NSFW stuff without going case-by-case? Adding a rule to ban anything with x would be stupid. Everyone can go outside to their local beach or sea or whatever and look at real bewbs and butts. No one cares and no one will ban you for having a bikini at the beach.
If your animu, game or whatever features girls that have special conditions, then they shall have it. It represents the whatever, so let it show whatever

Although, anything like "here, have my vagina in your face" or "look at me, Ive got literally less than a piece toilet paper on my body" should be changed.

That weird list
Bikinis and male swimsuit
Skimpy bikinis (ones that barely/only covers private parts) and skimpy male underwear
See through underwear beneath
See through no underwear beneath (private parts visible?)
Pantsu
Boxers
Lingerie
Hand bra
Cleavage
Cameltoe and male equivalent
Things that seem to be nipples, but the character is still clothed
Side boob
Under boob
Too much boob
Too much ass

Ahegao I dont fucking know
Girls/guys blushing and panting
Nipples and genitalia

*Note: all of these are green, unless you get things shoved into your face like http://puu.sh/eawEJ/bc523a428a.jpg

Just go Case-by-Case and disallow "ass to your face" esq stuff.
D33d
We don't need a list. We need common sense.

Go up to your relatives and teachers (and employers if you're old enough) and show them a questionable TV size background. Report back with their responses. Remember that even if the player's old enough to watch pornography, they might not want someone to walk in on them sat in front of underaged girls in bikinis and Japanese "fuck me" poses.
cheezstik
Would this be unrankable cos of the background? (Ignoring the fact that it has an AR9 and 10 version and obviously wasn't going for ranked, but just an example)
D33d
You're looking at a borderline case there, but because it's an amusing and artsy/cute pic, it might be possible to get away with it. Then again, it's pretty much scantily-clad molestation. those legs though mmmmmm

To be honest, nothing's gonna ever change from what I have seen so far.

Let's talk about this map https://osu.ppy.sh/s/15430
If you open the video (recommended in video player, not osu!, because that will mess up a timing a bit) on 1:42, you can clearly see the girl is holding a penis in her hand and holds it near the mouth (also to mention, she's most probably a loli, what's considered as a child porn in some states, so basically, who downloaded this could have downloaded stuff he can be arrested for without a warning, yay!). That map was never unranked. Because it is "too old" or because it cannot be told what she holds (obviously it's not when you zoom it to your monitor's resolution while the resolution is many times smaller)? If we consider age of the map, we should not remove other NSFW things so it can be fair to all people, both to this map and people who would get their maps removed (for example my map because of having pu**y in song tile) I do not think any justice was used here. If you make a murder, you are not forgiven after few years, you still did a murder. So we shall probably start removing maps and judge what's NSFW after we apply justice to maps which are really NSFW, not questionable. Obviously, not even the fact the QAT system didn't exist back in that time, it shouldn't be an apologize for this map being still available.

About the rules, common sense could be applied I think. Anything what does not emphasize the genitals or breasts is just safe. Showing panties is okay unless a cameltoe is visible, showing breasts partially is okay unless nipples or their shape is visible. What is NSFW about panties, bras, swimsuit and other underwear? You haven't ever seen someone in swimsuit on beach or so? I guess most of us did and I don't think there was anyone who told them to take clothes, obviously. Unless it is sexually suggestive (or eventually showing brutal stuff like interrupted parts of body), it is not NSFW.
mfw when I watch the video up close and see a penis.
she also gets her shirt lifted but you can't see her nipples.

the fuck?
edisk
If storyboards and backgrounds are optional to download like videos I think the problem should be somewhat solved... since if people really wanted a NSFW image they could always grab some from another site. Stating that there are NSFW images in the beatmap should be enough in my opinion, since it's the player's choice whether as to download the images or not.

Well.. she does have big boobs, but still, that's not sexually suggestive, or if it is, it is same sexually suggestive as flat chest.

NSFW shouldn't be depending on boobs, this is kind of unfair to people who has small boobs. It could be NSFW even the person has small boobs

I do agree with D33d though, but still it becomes really subjective into what a person may think will be questionable/nsfw or not. More clarification will be needed, but...I don't really agree with a list. Not sure how to really clarify such :/

Kurokami
I'm watching this from the very beginning and I do love small boobs. o.o Anyway, I kinda agree with wafu here and this should be handled case by case. If a BAT or modder is unsure about just ask a Staff or preferably QAT member. Although if he/she is unsure its better change it since someone else can since we all know how parents can think.
loldcraft
(likely controversial, but gets the job done)
Just create an "all ages" client that doesn't load any BGs, and call the normal client 18+
Add an "enable loading of BGs" option and have the user confirm they are above 18 and willing to see explicit imagery.
Direct anyone who complains to use that client, because they don't have the right to complain if they're using the 18+ client.
Few lines of code (or a .bat files that deletes all the BGs), and everyone's happy

but anyway...

Back on topic,
I don't care how other peoples parents think... If they buy their kids the newest call of duty or resident evil every time it gets released then they have no right to complain because most of those games are rated M for mature (17 and up). And yet they let their 11 and 12 year old kids play them. smh
Also, no one is obligated to play osu! with the BGs... If you don't like it, find a new one, rename it to the one in the folder, and delete the old one.

tldr;
Imo it should be based on what the community thinks, not somebody's parent.

I saw your BG kenon and I saved it to my computer... I am ashamed... ;_;

Just going to comment on the above post.

There is advisory on the content that is provided. The issue with allowing things in osu! is that there really is no way to promote public advisory. This is why things like radio are censored and basic TV channels are censored (But things like HBO are not). It's also why box art cannot be entirely explicit or promote explicit parts of the game (With a big of ambiguity).

The issue here is that while it is true that people can remove BGs and do things, it's still being seen by the general public with no advisory warnings. Parents buy videogames for minors with the visual knowledge of the explicit content, and that is fine, because they have made the choice to say "I have been made are of the content, but I will buy this anyway." With osu! backgrounds, you don't get that.

We have this system set in place for explicit songs. osu! allows them, but under the pretense that there is a label "18+", in the map description, so that the general public that plays the game can be aware of the explicit content.

-------------------------

I'd really like for some QAT/Staff Manager input in this. There seems to be a lot of discussion, which is cool, but it's not really going super anywhere and without people in power to make these decisions, its kinda pointless.
drflash55
So...

Is there a limit for how much 'skin' can be showing on a person's body to make it applicable for uploading?
I mean, you can just tell people that the song/image contains explicit content (i.e, the title, beatmap description, etc.) so that they can know not to download it.

But, of course, osu! is played by minors and not just adults... so how would this whole thing work out then? :?:
Kurokami
For video, writing "18+" or something into the description is fine but when it comes to the background its not since its already clearly visible on the site though its a bit small. So only a warning before the beatmap page can solve this which can be marked during upload process.
Sakura
All of these beatmap descriptions warnings sound cool and all, except you can't see them when you use osu!direct. And you don't even see the beatmap thumbnail if you have auto-downloads when spectating or in multiplayer either, which also dont help if the offending background is on a difficulty that uses a different background from the one in the thumbnail.
Kurokami
I think these warnings can be applied to the osu!direct downloads as well. o.o
loldcraft
in response to all concerns of people "unwillingly downloading"

have seeing 18+ backgrounds on osudirect or the osu website be linked to an account option of "I am willing to see explicit content" (disabled by default)
Maeglwn
I really think this is.. really dumb

are you guys seriously talking about the idea of an account option allowing for "explicit content"? I'm not really sure that the point is getting across - there's a rule in place against this sort of thing already and you guys are trying to get around it with this idea :P

lust said exactly what I was thinking; if you had to ask whether or not it was nsfw, chances are you should just change it anyways

keep in mind it's a pg13 game, if somebody's breasts are taking up half of the damn screen whether or not they're wearing something to cover it up that's not really okay

besides everybody dims their backgrounds anyways, just use something plain. just use something that's not an anime girl for once, that'd be cool. you don't need something that's even SUGGESTIVE in your maps if you want somebody to play the map and not stare at the background the entire time

almost everyone plays with 100% bg dim, then who cares if you see the boobs for 5 sec when you start the map?

This is not an apologize for anything. You could submit a song that explicitly offends a certain country or race - Which would be obviously deleted, because I do not think we are allowed to propagate racism here, but you could say: "You can mute the game or only music in-game." That's totally insensible. If something is avoidable by some way, that should not be the thing which can make the exceptions. This game is PG-13, so the content provided by it is supposed to be PG-13. No matter the warnings, it does not have to do anything there unless the game's required age is increased. What is so important about putting suggestive backgrounds to the map. Take something mild or neutral and you do not have a problem. If your background does have to show breasts, underwear and so on, so be it, 13 years old people see people in underwear quite regularly (beaches, pools, films that are PG-13 or less), but that obviously happens only in a limited range - For example, there won't be a girl that will put her breasts or ass exactly in front of your face on pool, because it's quite harsh and sexually suggestive - You cannot tell the reason of her acting like that, thus she is probably making a sexual suggestion, it quite easy to judge, if there is a normal picture with someone with underwear who does not do anything related to sex, it is okay (standing in certain angles to emphasize some parts of body might already start to be sexually suggestive, that's like the minimal point I think).
Stefan
What surprise me is that at the most time the issue affects on bigger sizes of breasts. Just saying.

On a serious note: As the mapper when my map becomes disqualified because of a suggestive background then I'd like to know who all agree with this opinion. Because opinions are way too different about this.
Bara-
I don'r mind having NSFW images, as they are also seen on Tv/ads/torrent sites, and sometimes that is even worse then here
The only problem IMO is the parents seeing it, asking the kids what they are looking at
I delete suggestive BG's on the Pc, bcz my parents use it as well
I don't deletr them on my laptop, as my parents don't use that
I have BG dim at 100%, but it's mostly for song select

But back to topic, I'd say, make it case by case
You can't have guidelines
BAT should say what they think of BG, and if it's too suggestive, they shouldn't icon/bubble/qualify it
They can always ask QAT
Or make 1/2 BAT say it, and only them
These 1/2 decide whether it can stay or not
Ayachi-
Mappers shouldn't even put something that could be possibly seems at NSFW
Just put something that is 100% safe or change the BGs
Having NSFW BGs with a warning is stupid
Why putting something that could be NSFW when the whole thing is on the charts instead of the god damn BG
Put something safe so I don't even need to worry about iconing something
The map won't be looked down when you have a safe BG isntead of a sexy BG

It is very obvious when an image is capitalizing on sexual/risque things to get your attention.

There is nothing more to add. This is exactly what I meant with "if you already have to ask people if the picture might be nsfw, then you should already not use it". People should stop trying wandering on the borders of allowance. Just put something neutral, don't put underaged super tits, don't put sexualized things, hence why do you need to put swimsuit bgs if the song doesn't resolve around either swimsuits, summer, swimming, beach, etc.?

Most people do it because sex sells and they think that they have to put their fapping material everywhere (like many do with their skins).

Get some sexual satisfaction elsewhere. I never understood why this is a question after all. Everything you would not your little daughter/son/sister/brother/cousin of an age of 13 to get in contact with or if you would wish to hide it in front of them and/or couldn't show the picture to your conservative grandparents or parents, is basically not good to go.

Yes, that includes super tits that disobey the rules of physics and anatomy. Because that's already sexualized.

Or maybe the brain matter to treat osu! seriously as a game that's accessible to anyone and everyone and is marketed as such. Since all of its content comes from independent users, they need to be made aware of what would fly in a real-world application, instead of the typical teenager fantasy titty utopia. One wouldn't be able to make a PG-13 game that has little girls smearing their tits and arse in the player's face, so as a community, we should be able to apply the same consideration to the game that we all want to thrive and progress.

Also, seriously guys--stop using dumb and borderline-NSFW backgrounds in a bid for attention. It's asinine and downright tasteless. Have some class and grow the fuck up.

I don't remember that something sexually suggestive was that bad to me at 11 - 13 years old, do not underestimate kids, and don't misunderstand me either, sexual shit is suitable for pre-teens? of course it is, it is suitable for a videogame that is not related to sexual shit? I don't think so, you're missing the point, this is not related to an age but for what this community is for, this is a rhythm game, nobody comes here to watch suggestive stuff, there are other places that you may like tho, but not this one. I know there are some songs that may fit with a "suggestive" image, but try to not put something that may distract you of why are you really here, playing.

Yes I was bored.

well maybe you're not affected with it, maybe only one in a million that was really affected by something like heavily suggestive image. but, extremely retarded people exist in this world. for example a 12 y.o kid that rape his friend because of the porn vid (real case in my country)
basically, maybe it's nothing for you but for the others, it may rang their tower.

back to topic, i think something like anime-girls-in-bikini.jpg or some anime girls's cleavage can still be considered as PG-13. why? because even those who is under 13 y.o are allowed to go to the beach right? you have real girls with bikini and cleavage there.
then again, i don't think someone would really play the beatmap because of the suggestive videos/pics. at least that's not how it works for me.
Maeglwn
it's not a question of whether or not the society's youth is brainwashed with oversexualized media, that's already been a thing since this generation started

it's based off of the classic version of pg13 in which we don't show underage children suggestive content

I've been reading this thread for a while, and the solution really does seem very simple.

NSFW is defined as "containing material such as nudity, pornography or profanity, which the viewer may not want to be seen accessing in a public or formal setting such as in a workplace". I personally don't think if an image is NSFW is the right question to ask.

Putting it bluntly, majority of the community are male. I'm not generalising, but it's true and you know it. If I'm going to say that, I may as well make another observation; majority of the community have some interest in "anime". Can you see what I'm getting at? Yeah. It should also be taken into account that you need internet to even play osu!, which brings me to my second point.

Anyone with half a brain knows how to use google. Essentially, "internet! NSFW content is just a click away"."

I understand the main question here is what is NSFW/SFW. But what should really be asked is:

Does the background image/storyboard/video add to the experience of playing the map? Is it even relevant to the song? Is it tasteful? If you go through this thought process when picking a bg, there should be no issues.
(also, is osu! really pg13? I haven't seen that anywhere in the game)

tl;dr osu! is a rhythm game, this shouldn't even be getting as much attention as it currently

It's not a question of whether or not it is immoral to put such pictures/animations in a game that is essentially designed for clicking circles, not looking at pictures/animations. That is entirely beyond the point, and is (in all regards) subjective. I am, therefore, not going to give you my personal opinion about it, more so because it'd be entirely rude and insulting to most people here, than anything else.

Basically, the point is that the game IS rated PG13 and as such should influence certain elements in it, such as, but not limited to, song backgrounds. That's IT. By posting a question about whether or not it's OK to post NSFW content in the game, you're literally doubting the game's own set of rules, and also trying to press your own (personal) judgement on it. Do people really need it spelled out for them that if the existence of point A rules out the existence of point B, then acting like their brain is that of a half-rotted cat and speculating that those two can coexist is NOT intelligent at all.

Another thing to note is that just because people can access Internet and can look at porn, doesn't mean the game should bow down and allow every form of content in it. Might as well make every movie and every game in the world rated R, in that case.

Also, if you really, and I mean REALLY, want to look at bobbing titties and all sorts of nudity (and you already pointed out that the majority of the kids today know very well how to use the browsers to their fullest), why don't you just go on Google/Bing and search for whatever type of fetish you might have, and get over and done with it? If they can use browsers for such things, they can also pull their pants down and jiggle their scrotum until they no longer feel the desire to inseminate something with their eyes, and instead play the damn game for what it's been made.

Eh... Is a discussion about NSFW imagery really necessary when we have NSFW song lyrics, like those:
SPOILER
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/47007
https://osu.ppy.sh/s/175036

I think that if we're setting a clear guideline/toggle on content for certain ages, it should work like that for everyone. Either way, I can see why we'd have a problem with NSFW backgrounds some years ago (does someone remember the old BG this had? https://osu.ppy.sh/s/11947) when you'd need some file tinkering to remove BGs, but nowadays we have the Fun Spoiler/Visual Settings implemented, you could just set your preference of R-12/R-17 imagery in the settings (obviously default to R-12), and any map tagged with an R-17 background would receive 100% background dim/video disabled (depending on what's the R-17 element). R-18 should be kept exclusive to personal skins (because this can't be avoided).
Ayachi-
Why would you want a NSFW BG with those settings, people can obviously fake their age
There is NSFW lyrics because this is a rhythm/music game
Not a picture/BG game
