In kiai mode, depending on your combo, you have the background replaced by a kiai background from the skin you have. It does this in every game mode. When kiai stops, the normal background appears.

Oh look, another guy who doesn't know yet the fact : 80% of players are NOT playing with storyboards enabled.
On another note, i like kiai time colored and without kiai time, black and white backgrounds.
