I had an Japanese exchange student staying over at my house for 3 nights during 2011
It was fun and nice taking him around
He was very polite and a lot of simple things seem to amaze him in our country @.@ (I guess this applies to any person travelling to a foreign country)
I still remember him panicking over a house fly that might be just a little bigger than average over here

I was realised by how he was so good at bargaining for prices even though he doesn't speak English/Malay/Chinese ^^"

I also have a few notable Japanese friends on osu! who can speak very good English

On another note: Some Japanese people actually do have a bias against foreigners
actually i take that back because I sometimes catch myself judging based on someone's race/nationality
Like how I find it difficult and fustrating to deal with Indian customers
But certainly I am not implying that all Indian people.
It applies to a lot of human beings @.@

Back to the topic, My impression about Japanese here in game that I know are...frankly, feel pretty much just like any Japanese anime-obsessed players from anywhere else. (but definitely have more intelligence, more rational than your average Taiwanese in some way for sure) Don't know about them in real life though.

Kawaii, and pretty shy and fragile. My friend Yui (she's an exchange student) usually doesn't talk much, but it's cause she's pretty quiet and doesn't really know English much. I also find the Japanese to be extremely polite.

Judging the entire population because according to that study, older people prefer not being online is a pretty harsh generalization isn't it?

On topic: Of the people I personally have talked to I doubt there's much of a difference in human behavior compared to the average otaku in any other modern country. I don't see how that would come as a surprise either, They are the same as you but with a different history.

I find Japanese people to be polite and respectful, and also hard working. Sometimes in 'Straya I find people, esp. teens can be very obnoxious, with drinking playing load music late at night, and I think 'this wouldn't be happening in Japan'.

I also like how they have and preserve their unique culture. Though on the other hand, they do seem somewhat xenophobic, insular and ignorant of foreigners and other cultures. For example the 'no gaijin' signs on some shops there, and some landlords not allowing and foreigners to rent their units. While this can be understandable to some degree, because there are some ignorant gaijin a**holes in Japan taking advantage of Japanese kindness while wilfully not bothering to follow their customs, generalising and stereotyping is never the right thing to do.

I was just looking through this thread and I wanted to ask you guys if you actually had enough experience with Japanese people to actually formulate an opinion on them. My bet is that most of you did not, because what I've seen so far are stereotypes, really. And anime doesn't count, of course.

One of my roommates went to japan. He said, in general, they're conservative and don't talk to strangers. Also there's a lot of xenophobia but that's mostly the older generation. Also apparently restaurant service is fantastic even though they don't accept tips.

Oh, and if you don't speak Japanese, you're going to have a bad time unless you're in a tourist-heavy area. And even if you do speak Japanese many people will shy away from you cuz you're a foreigner.
