The title says it all. Generate a beatmap of specified difficulty out of the music itself, as a starting point. Spinners would be allowed/disallowed there. Also, make the map oriented towards one of the four modes - meant for Taiko, for osu!, for Mania, or CtB. Maybe make this part of Edit mode, maybe a separate "mapsynth" tool.

I might not get what you mean, but here's my point

IF you're meaning that putting a mp3 into osu! , then using a tool would generates the notes inside the song for you to play:

Answer: No, that's a mapper's job and it's quite impossible to do it artificially. Moreover you can try mapping a song by yourself without uploading or sharing it too

IF you're having trouble searching for a beatmap with specified difficulty

Answer: Play every maps you downloaded and you'll get to know the difficulty

Auto-mapping is sort of a weird ground. It's possible (See. https://osu.ppy.sh/s/90854) (See. t/173380 ), but tl;dr, it would end up sucking.

Elitism aside, I could see this having a lot of issues. It sounds nice, sure, having a basis for your map when you insert and mp3, but there can be a lot of issues, such as the inability to establish breaks, slider times, differentation between sliders and notes, emphasis on certain parts of the music, hitsounding, and a lot of stuff that would make the program only mildly helpful.

Plus there's the issue that user submitted creations would become "Who put that mp3 in the editor and uploaded it"

I'd have to say a no on this one. Especially since, from my experience, peppy is sort of against automation of things like mapping (ie. A request about an auto-hitsounder got denied, as well as many other automation things ;w;)

Auto mapping would almost kill the game if it caught on. I really like mappers having unique styles - it gives the game flavor imo. I'm assuming you want this for songs that you like, but nobody will map? You can visit the Osu! academy, and start practicing there :) Honestly, I can never see this being implemented into the game. Sorry :/

Definitely against this for the same reasons mentionned above.
