Started casually playing somewhere in September. Just now, 5 months and 700 plays later, I passed an easier Insane difficulty for the first time. :D

I took so freaking long that I don't even remember.... started in Dec 2012

Started at the eve of 2013, playing a few hours a week and getting 350m ranked score, i can FC easy and normal insanes with respectable accuracy.

I passed http://osu.ppy.sh/s/43812 after a week of playing. It felt even better than getting promoted from bronze league in sc2 :!:
Bonobo
About 4 days for beginner insane songs like 110 bpm, then it was just a climb :p
Jordan
what the fuck it took me 7 months only to pass easier insanes. you silly people
buny
maybe they mean the easy insanes that are 4 stars difficulty rating

it took like 15k playcount to read ar7 for me
she_old
like 4 days, I basically started with tablet.
I had like 2.5 years of stepmania experience though.

By easy insanes, I mean maps like rog unlimitation and normal insanes such as Wahrheit.

4 months to get A from gold dust hr and stuff hue

Hoping 9 days isn't a bump.

It took me 8 days to beat the first song that I ever made it a goal to beat. It wasn't named "insane", but had an obscure name.

It took me 14 days to beat something actually named "insane" and when I did that, I beat two others on the same day.

I beat that DJ Genericname remix of "Dear You" in about 29 days. I think this was a few days after I turned off mouse accel.

I beat Gold Dust with an A after EXACTLY 2 months.

And if that's still not "insane" enough, the last landmark for me was Totsugeki! Glass no Kneesocks Hime! on Bunny Style. It took 4 months and 20ish days to pass it in general.

The day I bought a tablet I could pass/FC the easier insanes. Too get into the harder songs that took me a month or so of getting used to my tablet and finding the perfect area.

After about 2 weeks I could clear easier insanes. It took about a month for me to scrape through the harder ones, and now I can pretty much clear any insane (other than the ridiculous) with respectable accuracy.

I think I needed about 5-8k plays until i got my first insane map finished without failing...Can't exactly remember, I have to admit.
But still I finished this one insane map, but failed on a few hard maps.

The map difficulty is just so different from map to map o-o"

Thou' I always am happy, when I finally manage to finish a map, that I wasn't able to finish 1 or 2 months ago :3

Around 2.5k plays if you have a good sense of gaming in osu. Time? About 1 and a half months. Just keep on practicing. ~
Platinumsj
About 2.5 months for me to beat one easy insane beatmap on standard.
The first day that I actually made a real attempt at CtB was the day that I could play insane maps.

Pass insane when I switched to tablet.... that is, 6 months...
sanju5
i did insanes after 2.5k plays when i realized you should turn mouse acc off

^ hahaha

well as for me - from 1 pc to 300 pc in a row :3
pet
took me about 1k-1.5k to pass insane, then almost 4.5k to get really good accuracy on said insanes, including sightreads

still terrible at streams though ( can only do 160 bpm ) but I can single tap 265 somehow
quaternary
It didn't take me too long (~.5k plays), but I was playing osu!droid for a long time before that. It took me around 400 or so plays to get used to a mouse and keyboard instead of a touchscreen.

I still can't pass some streamier maps because I got used to streaming with my right hand (196bpm comfortably), but on a computer I have to stream with my off hand (186bpm, and it hurts).

I got much, much better when I turned off mouse acceleration. DO THAT.
- Cloudy -
good job :)
it will take me ages to do but I SHALL PASS!
nrl
It really depends on the player. Personally, I played on and off for a few years without devoting a whole lot of time to osu! (less than 3000 plays over two years), and I could barely pass insanes, if at all. But after recently getting a tablet and racking up over a thousand more plays with it I can FC the average insane in a few retries, and I can FC easier ones on the first read if I'm really on my game. But I've been playing rhythm games and actual instruments for almost ten years, so rhythm recognition and finger dexterity were non-issues for me; it was more about learning to read beatmaps and getting my mouse/pen hand up to snuff.
Zalaria
Heck if I know, like around 3 or 4 months I think. I was passing several insanes and hards, and then about 3 weeks ago I realized I can turn off mouse acceleration XD Took awhile to get use to, but it really does help ^^
Knarf
I only know I can turn off mouse acceleration now... That's why I thought tablet was much easier.
IBlindAngel
Around 5 months or so. Still can't pass some of them but I keep practicing everyday x3

Just did my first Insane today, which is my second day playing osu!. I might try different insane songs from the ones I've been doing to see I can pass more. I get close to the end of them, but not able to finish them yet :P. Improving every day with 309 play counts (Most of them are just doing the same maps over and over :P)
Kanye West
-GN probably could pass them on his first play of the game.
TRIYP
I started playing osu back in 2010 on a pretty crappy setup and couldn't really play the game at all. Long story short I ended up getting frustrated after about 13k plays and quit for a year. The most I could manage when I quit was passing hards nomod with an A rank. After coming back I managed to start playing insanes about 2-4 weeks after coming back at approximately 16k playcount.
Alitor
I can pass some insane songs but not all :D I only been playing seriously for a month. Hoping to get even better later :D
vape
I played hards on my 5th day, insanes after a week and a half. I had about 2000 hours in TF2 beforehand, so I was very comfortable with my mouse. I have a natural sense of rhythm, too.
Aquamarine
2 months. 4mo's for harder more jump oriented maps. 6-12mo's for more insane-insane maps.
It seems these days people try to rush into insane maps too quickly. My advice; keep a steady pace and don't set your expectations too high.

It took me about 2k plays for my first insane map... But then i had a rage fest and returned to obtaining PP through hard mode maps. Got bored of that and took a month and a half break from osu.

I recently got back and started practicing nothing but insane maps (since they are ridiculously fun). I have been beating insane maps left and right somehow LOL. (Soon i will be fcing them hopefully)

P.S: I also started off learning insane maps by using the no fail mod. Once you get use to the speed it gets a lot easier.

As long as your passionate about the game eventually you can beat any song just takes perseverance

About 2k to 3k play, Pass with B or C.... About 4k-5k Pass with A (Sometimes)

Seeing some of the maps that come out now, and compared to ones I played when I started, I wonder if I was even playing "insanes" then. What's an insane anymore anyway? I still fail some insanes lol.

It's a bit like this... as a not-to-scale (insane wouldn't fit on the page) example for how many different levels of skill can fall into each difficulty:

[------EZ------]
[--Normal--]
[--------Hard--------]
[---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Insane---------------------------------------------------------------------------------]
[----Extra----]

So as a solution we sorta divide "Insane" into sub-parts. And a lot of Insanes are classifiable extra's... or just glorified hards.

Pretty sure that as far as this thread goes, qualifying for passing insane songs was really just about finding one you could pass "by name"... and there's a fair number of easy ones that can do that for you.

For me i count everything 210 bpm and above as extra, so i dunno if i am considered passing insane...since i can't beat anything at 210+ bpm

Some "insanes" are over 210bpm and still easier than some others insanes below 170bpm
BPM doesn't define how hard a map is

i see, well its just that the 210+ bpm maps that i have tried have been ridiculously hard so i sorta used it as a measurement. Sorry for the misinformation then.

I started passing around 1~2K plays, which was around 1 month, being able to A insanes took a little longer.
-Ryosuke
I don't really know tbh.

I began to play insane songs one year ago because I used to play easy/normal songs for like.. a whole year? Then I just start spectating people like Elysion, Colored, else.. And wanting to be as good as them and started directly by insanes.
Amianki
About a couple months. Maybe around 700 or so plays.
3GidiZ
Somewhere about two weeks ago when I got bored doing normal/ez ones (around 2.5k plays or so) I thought "Ok, I'm bored as hell, let's go die in insane". Then it was just like that - fail a lot, pass few and laugh like crazy. Doing insanes is so much fun and by now I can say I even improved since I beat my old results and score a lot higher ones :D
AirCantus
I passed my first insane song when i played like 1200 times, and now i only play insanes, collabs, and stuff :}
JareDeZane
I think I passed my first insane after 2k plays. I THINK.
Mamoru Senpai
6 days (didn't pay attention to the plays at this time).
H4ks
first 3-4 days: got to know the game and did easy A-S
said to myself:lets move to normal, so I wont be that used to the slow speed
7 days: had trouble with hards and was confused how should I get better
10 days: doing hards
15days :figured out to use my ears than my eyes
17 days:HARDS A-S , some needed to learn
18 th day > today: Jumped to Insane and doing B-S , sometimes C
play count about 1100
I think the best way to do this is to move on when you can do the difficuly on A, then train accuracy and use ears more than eyes

PS: Guys when you finished your first The big black beatmap without nofail?
edit:playing with mouse+keyboard:3

Lol and then there is me that's been playing Osu for 3 years and can barely play hard.
but I never played much when I first downloaded it.

I think I did easy for awhile when I first got it and then I stopped
played again for maybe a couple days and moved to normal

and played randomly here and there.
Never more than 3 days in a row I don't think lol.

BUT NOW I HAVE MY TABLET and Im enjoying my progress already

Also, the fact that you played songs you couldn't beat with nofail is actually the smartest thing you can do to improve. Most people think they have to play songs they can pass to improve but really playing what you can't or can barely pass is the best way to move forward.
But thelewa says u have to play songs that u always get over 98% . Who is right? xD

We're talking about different things. JAKACHAN is talking about improving in aim and speed, and I'm talking about improving solely on accuracy.
-Tabzz-
i think after around 3k plays i started passing insanes regularly. I fc slower ones easily now, and complete harder ones with ease 90%+ most of the time.

Wow :o I feel kinda bad I have almost 9k plays and still I get mostly B/C ratings on insanes, I even have d ratings on some streamy maps(I stream like shit on some maps getting only 50/100s =s) And there are still alot of harder insanes i cant pas even after 50+ plays on the map^^

VioletMaid wrote:

Actually playing mainly to improve after getting a tablet had me able to SS and S insane maps in 2 months (i'm lazy as fuck though and not nearly as committed as all these kids playing), and buying the black widow keyboard has me able to stream really well after a few months (and even stream kinda fast, not that fast though).

I lose skill rapidly if i don't keep playing :(. It's really annoying.

key for success: Play with a tablet for 5 hours or so once you get it, instantly use a big area (look at like M A I D's profile to see for example) play easy maps whatever you gotta do to get used to it. Once you do just start doing insanes/hards, your skill will increase super rapidly.

Main thing I noticed when I got a tablet is that I was instantly really good at spinning (430-460+).

The effort required to play with a tablet is like 1/15th of a mouse. And I love using the mouse, i play all kinds of fps games, good aim good reactions etc, always a top player in whatever game but osu! is just perfect for a pen tablet.

TLDR: buy a tablet if you like this game and don't have the irrational tablet hating mentality because you can't afford one. orz

Tablet area is highly relative to each players preference. I started with a small area but my friend made me change to full area because he said I'd play better. I was struggling with jumps for many months until I decided to try my original tiny area and bam after 4 hours of practice I went from having trouble fcing nomod insanes to fcing insanes with hdhr (which I had never done before that, ever).

I think niko gave the advise that you should pick the area you feel comfortable with reached the ends of the screen with.

1 week as soon as I upgraded my mouse. LOL

Stop playing maps you can get a good score on and play maps that you can barely pass. You'll improve loads in no time.
mad Lou
After 1800 plays I'm able to pass easy insane Maps. Like this http://osu.ppy.sh/s/44132 or this http://osu.ppy.sh/s/43698
tokaku
After 11k plays I could FC insane maps without doing much. What I do is play maps slightly harder than my level. This way I slowly progress up. Jumping right into really insane songs with no fail would just make me panic and go around smashing my keyboard which isn't a good habit or thing to have when playing Osu. I'd turn on half time if it's too fast.
SkylXTumn
Hmm... About 800+ plays or so for me, I started being able to do easier insanes, how 'easy' they are exactly... Now at 1.2k plays, I play mostly insanes only, can't pass the ar9 hard ones etc, but I've been doing decently on quite a few ar8's. Hoping to pass maps like Wahrheit by 2k-2.5k plays!

Also was when I switched off mouse accel, turned it to 6/11 and put 1.7x on Osu. :D (I don't get how people play with 1.0x, it just doesn't sync with me, I feel most comfortable on 1.7x)
Jerome
About 2500 plays before I can do most insanes, though not the really hard ones (like in the World Cup).

At 2500 plays with the mouse I was doing hard songs no problem but insanes were a bit hard. Then I bought the tablet, and 20 plays later I was doing insanes without problem.
zquiller
If you really try and practice every day, you can complete some Insane maps in rank 60K, that's like the minimum rank I guess...hehe
Multtari
Easy: Skipped
Normals: Starter, HR before going into hards
Hards: A bit over three weeks since starter
Easy insanes: Week or two later so 4-5 weeks since starter
AR9 insanes: 6 weeks

Can't remember the ranks, started doing video collection since starting this game though i played about 200 plays in 2011 but it was like starting all fresh.

Mostly get b's and c's but the occasional a's if i practise the beatmaps hard enough.

Also, i found osu sorta my reaction time in cricket as well, and im able to react more quickly to fast bowlers.

After my first 24 hours of playing I was able to pass hards, then after about 2 weeks or so I was able to pass insanes. Getting past the SUPER hard songs like Scarlet Rose / Freedom Dive takes a long time.

Also what do you mean by theres no way i can fc that song? Its not even that fast. Ive seen plenty of people fc songs harder than that with less playcount.
