Everytime osu! updates, it lags like he!! on my computer. After a few weeks, it runs fine, but we get another update! Why does my computer lag when osu! had just updated. Here are my specs straight from the Toshiba website

PROCESSOR*
Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM Processor
OPERATING SYSTEM*
Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), SP1
GRAPHICS ENGINE*
Mobile Intel® HD Graphics
GRAPHICS MEMORY*
64MB-1696MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory

With the frame limiter off and with all of the graphical additives on, the counter reads about 1,400 fps.

When's the last time you had a defrag?

I have no idea how to defrag. Can you help me? I'm on Windows 7 (64-bit)

You can probably just type "defrag" into the search bar. If you have that disabled, press Windows+R and type "dfrgui", then click OK.

According to the program, my hard drive defragments every week at 1:00 AM. I'm running one now just in case.

I just installed a Java-based program. THEN I started getting lags. I uninstalled it, changed settings, nothing. Help?

Simple.

mine is if i move my mouse the game is lagging i reduced the sinsitivity but it is still laging

Weird... After receiving the update tonight, I am getting some sort of lag towards the very last note of every map I played. Some maps lags more than others (ie will force you to miss a note).

Anyone else experiencing the same?

FYI nothing's changed in my system. I've had no lag issues before the update. Though probably unrelated, I've also checked my internet speed/ping and task manager and they all comes clean as expected.

My osu is sitting in another HDD and I've also checked that nothing is scanning/indexing/defraging the drive.

I'm at a loss at what could've caused this and what other information I could provide =.=

UPDATE: Just tried on the test build. There was no lag at all. On standard version of osu it's still lagging on the very last note anywhere from 200-1000ms for every song.

I'm getting the same problem that I used to. As soon as osu! starts after an update, the framerate and audio start stuttering. WTF is going on?

Since the last update....everytime i play taiko with taiko skin, the game freezes when the beatmap finish
Also...Hi...my first post
xSensenmann
I barely reach 60fps on shaders now and I wased used to 140+ fps =~= (i need 120+ atleast to play normaly)
extrem lag spikes now
and i have quadcore processor with neat graphiccard x.x (didnt changed anything at the computer)
since that update from today...http://osu.ppy.sh/forum/t/119509&start=0
tried already other resolutions/skins/beatmaps/graphicoptions/etc...
peppy
The updates don't change anything performance wise. Please restart your PC.
xSensenmann
Ahhh~ the pc restart helped (don't know even why pc restarts helps but don't care now)
Thanks peppy
finally 600 fps again

Thanks again

hi! osu is so lag and the background color when i start osu is white...this problem starts when i patched the latest update like 1 month ago.PLS HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM I WANNA PLAY OSU
Jesss
After this update, i'm getting bad framerates (between 39 and 50 fps) when i open the chat console with userlist (F9) in the Song Select Section.
When I reproduce this issue, i take a look to the TaskManager and EVGA Precision (without leaving osu! as background) and the resource consumption is pretty normal IMO (Peak: CPU 25% and GPU only reaches 30% core, VRAM 400/1024mb, osu!process ~400mb SYSRAM).

I'm experiencing this issue no matter if i'm using osu! Windowed or Fullscreen, with different resolutions (from 800*600 to 1280*960 (native)), with or without framerate limiter, with Aero (Windows 7) or Classic theme. I have restarted my computer several times since the update release (updated yesterday).

I just read this forum and still no solutions

DO THIS:
1.Open task manager
2. go to processes tab and you will see this
3. Select a program that you do not use and press end task :P

Wow...pretty high RAM consumption when you took the picture...FAIL.

I installed Windows 8 Pro (with WMC) and the issue persists.

Im experiencing 1-2s of lag only when the screen flashes (side board flash effect i think). Even if i delete the bg, the lag still persists. I can see the approach circles pause and then accelerate during closing in and my tablet will lag at the same time as well. Anyway to fix this?

I'm having the same problem, it's laggy when I'm playing. ;A;

I tried osu.exe in task management > priority normal to low. It's still laggy.
I tried toggling the frame limiter. I don't even know what happened, is there even a difference? ._. 'cause it's still laggy.
I don't even know what Nvidia is and where it is located.
Isn't there any easier way? I'm just a kid here so I'm helpless. ._.

Sorry for asking too much.. But I want to fix this since I love this game.

I've done by right clicking and select start task manager and click on the processes tab
and I almost forgot the higher the memory it takes
Estimate Value 100,000k
it is most likely to start a lag higher than that like in my picture which has a pretty high memory
With that high memory, I can play with 40 fps
to reduce the memory size it used, select program that you do not use and click end task

Ok, so I have yet another typical lag problem on my computer...

I don't know how "special" my case is, but I can't seem to fix it... so here's my problem:

To put it short, I'm using DirectX renderer, and it lags a lot. Basically, I can visibly see frameskips roughly every quarter of a second.
The funny thing is, if I switch to OpenGL, it's completely fine. But if I record something (using a screen recorder), DirectX is still laggy, and OpenGL... well, that's broken when I record stuff (it goes to 10 fps).

My computer SHOULD be able to handle it, also. It has an Core i7 processor with 6GB RAM, running Windows 7 (Home Premium, I believe)

I'm also using dxtory as a screen recorder, using the Alparysoft Lossless Codec, if that helps. I record at 60 fps. I've also tried recording with other softwares (like FRAPS), other codecs, (like Lagarith), and other fps speeds (like, 30, 120, etc.) Nothing works so far.

I really want to switch back to DirectX permanently instead of using OpenGL all the time, since I know that OpenGL is not very stable.

So basically, what I want is to record a seamless, lagless, video, and switch back to DirectX. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I can probably suggest to use bandicam or otherwise use half size, setting the fps limiter to 120 if doesnt help use 60 using unlimited is not recommended when recording but try it out. Record in fullscreen with less resolution using native can be a little harsh for your recorder. This comes nifty for the setting of Osu Priority in task manager to low allowing the program to record smoothly.

Use directX btw also make sure its up to date

I have an issue that I'm not sure if anyone else has encountered. For almost every single map at a certain point in the song the music will keep going but the beatmap will lag, usually not responding to any input for about 0.5 seconds, and it always throws off a combo. However, as long as you go through the part where the song lags once as long as you only hit retry and don't return to the song select section of Osu! the lag will never appear again. It's definitely nothing to do with background processes or anything like that because it lags at the exact same point and my specs are good enough where it'd pretty unlikely that i'm lacking in resources.

I'm running bootcamped Windows 7 on a Macbook 15" Retina.

Its either SB lag or Video making it lag but Im not pretty sure I always get this kind of prob since then as well

I don't think that's right. I just doubled checked and the occurs regardless of whether or not the SB or video are on or not. It's also not my skin because it happens on multiple skins.

Re-checked well one thing for me to guess is the memory
zinckingeye
i have experience gameplay lag after i update(update that contains replay speed of .5x). and memory usage is 200+ at initial instead of 100+mb.

I guess I'll have to just live with the lag. I have 8gbs of RAM and it gets nowhere close to maxing out at any point in osu!.
Dark Espeon
I've been trying to find the solution for my problem, seriously. If this was discussed somewhere - I didn't find it. Sorry. ;)

Anyway, here's my problem. As soon as I double click osu!, it's starting picture appears (as usual), but then my mouse disappears. Well, actually it's like the whole game window became transparent and I can't see anything. I can hear the music, I can hear the sounds of pressing buttons, I can play beatmaps normally. But all I see - is my desktop! No sliders, no backgrounds, no hitcircles. Not even a black screen. Nothing. :o
I tried reinstalling osu!, everything was okay until it started loading all songs I have got thus far. It has crashed (Idk why), and then this bug happened again.

Can you help me with this?

Lower your resolution and play windowed I manage to replicate that kind of problem but playing on windowed mode with 800x600 solved mine :)

My Osu! starts lagging as soon as there are sliders in the beatmap but as long as there are only hitcircles it works perfectly fine. Also the menu and the audio are not lagging at all. I didn't have any problems with Osu! around 3 days ago but I updated it now so could that be the reason for my problems??
I restarted my laptop afterwards and didn't change any settings at all before the lags started. It's on DirectX with 120fps and Low-End-PC.
I tried changing to OpenGL and a lower fps rate but that didn't help either :(

Ever since the last update to Osu! my game has been getting long sputters of lag, and for the life of me I cannot seem to find out why. I have the same problem, but it starts in the menu and is present throughout my game, regardless of sliders or song selections or the options menu, it lags on them all. My settings have been perfectly fine up until now, so that leads me to believe it is something added to the game.

Whenever I do multiplayer on here my mouse seizes to move how I want it to. Like if I try to move it straight left, it might go up and to the right. The input is just uncontrollable. Nothing wrong with my Internet, and my mouse has never done this outside of this game.

Gamebooster is pretty much helpful but sometimes not required
and btw a little note don't defrag the osu directory using gamebooster

what can be the cause for this?
it happens when maximizing the gamewindow or playing maps in osu! standard mode.
taiko, CtB and mania are fine.

the cause might be very poor Graphics, ram and cpu since this is on a Asus VivoTab smart me400c which runs full x86 win8
its a intel atom 1,8 Ghz (might be dualcore) and 2gb RAM, it says that is has a maximum of 725mb grafics ram and i dont know the coreclock

i'd like o know what's wrong if it isnt cause of the performance

Posted two methods that I discovered that will improve performance in your game. You can find these in the OP.

Edit: I should note that I don't think this thread is regularly checked for new issues. If your issue isn't tended to within a couple days of posting here contact a member of the support team. You don't need to post your issue here and may post in a separate thread. It is not so easy to troubleshoot such issues in a large thread.

Thought this'd be the best place to hunt for help.

After playing osu! for a few weeks, I tried my hand at the beatmap editor. After trying .mp4 files into osu!, I converted the file to .mp3 and began mapping. Being horribly inexperienced, I gave up after a few hours and deleted the map, and took a break from osu! for a bit. However, when I came back (this is about the start of July, maybe a few days after), I found immense visual lag on both the menus and game. Turning off all the special effects and turning on the FPS counter, I saw a 10-20 FPS drop in the songs, and up to a 50 or 60 frame drop at spinners. So I ran windows update, updated Avast, updated Java, made sure DirectX was updated as much as possible, ran osu updater multiple times, ran defrags and virus checks, and uninstalled and reinstalled.

My osu build is b20130626, and I'm using Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 Home Edition Version 2002. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, 2 GHz processor speed. But osu ran perfectly before this incident, so I don't know if the physical specs are the issue.
Sweetasna
From all what I read I do not understand xD included in Osu and instead of having the 150 FPS drops me to 20-10. ALL I turned off. Help please c
Ripcraze
I'm getting random slowdown on beatmaps at the start and at random intervals during. On a i7-4770k and a gtx 770, I have it limited to my monitor refresh rate, which is 144fps. I have also tried to remove frame limiting but that did not help as well, even tho it's always at 2500+ fps it's still slowing down at times.
TheVileOne
This post is going to be messy. I have limited knowledge on this. Some of what I say is based on observed opinion.

You should try switching to OpenGl if you're having performance issues. Updating your drivers may help as well. There are probably performance related settings that are reducing stability of the frames. osu! may not be receiving enough resources to run for example. It wont help if you're using the highest resolution setting for your super wide screen with HD osu! textures. You can try using a lower resolution to stabilize your frame rate.

You may be experiencing input lag. Movement of the cursor requires frames to reflect movement. Large changes to the frames being processed can have an effect on how accurately you can move the cursor. You should try to reduce the amount of frames the game drops/adds during spikes. You can try the game's frame limiter. You can use a custom value by editing the config file (maxes at 500). If that doesn't help stabilize your spikes, you could try a program that reduces frames.

I'm not really knowledgeable about refresh rates of monitors. Sorry!

@rip Could you explain what you mean by slow downs?
Ripcraze
@TheVileOne
It's really hard to explain, but I would experience slowdowns on the game, kinda of like when you play something in 60-144fps its SUPER SMOOTH, and when it suddenly drops to 20-30fps it feel REALLY SLOW. That kind of slowdown, but I was still at 144fps all the time.

After doing some testing I can now confirm that I have found a fix to this issue. I'm on Win 7 and I managed to fix these random slowdown by disabling Aero, now it's always super smooth. Seems like it was causing problems, how :?: I have no idea but it works.
Dumie
haha i awhile ago i had this sudden delay on my cursor and i was raging all over =3=ll, but then after a day of idiotically flipping tables, i finally found out that i was on vertical sync. So it wouldnt hurt to try pressing F7 if there was like a delay for no apparent reason. idk, change it to like unlimited or something. Food for thought xP 8-)

you could try to disable the video, storyboard and beatmap skin? Also in options you can try disabling some of the settings for details settings.
CodeS
Since last Update i've been getting a small delay at the start of some songs, it's not that big, but if the Notes start at the same time the music kicks in (like with no break or spinner before the first note of the song) it can be annoying.
it doesn't happen all the time, and it's accompanied by a "click" type sound (I can hear with my headphones on very high vol) when it does right at the start.
billy96
So, i basically removed the major lag from my PC by using OpenGL. There are still some minor lag, but they are tolerable. I highly recommend you to switch to OpenGL first if you experience any huge lag.

If you've done all you can on the software side and nothing improves, and you're serious about wanting to play osu! without lag, you will have to seriously consider upgrading your hardware - at least to the level where it can play 2010 and newer 3D games without lag - and this means a discrete/dedicated graphics processor / GPU / videocard for desktops and certain laptops, and better laptops with more powerful graphics hardware for the rest.

Lasi i recall, a barebones desktop hardware package (4-core CPU, 4 GB DDR2 and motherboard with AT LEAST ONE PCI-Express x16 slot i.e. graphics card slot) will run at least $200, and a (PCI-Express, of course) graphics card will run anywhere from $75-150 or more. And please, don't be a cheapskate, get a Power Supply Unit (PSU) that is AT LEAST 500 Watts or more (and should have most, if not all the needed power connectors).

The rest are irrelevant with MAYBE the exception of Serial ATA standard hard disk drives, or if you intend to go bulls to the walls, an SSD for your Windows OS + performance emphasis programs e.g. osu! and the rest on some massive capacity SATA drive. (While you can still use your good old PATA/IDE hard drive, it probably won't be as fast in terms of program / file / song / beatmap loading times.

Of course, all of this assumes you can build your own PC and have the OS installation disc, drivers, etc.

Having a UPS is optional (maybe if your power company is a reliable one) but if you do, get one that is rated MORE than your PSU's max output + all vital peripherals' wattages. Just because the UPS says 600VA does NOT mean it can support 600 watts (it doesn't) - go look for the rated max wattage output of the UPS in battery power mode. I personally run my tower, modem, router and monitors on a 1200 watt UPS unit, and have been laughing off brownouts, power outages and power glitches/spikes/drops ever since.
Marcin
Actually, any laptop featuring 3rd and 4th generation of Intel I-series should be able to run osu! smoothly since they use HD4000 / HD4500 (or something like that) which is good enough to run osu! decently, same applies for PC, if you don't play any other games than osu!, I'd more recommend buying motherboard with support for Intel's Integrated GPU within CPU, possibly HD4000, and it will work like charm.
Zaphirox
Anything related to laptops
I suggest switching to windows classic(no theme), resolution 800x600, apply gamebooster 3, close any background programs running(torrents, setups, browsers, IRC, scheduled scans and updates, firewalls[depends]..etc. ]

Another thing is using framerate 60/120 don't use unlimited since the last time I used speedfan with the unlimited on laptop actually overheats
Higher the fps higher the processing you can use customframerate=60 , MyPCSucks= 1 in the [userhere].cfg

When downloading beatmaps use this method
close osu, download new beatmaps and drag them to the songs folder so once you open up osu its processing

Is this thread supposed to be resolved?
XPJ38
No. Unresolving.

edit2: didn't see this thread until now, my bad.
TheVileOne
I didn't either. I went directly to the resolved forum without checking.

Probably I should repost here
I always have a HUGE lag spike when the online scoreboard appears (after loading) when I'm already playing the map..
My only workaround is to switch to a local one.. Or sometimes I'm lucky and scoreboard loads fast, before notes appear
Can some optimization be made on this?

I have the 3rd problem in the start of the topic.
Basically, whenever I'm playing, it just freezes lightly and I miss a note for no reason.
I can't play like this and I've tried closing ALL background processes, all USB ports removed, but it still happens. What the hell is going on?

I have this problem where my hit circles, sliders and spinners are delayed from the song. The hit circles don't match with the beat of the songs. I have the same problem with all of my beatmaps. What should I do?

But it doesn't work

I'm getting constant lag spikes at certain moments in certain Beatmaps I play. I did check the front page and skimmed through a few pages to see if there was a resolve for me, but to no avail. Furthermore, my mouse seems to want to fall behind at certain points where it begins to have a lag and I have to pull it ahead of the song.

I used 60 FPS (Vsync) and have tried other FPS limits, but nothing has worked. I use DirectX, and touching OpenGL does not solve a single thing. I also have turned off many of the features already, so I shouldn't have anything CPU intensive. My CPU usage while playing Osu! is at 5% if that's worth anything, so it doesn't seem like it's even close to grinding.

I have 12GB of Ram and a 3.6GHz i7 Core, so I'm a little confused with what's going on. The only other thing I could possibly think it is, is the fact I have an integrated graphics card, however it's a $300 motherboard made by ASUS so I imagine it could easily withstand Osu! (As it has withstood harsher games).

Aaaaye! I recently switched from windows 8.1 to windows 7 due to excessive bloatware that was slowing my computer down. But now I am experiencing extreme performance drops in osu! when i am running it on the same hardware, just different OS. Any halp would be appreciated.

I have done things such as limit to 60 fps and run it in windowed and full screen mode. I have also turned off all graphical settings examples being hit lighting and snaking sliders. I am currently trying to re install the game to see if that helps.

Same thing is happening, but for me it also has everything freeze and loop the audio nonstop for a few seconds then goes back to normal. I tried everything and what i noticed while looking at the processes during the audio loop and freeze, the "CPU" number would turn from 03 to 00.

Wut is happening T_T

I have a problem about the Video Playback.
When I play a beatmap using video, the video freezes and restart (video lags), and it ALWAYS happened right in the same second.
Please help, thanks.

I started experiencing really heavy lags while playing recently. To the point where game starts resembling some slideshow - playing insanes is VERY fun now. The fun thing is that FPS counter shows something in 120~80 range.
I can't be really sure, but it seems this all started right after OSU! updated a few days ago. Not to mention that the FPS counter itself somehow turned on automatically after that update.

Lags appear occasionaly, last for a while, then disappear. As I wrote that post, for example, at the beginning osu! was lagging furiously, but now FPS counter shows 600-900 fps, and lags disappeared completely, and the game's running VERY smoothly.
Also, everything seems to be a little better if I close Opera and other programs, but - they're not eating any resources except memory (and only 1GB is consumed, checked via taskman), and everything worked just fine even with much more heavy background load less then two weeks ago.

I didn't change/update/install anything into the system for some time before/after lags began, so that can't be the reason. Also tried limiting the framerate to 60/low end PC modes - no luck, no changes at all.

Sys Specs:

Win XP SP2
Core2Duo E2200
NV Geforce 8600GT
2GB Ram

I understand that issue might be because of browser being a bitch and overloading the system while opened on some pages, which together with the hellish air temperature (>30 celsium ATM) would cause something throttle-like in the processor, but temperature is below 45 cels. on CPU and about 60 on GPU (according to everest, BIOS shows something about 30 for CPU), so I don't really think this is the case.

P.S. Digged into the matter deeper while writing this. Lags certainly seem to appear when I have Opera opened on some pages w/heavy animation, because it's eating up the processor, but they appear as well when it is minimized and CPU usage, aside from OSU, is 0. And then again, everything worked just fine until recently, even with the animated pages in the background. Also, seeing lags while FPS shows 350+ is amusing.

P.P.S. While I'm at it, two other bugs, rather minor compared to that one:
1) OpenGL mode seems broken - OSU! would flash with transparency roughly once a second, hence it's nearly impossible to play.
2) While in Multiplayer, when everyone is ready to play, if you hit F5 and, while you're updating, host will start the game, then you'll be back to the multiplayer screen and everyone else would just stall. Encountered this only once, don't know if it's repeatable.

UPD: aaaand osu just crashed while in multiplayer. It seems something is broken after all.
Believe it or not, I play with the same pc, but with a NVIDIA GT210, and it goes pretty fast. Only change your GPU and you can play ANY game. Really. ANY

I have same problem here, I played a beatmap (no video) I get above 1.000 fps. BUT when I play a beatmap with a video, I only get 130 fps and sometimes dropped to 70 or 30 fps. is there someway how to fix it?
Bara-
Videos take up many space in ram
Also, most videos are only 30 fps, so there probably will be problems with high Fps-es

My game on my new pc has unbearable lag. This desktop has good specs and kind run most games on the highest settings.
The lag is constant; it occurs even in the menu at startup. It will freak out for a few moments, smooth, freak out, smooth, etc.
I can't fix it. I have tried different frame limits, openGL, vsync, updating it, restarting my computer, and even reinstalling with both installers. Nothing seems to work. Some Specs:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20Hz 3.20 GHz
RAM: 12.0 GB
System Type: 64-Operating System, x64-based processor

Hello sir, i assume this game is Only take up a single core of processor, and not optimized for multi Core Processor.

i alerdy run a benchmark with
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E 6500 Vs Amd Athlon II X3 455 ( both i Overclocked to 3.5 Ghz )
GPU : Nvidia GT 440 1 GB DDR 5
Ram : 4GB

The result was
The Dual Core Get Higher FPS @1100 - 1200 in game
while the athlon II x3 455 triple core processor only have FPS Around 800-1000 in Game

so i hope this game will well optimized in future for multi core processor so it can take advantages from the multicore cpu horsepower. also make fps drop nearly impossible :)
