The workaround appears to be simply using puush urls as they lack extensions. http://puu.sh/1RvQ2 for example, would be allowed by the system because it simply searches for the word gif in the url. An alternative is to use animated png files instead. Animated signatures are silly anyway.
Technically, .gif's are against the forum rules. But please, as a rule of thumb, try not to make them too eye straining.
