I have read Yotsubato quite a while ago, it is indeed a great start but nowadays actually a bit too easy for me. Just in case anyone here is interested in nice beginner level manga, Crayon Shin Chan is on a similar level as Yotsubato.
Will take a look at the other suggestions, thanks!

Luna, I guess you are proficient enough that you can probably read anything you want, given a dictionary and lots of time, so just read the raws of soemthign that is translated and see how you compare (pretty sure you are already doing that though)

Also, aren't seinin magazines usually filled with furigana since teh older audience can read it (the one manga volume on my desk is filled with furigana)? Shonen series should technically have easier vocabulary for a younger audience (However, I don't want to talk about all the made up terms people add in for special attacks and the like)
Luna
Nah, furigana are the helpful little kana next to kanji that indicate readings - I'm happy that Seinen manga don't have those since it forces me to actually learn kanji compounds instead of cheating. Sure, I'll have to look up more stuff, but it really speeds up learning.
I'm just so used to people around me knowing the term that I derped a bit by using it without an explanation xD

The main reason for my request was just to get a few recommendations on manga with semi-realistic settings and interesting storylines since when I tried picking some randomly, they almost all ended up being either utterly boring or mostly useless for studying due to super-specific or fictional topic vocab.
ampzz
Even though this is tedious, why not:
  1. Scan your manga onto your computer or likewise search for a Japanese raw available on the internet.
  2. Use Gimp, Photoshop or any editing software to remove the furigana.
  3. Save it as an independent folder and only reference back to the correct raw for quality checking.
  4. Profit?
It's something a friend of mine got me to do for him. Sure it took a while, but I picked up a better understanding of kanji by doing so.

Complex kanji compositions are present in content heavy stories such as Akumetsu for example.

If you haven't read Mirai Nikki its right along these same stories, and that first one you quoted was really weird ha

Before ampzz gets going, I'll go ahead and rec Onani Master Kurosawa.

http://myanimelist.net/manga/8967/Onani ... r_Kurosawa

The synopsis may sound stupid (at least, I thought it did), but its probably the most surprisingly good manga I've read. If you do get around to reading it, be sure to read the novel that comes afterwards.
Mogsy
Looking into more BL manga, but I do have some qualifications:
  1. No yaoi (since, well, we forbid porn recommendations)
  2. Features more healthy relationships, less implied-rape-is-love type relationships
  3. Preferably more towards the bara body type?
Basically, less fujoshibait. I haven't read a BL manga that hasn't violated that second qualification, so a little bit of help would be appreciated.
ZefxMeep
I love Fairy Tail manga :P

Best Doujinshi that I've ever read. Really hoping that they have another arc for the manga, although the story does continued in a form of novel

So for my suggestion

- Beelzebub
- Buyuden
- TWGOK
- Nisekoi
- Kuroku no Basuke
- etc.

Tower of God (ToG)

I made some grammatical adjustments to the following comment, which is copied from joshue020's post on a Mangafox thread.
"It's about a tower in which people go up floor by continent-sized floor, all for the purpose of reaching the top (134th floor, but technically not the top lolwut) to get their wishes fulfilled. Be it fortune, glory, power, revenge, or anything, the tower will grant it to those who manage to get up there. Along the way, these people are faced with a lot of shit and readers get to see how they cleverly deal with them. That's the mechanics of the tower system.

The story is too complex to give a good summary. There's a lot okay, wayyyy more depth and plot twisting in ToG than in most other Shonen mangas. No bullshit like Naruto, no power up after power up like Bleach, very little DBZ type battles where the one with the bigger stick usually wins.

Well-balanced story. Good character development. Humour. Characters come and go, and dead people stay dead."

Even though:
→ the beginning can be a bit slow and confusing to some
→ the art isn't mind-blowing (it is in full colour though and gets better with every new chapter)
→ there are quite a few names and terms to remember,
I would still recommend this somewhat popular webtoon (close enough to a manga) to anybody. It is currently one of my favourites so please give it a try and don't stop after reading just a few pages!

from the same mangaka, Chikan Otoko. True story (they said), which is posted on 2ch. The romance and pacing is so damn natural and the characters is interesting.

I'm actually a big fan of this webtoon. I watched even before he met a web publisher (Naver). Though, I'm a bit worried how the webtoon will translate to other country.

Side note: I read webtoons a lot. Even my avatar originates from a webtoon (try guess where it comes from).

I wish I could read Korean. It would give me a more accurate feel of the dialogue and such but the English versions I'm reading are alright. I've only recently started reading webtoons but I think they're amazing and really colourful haha

Along with ToG, I'm currently reading Crepuscule, Twelve Nights, The Pale Horse, and Trace. If you don't mind, please recommend some of the webtoons you read to me :D (I hope I can find English translations of them ; u ;)
bmin11
  1. The Great Catsby (yes, Catsby) (Fin)
  2. Denma (it seems like the translation project is on hold at 35/546...)
  3. Cheese in the Trap
  4. Dr. Frost
  5. FANTASY WORLD SURVIVAL
  6. GYON-WOO & JIK-NYU (Fin, but not the translation)
  7. Kiss Wood (Fin)
  8. Melo Holic (Fin)
  9. Peak
  10. Song of Cloud (Fin)
  11. Story of Someone We Know (Fin) (well, the translation isn't)
  12. Ties of Compassion (Fin, but not the translation)
I'm actually surprised at the volume of the translated list. Though, there are some bad ones translated over a worthy one.

After reading through these posts, i find that one of my favourite work has been neglected :(
And without further ado, here it is!

http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2984

And on that note, another manga
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=71967

Baka-Tsuki is currently translating the light-novels and they are worth reading!

If you're into horror/seinen, Ibitsu is pretty good.
http://myanimelist.net/manga/16688/Ibitsu
It's a 2 volume story of a guy that meets a woman dressed in a lolita outfit who starts stalking him to become his imouto. cute.

Hideout is another good horror manga with a bit darker themes.
http://myanimelist.net/manga/28361/Hideout
A 9 chapter story of a guy that plans to kill his bitchy wife while on vacation, and of course things go wrong.

If horror isn't your thing, 素晴らしい世界 (what a wonderful world) is a really nice collection of short stories.
http://myanimelist.net/manga/3614/Subarashii_Sekai
Various people have given up on the world but find new meaning and purpose from various events and those around them. Very metaphorical.

Please excuse me if these have been suggested already.

Since you didn't say what exactly you liked about to-love-ru or anything else you read, just going to give a long list of harem based mangas. Tell me what you think is best (going to try to separate it by sub-genre)
LIM Dall-Young (he belongs in his own genre because his plot lines usually all have very similar twist xD)

Action:
Akame ga Kiru!
Blood Lad
Dragons Rioting
Gokukoku no Brynhildr
Isuca
Madan no Ou to Vanadis (I would recommend you read the LN version)
Onamori Himari
Oto x Maho (close enough to a harem)
Unbreakable Machine Doll
Rising x Rydeen (because the premise is so stupid xD)
Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance (I would recommend you read the LN version)
Trinity Seven: 7-Nin no Mahoutsukai
Watashi no Messiah-sama (SnO's autho's best work, plot wise imo)
Yankano!

Psychological: (sort of)
Gamble Fish

Slice of Life: (Basically anything I feel that doesn't below in other categories)
Countrouble
Denpa Kyoushi
Hakoiri Devil Princess (for the most part it fits here)
Hayate no Gotoku!
Kimiiro Focus
Koisome Momiji
Nisekoi
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (I would recommend you read the LN version)
Tsuki Tsuki! (Again, I would recommend you read the LN version)

I know some previous ppl recommended these, but I added them to the list anyway.
