New style cursor skinning

As of the next public release, I am allowing skinning cursors in a similar style to the new default cursor. You can trigger the new behaviour by adding cursormiddle.png to your skin. Keep in mind that when you do this, it will not only add a non-rotating middle element, but also change the way trails behave – they become additive and draw every update rather than at a consistent 60fps. This means that your cursor trail shouldn't exceed the size of the template below or it may affect performance (especially at higher frame limiters, since it will draw more as your fps increases). For best effect, have it hidden behind the cursormiddle element, as per the template.

cursortrail.png

As always, you are free to use the template provided above and make modifications as you see fit.

Sweet! Always wanted to use new cursor trail in one of my skins. :D

So in the next update, what will happen if cursormiddle.png is not exist inside our custom skin folder? Will it disappear (as of current update) or using the default one?

I was thinking that the behavior should be changed to use the default one, because it's kinda buggy on current behavior (you won't see cursormiddle.png if you started osu! under customized skin and switching to default skin).

The behaviour will not change for existing skins, of course. Also I fixed that bug you mentioned (and was the main reason I added skinning support for this; because it was easier to allow it after the fix than to deny it :P).

Oh sweet then~ :)

More skinning possibilities = big big big big yeah

Um, bug report...

Actually the cursor is made of 1×1 pixel cursor.png and default for everything else. In the older edition, the default cursortrail could help to locate the cursor, but in this edition, it's not gonna work.

So could u provide the older edition of cursortrail, and I'll put it into this skin folder? Thx :)

New cursor trail disappears if you stop moving it.
Just remove cursor middle if you want to activate old one version.

Nah, never mind, it's fixed.
I just added a 1×1 pixel cursormiddle.png, and the cursor works as it did before.

It's supposed to be a crosshair or dot or what have you. The idea is that it's stationary, while the outer portion and trail move to aid in paying attention to it.

Looks neat. :D

When I try to replace peppy's default cursortrail on any skin it still doesn't look like the default skin cursortrail, it looks bigger and less smooth.. although when I delete cursortrail.png it works exactly as default. I still don't get how to edit this without undesirable changes, what am I missing of? :?

Something seems off after the update, it used to look way smoother. Here's a video of how it used to look, before the update (my apologies but you'll have to watch at 720p and no fullscreen, terrible quality otherwise). Maybe kinda hard to tell when I'm flailing my cursor around, but check the break at 2:30 if you want to see what I mean.

Supposedly it should look even smoother now, or so I believe the changelog said, but that is most certainly not the case.

The issue is, the new cursor trail used to leave a continuous trail of light behind, no spaces, now it only leaves a bubbly path behind.

I think you should remove cursormiddle.png and continue using old cursor style (only cursor and cursortrail).

Ok i found the reason.
That's because cursormiddle.png (no matter how it appear, even transparent)
In my case, after i deleted it, the cursor moved smoother again. ._.
NAGISACHAn_old
But if you remove the cursormiddle it uses the old style no?
Its smoother but nowhere near as smooth as others : [
Check out my new sexy mainscreen after the update too, my game has got a lot buggier by latest updates, this is on a reinstall too.

i think that's the best way for now if you want a smooth cursor, since the new UI still contains many problems, all we can do is wait for next update xD

I have the exactly same issue right now. The best solution i've found is to merge cursor.png and cursormiddle.png, then delete the last one from the skin folder. It becomes smoother.
