I joined Jan 10, 2010 and quit for quite a while until I noticed my friends were playing the game, and decided to pick it up again. After messing with my settings and getting a new wired mouse and mousepad for gameplay, I picked up the game once more. I'm no <insert high ranking osu! player> for sure, and I don't stay in the top 40 of songs for long, but I'm steadily getting better at this game and haven't met my plateau yet.

Things I've learned(personal opinions):
  • Tablets are over-rated
Polling rate is important for mouse play
DPI is just sensitivity you can adjust on your mouse and has nothing to do with tracking
Accuracy rating is not as important as your ego may make it out to be
Playing a song with no-fail on to disable the skin is worth it 90% of the time
Sometimes disabling a background video makes a beatmap boring [One OK Rock]
    Invisible 300s are amazing
Streams are easier to do with the keyboard
Replaying/revisiting a song you got a moderately good score on, and beating it, is more rewarding than beating extremely hard beatmaps
Alternating keys for single beats can confuse your fingers and make you forget to hit any button entirely
Breaking combo on sliders makes me sad
But the important thing is that, I'm having a ton of fun playing! Remember guys, the fun part isn't getting to the destination- it's the journey. :)

i only had the alternating hit issue for the first week or so i started alternating - probably couldn't stop if i tried now. glad you're having fun!

Finally someone realizes this before blindly jumping on the wacom bandwagon.

I was about to say what IppE said when I hit the reply button.

Also, alternating isn't bad necessarily it's just that most players have to learn it and don't start playing with it so it seems harder. (Even though I still like single tapping better)

Glad you are having fun though keep it up :D

Just that i got on the wacom bandwagon because i got on free .

Not to mention, whoever spends £100 on a mouse to play osu is a bit silly

I mean look at Doomsday, he has a crappy £5-10 mouse and is rank 100-200 with it.

Thanks for the replies! I've recently started alternating keys when ending a slider on top of another slider's beginning. I've been struggling to climb the ladder, but I'm seeing steady upward progress and I'm feeling very encouraged.

As far as expensive mice go, I use the Logitech G9x but not just for Osu! I can blow my friends away when I hit smaller circles though. 1000 polling rate really helps with accuracy.

Don't want to disencourage you but that's not a big deal at all, being able to easily clear Insanes after ~2000 plays is fine and even clearing some hard ones should be possible if you're experienced on this kind of games. You haven't yet reached the hard part of the learning curve and are just playing the easiest part.

yeah sure it does. but don't use it too often, it will lead you to some mouse driver issues. try lowering your polling rate to 500, to make your mouse life span last longer

Tablets aren't over-rated. I used my friends tablet for a couple of days and I managed to get decent combos on hard insanes (which I would have never done with my own mouse) and it feels much more natural.

Jumps aren't a hassle, neither are patterns and I felt like I had better aim and speed which gave me more to think about my accuracy and streaming speed.

my friends can still do some quite difficult jump on insane song with 20$ mouse and still he got some time to think about his accuracy

I never said mausu was bad... infact i'm using some crappy 100 dpi stock mouse atm and i'm not complaining.
