I remember when I switched from smallest to full in 1 day and learned it in a couple of days how to use full. Can depend on other stuff like playing osu! with window or full screen mode, size or the monitor and so on...
Salvage
u got used to it that easy? .. okay maybe its not that bad, i cant picture me playing full tho, that size its ok.

and yea i guess i'll suck for a day or 2 with that area till i get used to it

I hold the pen like a pencil and use full area as well (With force prop) and I have no problem. Really just takes some time to get used to it took me about a week as well to start doing what I could do before, but now I feel much more confident in my ability to do any type of jump or mod.
Salvage
yea with my new area its noticeable how i can do some patters i couldn't before, but full area its too much imo

I hold the pen like you do, but I don't use my wrist. As I use fullscreen, I can't use my wrist because Im not able to reach the corners of the tablet.

same here

I write small and writing big is impossible for me which is why I chose to use a small active area

also I grip the pen very tight :(

I have to say to everyone who is playing small area that i played small area for almost a year then changed to a medium one and the difference is ridiculous, i got insanely way better with this area i can't even understand why
RaneFire
It sounds like learning to play on both large and small area is what helps out the most, not only that full area is superior (srs?).
Salvage
i played both (well i didn't play full i'm playing on a medium one) and, even tho i could do really nice stuff with the small area, my improvement with this one is really noticeable, which leads me to the conclusion that a medium area is superior to a small one, atleast from my perspective.

fullscreen in-game same resolution as desktop

Just got the bamboo connect yesterday, was having alot of trouble getting used to it. big areas seem WAY to slow, so i finally settled on this and can play fairly well for 2nd day use.

Maybe ill try expanding the area slowly, fast jumps at this small of an area makes my accuracy lower. Also I hold the pen like I would while normally writing, and I don't touch the pad just hover above it, don't know if thats good or not.

I find it difficult to use a larger area, since somehow, I have to lay my arm down and not move it (this is the total reverse of my mouse playstyle, and it's destroying my wrist.) How does one play with a moving hand and tablet?

Screen resolution: 1920x1200
osu! resolution: 1440x900 windowed
jianzii
So the advantage to using a smaller area is moving your hand less, or is there also another reason a smaller area is nice aside from that?

Iv been using tablet for like 3 months now, and i still cant find a good grip and area so i wont move my wrist , i either shake when its to small or to big, or i just cant reach one of the corners, still changing every now and then between small area/medium xD

Is there any full area players here with a live video by chance, as much as I try to understand I just cannot figure out how to use full area.

What resolution should I be using.

Full area on my Wacom bamboo CTH-670 tablet.

I found it to be pointless for shrinking the area on my tablet for the following reasons:
  1. My hands are massive as it is so I've never had a problem with not being able to reach each corner.
  2. The smaller areas didn't provide the kind of pixel accuracy I prefer after being on low dpi mouse only for quite a few number of months.
  3. I use it frequently for Photoshop so I gradually got rid of the notion of needing a smaller area.
  4. It would be pointless having all of that size available and not using over 50% of it.
  5. I use it as a replacement for mouse control over the desktop and general PC use at times so I got used to it from that as well.
  6. General plug and play for if I'm ever at a place that isn't my own desktop set up.
Sure enough osu! itself runs in a 1440 x 900 windowed resolution but I can easily adjust between that and a fullscreen run at 1920 x 1080 just fine.

RBRat3
Well I do play full area now but my full area is about 4-6 bamboo tablets depending on what size you own.

I did do this video awhile ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_We1CGh-Wg and that was at 1440x900 (I think), I play on the IPS now which is 1080 no difference. I should try playing with quick point on XD
Nyu_old2
That seems more counterproductive than productive if you ask me ;-; but depends if you're just playing for fun or not.
RBRat3
It was when I first started using the 12x18, I usually ended up playing at 800x600 windowed which reduced the area to something like 7x5in. But now it really doesn't matter I can play at any size and adjust to it within the first few notes. Each to their own I rather use my whole arm and wrist than just my wrist. I tried it both ways and it really makes no difference to me and since I have the tablet area I might as well use it. When you scale up the area so does the game like a slider my slider space is about the size 50 cent piece which from the GUI setting pics thats about what everyones active area is set to so Its kinda hard to fuck that up XD

Mainly I own this tablet for the sole purpose of utilizing my whole arm to do work than my wrist just like you do on a canvas, Not only that the grip pen exploits this by being thick like a brush. Its a sad shame since wacom discontinued the 12x18 tablets with intuos 4's so I have nothing to look forward to when this old piece dies and its bad enough that OSU eats my pens up.

Forces your tablet area to the proportions of your screen (If you have a square screen then the area you choose will be square, widescreen the area will be widescreen.)

Instead of trying to explain it in super detail I can tell you right now you want it on.

No way, I never have to move my arm, I've tried full before and I just prefer it smaller. Jumps don't exist anymore!

How do you do with the fast note snapping in http://osu.ppy.sh/b/47152? I also play on a pretty small active area aswell (not as small as yours) and it's those kinds of beats you must snap to that wreck me :\

I got used to the hand/wrist movement (maybe that's bad), but practice makes perfect!

I just got my tablet a few days ago, and thought the full area tablet surface was ridiculous and immediately started trying to figure out how to get the tiny box. I started realizing that small circles were going to be a problem and that it was already kinda hard on my wrist for the tiny movements. It felt just like mouse, which can get kind of erratic and guessy at times. I changed it to full area, and even though I'm still beyond horrible now compared to where I was at with mouse, I can start to tell a difference as to why full is better. It feels like I am going to eventually have way more control and precision once I put more hours in. I can no longer play osu! with mouse even after just two days of playing with full area tablet. The sensitivity on my mouse just feels astronomical, and I miss notes by 2-3 inches on my screen. If you really want to try and improve, I recommend going with the full area like others are preaching here. If you play at full for a few days and go back to the tiny box, you will realize how limited you feel in what you can accomplish.

I just wish this damn pen was easier to hold XD
Anyone have a good grip technique for it? It feels kinda awkward and I can't make up my mind on how to hold it.
Goronica
I just got my tablet yesterday and I tried some different settings and I don't get why you wouldn't use your full tablet. Maybe if you have a very big one it can be a problem.

Full tablet ftw :D I do have a small tablet

thelewa
Full tablet area is very awesome indeed
Amefuri Koneko
I play this area with my wrist fixed, no lifting up or any hand movements. Only fingers and angle usage :3

Would have played full area if I could reach upleft\upright corners more freely.
jianzii
So again, why would full area be more beneficial (for anyone other than people trying to fast track it to a sore arm)?

Because if you can be just as accurate with a smaller area, there really isn't any point to using a larger one?

Because you can't.
Also, larger area gives better feedback of your movements, more accurate snapping on small notes and overall more fun and actually less wrist breaking (less grip pressure, more relaxed wrist, NO PAIN!)
Small area doesn't make jumps easier it's a myth, and not really faster enough so it would count for Osu gameplay compared to meduim\full areas in a long run.

Ami Furi Koneko wrote:

I can totally vouch for this, I really wish I started with a full area. I tried switching a few weeks ago but found it really hard with the 10,000+ PC I already have with the small area. Start full before it's too late!
