I don't think I got my 3DS on launch day but it was within a week of it coming out so close enough!

It still kicks you out of the game. You just get a chance to go to the home menu.

Because that misunderstanding vindicates them for using region locking. They get away claiming it to be a format incompatibility instead of "if (Cartridge.Region != ThreeDS.Region) throw new FuckOffException();" which it is.
