Worry no more!

My PlayStation 3 has awakened from what was an enternal resting state randomly yesterday.
Back to grinding Tekken 6 again to relearn all my old combos pre-Tekken Hybrid and Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

Saving up for a nice 40" to pair up with it so I will actually want to play it again.

Anyone have Saints Row The Third yet?
My order got buggered up so now I have no copy of the game and am currently trying to get my money back to buy it again.

Hey, I'm playing Odin Sphere on the damn PS3. And we mentioned Zelda for, like, two posts.
Azure_Kite
So I'm playing Star Ocean - The Last Hope. I find it fun :D
Ivalset
What other games have you found fun, so I know to avoid them at all costs?!
Azure_Kite
You're funny Ival.

Portal 2, Assassin's Creed, Disgaea 4, the list could go on.
Ivalset
I actually sort of meant RPGs in particular!

Though it's quite telling that you responded with non-rpgs when asked about games you found fun after stating that you found Star Ocean 4 to be fun!
Azure_Kite
Disgaea is an SRPG. Whatchu talking about, fool.
Ivalset
That invalidates it, clearly.

SRPGs are different from RPGs.
Azure_Kite
Fine then.

Can we still be friends, even if we have different tastes in games?
Ivalset
Of course; our friendship was never in question.

You bet.

Nharox
Would you recommend it? Might get the PC version with my brother so we can play the campaign in co-op.
awp
Saints Row 3 is a dumb-as-paste fun game. It's an excellent complement to GTA's realistic feel. imo Saints Row 2 was better than GTA 4 (as in, more fun to play) and Saints Row 3 is, whle very similar, more fun than Saints Row 2. I paid 65 bucks for it (which is quite a rarity) and don't regret it.
ampzz
Wall of text incoming.

The thing with GTA and Saints Row is this:
  1. Create one of the first sandbox styled action games in the community.
  2. Created a game that was senselessly good fun to do stuff you would not attempt to do out of game
  3. Continue to release award winning and highly profitable titles one after the other: GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas.
  4. San Andreas introduced immense character customisation, vehicular modifications and variable body modelling (Carlos could get fat or extremely thin) for the genre.
  5. Saints Row comes along as one of the (then) "next-gen" sandbox titles which is also highly enjoyable which is what made GTA such a good franchise.
  6. GTA IV more or less just slaps all of its fanbase in the face by removing all the enjoyable elements (random sandbox fun, customisation, etc.) and replacing it with a focus on realism which lost about half the enjoyment of the title.
  7. Saints Row Two reinforced the mantra of what sold its original title by increasing customisation level on characters, vehicles and incredibly fun weapons.
  8. Saints Row The Third comes out and continues on with providing its customer base with a highly enjoyable title yet again.
Any discrepancies in anything I did list just then are likely since this was roughly off the top of my head.

Moving on...
Going to pick up Dynasty Warriors 7, Saints Row 3 and Disgaea 4 (since my order got buggered up when I went for the pre-order route) as soon as possible.

Added bonus was finally booting up GT5 after so long and noticing all the fantastic downloadable content available for it like the Red Bull X2011 Prototype '11, man is that fun literally warping around the track with a stock top speed of 492km/h.

Finally beat Odin Sphere. Got the True ending and stuff. I really underestimated those bosses at the end. They are definitely a step up from any of the bosses in the normal game. Really cool game.

@ampzz: So basically GTA was really fun and good, then it got kinda crappy, then Saints Row came in to take the place of the old school GTA feel?
awp

Seibei4211 wrote:

@ampzz: So basically GTA was really fun and good, then it got kinda crappy, then Saints Row came in to take the place of the old school GTA feel?
I guess? Saints Row games are closest to Vice City, I think. That's when the 3D GTAs were the wackiest. The best minigame in Saints Row is definitely insurance fraud. That shit's so fuckin' fun. Dive in front of vehicles and ragdoll through the city to rack up the insurance claims.

But yeah, okay, after you complete something like, the fourth mission in the game, you become free to sky-dive off the top of a skyscraper and parachute onto an unsuspecting dood in a hotdog suit. If you liked any of the GTA games, you'll probably love Saints Row. It has more character customization than the Fallout games (specifically speaking, aesthetics)

Saints Row 3 has made high-speed vehicle jacking a treat. No more strolling up to the car door once the driver stops. Shit, you don't even need to use the car door to get into the vehicle. That's what boots and windshields are for

Oh yes, but better and more entertaining.

Man, I liked Just Cause 2 where you could just zip line onto a car to jack it. Unfortunately, you almost never want to because driving in that game was horrible. Is the driving decent in Saints Row? Cause that was one of the only reasons I liked GTA IV. Some people complained about the driving in that game, but I thought it was good (the driving, not the game).

Alright, there has to be a way one of you jerks can get me Saints Row 2 through this. I know they just limited ps3 gamesharing to 2 activations, but that still leaves me with a copy! Someone throw me a bone.
awp
Saints Row 2 costs like 10-15 dollars, so it's a good way to whet your appetite if you're on the fence and don't want to fork over 50 bucks.

The driving mechanics in Saints Row is...simplified. In GTA4 cars didn't have godly traction and powersliding and control and all that, but they do in the Saints Row games. The car mechanics feel a lot more like the PS2 GTAs, in that you can basically just hold down the gas all the time, and powerslide recklessly around corners and all that. Helicopters are also really easy to fly.
ampzz
Not to mention it is ridiculously fun to just jump out of the helicopter or aeroplane as you reach top speed in it after sending it hurtling towards the unsuspecting people below. :D
awp
My level is in the early 20s, and it looks like endgame you can start becoming invincible, at least to certain attacks. I really hope I can gain immunity to:

that would make for some even more fun dicking around

Holy shit, guys. I think some of you may know that I fucking love the Legend of Zelda series. Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Minish Cap, Seasons, Ages, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks. I may have even put that in order from most to least favorite on accident. Anyway, I just need to preface with that so it doesn't sound like I'm trolling when I say I fucking hate Skyward Sword with a pink and purple passion and I hope it burns in hell. I really almost beat it, too. I'm at the part where I need to talk to Levias or whatever, so I gave it a fair chance.
awp
I finished the first two dungeons of Skyward Sword and apart from the awful writing I've been really enjoying it
Rantai
I need to start it D:

I find what you say to be really funny Seibei, not because I disagree with it, but because it's against what I've heard about the game from other people. A lot of people have told me that it's the reason to buy a wii again if you sold yours. But regardless, I can definitely see where you're coming from.

I've only gotten to right before the second dungeon but I find it pretty good. One thing that I do like is that a lot of enemies will take some work to actually kill, because you have to line up you sword slices. However I would have to say that the motion controls can be a bit sketchy at times and swing the opposite way you intended, but otherwise to me it feels pretty good. Although, I may change my opinion in the future as I got farther in the game as when I played Twilight Princess, I got to a certain point and just lost the drive to play.
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
You guys have to get much further into the game before you can really see why I started hating the game though. The game is fine for the first 3 dungeons or so. But afterwards, they make you backtrack through the first three areas again, which feels like cheating. There's no snow, water, or shadow dungeon. The more you play the game, the more you realize that they care less about using different items to defeat enemies, and care more about their WiiMotion Plus gimmicks. They would be fine if they actually functioned properly more often. Not to mention the bosses don't really feel like Zelda bosses. You guys have got to get to the part where you can swim. I dare you to tell me that controlling Link as he swims is fun. The thing that set me over the edge with that game was when I tried to redo Rickety Coaster to get a Heart Piece, but I kept having to retry because the game couldn't tell if I was leaning left or right.
awp
My two main gripes about the controls are

1, there's no sensitivity slider. I really like to exaggerate my movements when I play, and some games let you configure how much you have to move the controller for it to read the command. The nunchuck is particularly sensitive to that.

2, as mentioned earlier, the tracking IS a little wonky. The wii remote doesn't really handle being pointed away from the TV all that well. Link holds the sword the way you hold the wii remote, and I generally keep the sword behind me and pointed toward the ground when I'm running around but it often doesn't work that way in-game.

It's pretty good for what it is though, and at least decent enough that you can make masturbatory gestures with your sword in front of enemies when you're feeling cocky
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
Yeah, I wish I could amp the sensitivity up a bit for aiming/cursor-based stuff. The sword works well enough, but there have been a few instances where the sword, like, reset positions or something, so everything was off while I was trying to fight. The thing I hate most about the fighting though is when you've got to do that whole song and dance where you have to point your sword in one way, then quickly slice from the opposite direction. So if you start from the right and you need to go left-to-right, how do you quickly move your sword back to the left so you can do that without just swiping your sword to the left and fucking everything up?

I should say that I do enjoy the dungeons themselves though. And upgrading items is cool, but I think it's lame that bags/quivers/satchels take up an adventure slot. Actually, the entire adventure slot system sucks. The item wheel is ok, but it'd be nice if it paused when it was open.

Well, download speed is apparently 7.8Mbps which is... Ehh, 850KB/s. I'm not that impatient to wait, however I might as well just get the extra stuff and...I dunno, overprice it on eBay?

Besides, something tells me I would suck hard at this game. I don't even know why I bought MvC3.

I consider myself to be not completely awful at fighting games, but mvc3 makes me feel like an infant.

Well, I 100%'d Saints Row 3, so I guess it's time for Saints Row 2. By the way, it's really annoying how they didn't let you choose black as a clothing color. That makes no sense.
awp
Saint's Row 2 is probably much harder to get 100% in. I remember the highest-difficulty diversions being really, really difficult (for some diversions). I wasn't able to clear all the drug trafficking ones iirc - particularly because you were confined to a single vehicle and once that thing was on fire, Game Over Man

So I played the very beginning of Saints Row 2, but I don't think I can keep playing that after beating Saints Row 3. Like, it's such a major step down that I just can't deal with it. The fact that I can't just jump straight into cars sucks so bad. And the control scheme is the stupidest thing I've seen. I also miss my character. Some of that wouldn't be such a problem if I wasn't already so entranced with SR3 though.

Saints Row 2 has a quick-car mode as well.

Jump on the hood of the car and press triangle.

SR3 is better than SR2 gameplay-wise, but SR2 had a better character creator
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
You have to jump on the car? That's weird. I liked being able to sprint and jump into the car from a block away.

I will not argue the fact that the character customization was better. But it didn't have some of the options that I used in the third one, so I couldn't even get close to having the same character as the third one. Also, the clothing options were way, way, way better. You had styles, more clothing options, and you could pick black and white for once.
awp

Seibei4211 wrote:

yeah, it's a bug. I don't know if they've fixed it since I last played it though. You go from on top of the car to instantly inside it.

Saints Row 2 allowed me to make Waluigi, so I can never argue with those results.
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
Oh, it's a bug. I thought that was a gameplay feature or something. That would be weird. Anyway, I hate how they switched square and X around in areas like reloading/jumping and handbraking. And R3 to zoom sucks in any game. And this may only be a temporary problem, but it was pissing me off in the beginning. A lot of the times when an enemy would melee me, I'd fall down, get up, then immediately get hit again before I can counter or run away and have to get back up again. So stupid.
awp
I saw some SR3 gameplay videos that demonstrated how wrong I'm playing that game. I like base jumping, but I've never grappled a pedestrian and taken them base jumping with me. There's a cheat code that makes the entire city of Steelport intoxicated and I had no idea.
ampzz
I've never actually had a problem with that instant 'warp' inside a car when you stand on it as it was always a massive time saver when you're in the middle of running for your bloody life. XD

It's a lot nicer than how clunky and retarded trying to steal cars in GTAIV was at least.

Random splice of fun and humour made it enjoyable as heck.
Don't tell me none of you launched yourself from aircraft to land on a car and instantly start driving as if nothing ever happened whilst pissing yourself laughing?

Full campaign or just co-op mode? PS3 exclusive or anything on PS3? Saints Row 3 has full co-op. Haven't done it, but I don't see why it wouldn't be fun. Army of Two 2 and Resident Evil 5 have fun co-op. Dead Island, Borderlands.

Ok, I tried playing some Deus Ex today. I didn't get very far though. I kept getting bored and taking breaks and at one point I even took a nap because of how bored I was. That game makes it seem like you have a choice between using stealth or going in guns a-blazing. But you don't. Because you get a ridiculous amount of XP for doing stealth and you get piddly shit for just shooting them. And when you start an alarm, the game makes you feel like you fucked up. If they want this game to be so stealth-based though, they could've at least made the stealth fun.
awp

Seibei4211 wrote:

I heard they don't because boss fights
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
That's part of the reason why the game's so annoying though. They really, really, really want you to use stealth, but then they have boss fights which basically prohibit that, so it makes no sense.

Edit: Oh, another reason I know they want you to use stealth is that your health regeneration is pathetically slow and you can barely take any damage even on Easy. Also, the controls are permanently configured for a stealth game as opposed to a shooting game (L1 is cover and R3 is zoom).
awp
Cover-based shooters and regenerating health can take a boot to the ass anyway
Topic Starter
Seibei4211
So I think my problem with Saints Row 2 initially was the fact that I tried to jump into that right after beating SR3. But I'm revisiting that game now. That jumping on cars trick is bloody awesome. It's kind of weird how you have to do the activities to get the bonuses in this.
