This is a question I had since I learned to beatmap.

the mapping guidelines always said that you need to have an equality between distance and time spacing. but after I examined many ranked maps, I found out that most of them did not fully follow this rule.
then someone told me that when you make a jump, you need to start a new combo. this seemed to fit what I have seen
then, after I took a more closer look, a lot of mappers make jumps without starting a new combo.
so, can someone tell me, what is the most accurate and general rule about this... because I'm seriously confused

I think this thread goes in here.

Anyways, people who have been helping me have always said that you need to have everything perfectly spaced on Easy and Normal. On Hard and Insane you can try to make jumps around - they are allowed as long as they make sense. I am not the best guy to say this, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, you don't always need a new combo. Whoever said that is a sdjkofjfsfogwgrgjgodks.

ok

But I think it's basically what Mara said, I haven't seen inconsistent spacing in easy/normal difficulties since 2009 and in the few maps where I have noticed it they do make sense.

You are very good at understanding Mara language!

This isn't a rule, but more of Aesthetics. You don't need to do this.

In reality, I believe it's by preference and should match the map/mapping style.
I believe most jumps should stay on the same combo because otherwise it's unreadable if you're not following the basic jump-patterns (boxes, x's, etc).

I don't know what maps you're looking at, though.

Actually it's a combination of what fits the song and your mapping style (like ztrot spacing for example, it's ztrot style to make jumps like those, but they are also used in specific parts of the song in which they fit nicely)

Although breaking distance snap is all cool, it's best to mainly stick to it at least until you have made a few maps and start to develop your style. You get a feel for what plays well and what doesn't that comes with experience.
