Hi guys, this is my second beatmap, and the first one that I've timed myself. The song is an insert from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The title is "God Knows" and it's sung by Hirano Aya. I found it addictively catchy, so I couldn't help but make a beatmap for it.

The beatmap has now been updated to include a very awesome video. Many thanks to awp, who singlehandedly downloaded, edited, synched, compressed, and uploaded the concert scene so that I could use it in this beatmap. I encourage everyone to download this latest version so that you can see his incredible work! The file size is now 24mb total, but it's worth it.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Only did Normal mode.

BPM looks good.

Offset would be better at 2,137.

Spacing is more or less okay, except some areas, for example, the slider at 37:93. Spaced as if it were a half beat away like the previous notes, except it's a full beat.

Sliders seem to end at weird times. This is more personal advice, but for example, the slider at 50:79, I would end it at 52:09.

Fix the timing, fix the spacing issues and I'll look at it again.

Coincidentally, I only did Hard mode.

The guitar intro felt really offbeat. Retime the notes to go along with the guitar riff. All the repeating sliders felt slightly offbeat, you might want to shorten them/change the velocity. Most of the stuff following the lyrics was fine. Nice beatmap. Oh, and you ended the map just before that huge guitar solo. I wanted to play it... Couldn't you encorperate that into hard, since it IS supposed to be hard?

Oh, and add the video.

Yeah, Hard Mode is still very much a work-in-progress. Most of it is just Normal Mode that was copy and pasted - it's not quite meant to be played yet, but it automatically gets packaged. I do intend to incorporate the last guitar solo into Hard Mode, but all of that will come after perfecting Normal. I would like to add the video, but lack the raw and the material to extract it.

Thanks for the advice, I'll certainly incorporate the suggestions into my next update.

Like eiji said about normal, the same error comes up a few times in hard.

19:93 - the 10 and 11 are spaced as if a half beat apart, but they are a full beat
43:73 - The 6 and the 7, same problem
1:16:73 - rather minor, but the blue slider could be spaced a bit further from the previous combo
2:04:13 - the 7 should be spaced further from the 6, but that is rather minor and can probably be overlooked.
2:23:13 - 7 and the 8, too close.

That's all I found.

p.s. - the ending is awesome. Starred.

Thanks for catching those, you were completely right.

19:93 - the 10 and 11 are spaced as if a half beat apart, but they are a full beat
Fixed.
43:73 - The 6 and the 7, same problem
Fixed.
1:16:73 - rather minor, but the blue slider could be spaced a bit further from the previous combo
I think that enough time elapses between them that the player won't be confused.
2:04:13 - the 7 should be spaced further from the 6, but that is rather minor and can probably be overlooked.
I do believe that there is enough space between them to again avoid confusion.
2:23:13 - 7 and the 8, too close.
Fixed.

Now waiting on another mod to give their blessing.

Great song and good timing. I've made some changes regarding beat timing and spacing to your map. Check the attached files and see if you approve of them or not.

A bit of suggestion for your next map: Try adding more variation to the beat placement pattern. More addition of curves and diagonal lines will make you map more interesting.

After looking at it on .25 speed I think you are actually correct. I hadn't anticipated having to go to 1/4, but it does fit better. Thank you very much, I like the changes.

As for my next map - you pretty much read my mind. I promise you that that one is going to have a ton of variation, I definitely want to do things differently with each map.

Going to wait for another approval before ranking.

Well before any ranking goes on, you're going to have to delete your second normal map. Delete it from your folder, then force upload. Should be fixed.
Right you are, thanks for noticing that. I thought I'd cleared both Normal and Hard, guess I missed one.

Could you take a look at the latest version, Rolled, and see if it's rankable yet?

I would recommend you revise the Guitar Solo at the start. Some things feel out of place, especially the repeat sliders.

Also, the background would be better suited as Black instead of Blue...Blue cutscene bars are just...what? That, or resize the image and crop the sides so it fills the screen.

The slider at 3:01:33...make it just a regular hitcircle? The tail hitting sound is out of place in the song. I tried it with a hitcircle and if you ask me, it sounds better that way. (And it happens again at 3:58:93).

Watch the beat-spacing where the combo comes in at 4:19:53/ You might want to pull it off of the slider, as it presents an inconsistancy as it is. The combo that starts at 4:21:33 does this the way it should be done.

Apart from that, it's great. Whenever I can simply list the iffy things about a map, you know it's practically ready for ranking. Just a wee bit of last-second polishing.

tbqh this song feels complete without any other difficulties, but that might just be me =|

A very extensive critique, thank you very much. The slider thing is up to opinion, but I thought you had a point so I just rolled with it and changed it. You were right about 4:19:53 - that was a mistake, and it has been rectified.

I think it's about as good as it's going to get now.

One last thing.

Did you accidentally miss a note at 3:51:13? Check that out, please...it looks like you deviated from the pattern just that once and it was probably unintentional.

So I did. Fixed, thanks for noticing.

Then I say it's ranked.

Hard mode is ranked in my eyes, at least. I can't remember whether I did a final of Normal or not so I'll have to run over that after work if nobody ranks it by then.
Rolled
Consider yourself ranked, my friend.
Phrygian
Ummm, where'd the background go? =O

Oh, and personally, I REALLY liked the opening guitar bit as it originally was... oh well. It's still good though.

I replaced it with a new one right before it got ranked.

Does it not show up or something?
Phrygian
Oh, I just had to redownload the map. It's back now.
awp
okay it disappeared for me as well

I probably have to also redownload it.

Is this the song that plays during the highschool festival episode? I'm wondering if a video might be able to accompany it.

Yes it is, and I considered adding the video before. In the end I did not basically for two reasons...

1. I do not have a RAW of the episode in question, and even if I did I lack the software and expertise to extract the relevant clip.

and

2. I think that adding video is unnecessary and bloats the file size.

If there's enough demand for it though, I may reconsider.
awp
I'd like to offer assistance in cropping and compressing the video (could easily get it under 10 megs with excellent quality) alas, once again, that was one of the shows that is contained in my missing CD wallet.

Maybe I should do the unthinkable and visit my family - my old man's birthday's coming up.

Aw heck why not. Let's do this.

I found a working torrent for the RAW:
http://tokyotosho.com/details.php?id=29388

It's a batch, so deselect all the other episodes and just grab #12.

It would be easiest if you could torrent the episode yourself, but if that's not possible I'll download it and upload it onto sendspace or something.
awp
I can. I already did that last for a beatmap I'm working on (again, I HAVE the episode to that too, but it's in this enigmatic CD wallet that randomly disappeared from my parents' house along with my 2gig usb drive and microcard reader)

Last time it only took about 2 hours to download tops, so by tomorrow I should have the video encoded and timed.

However, would this affect the scores at all? I recall one of two things...don't know which is true:

-scores reset if the number/layout of hitobjects changes
-scores reset if the .osu changes

I'm hoping it's the former so no scores get scrapped. We would not want to lose our beautiful high scores, even if it's only been open for a couple nights.

I believe it's the former, but if it's not I'm sure we can work something out with Peppy.

Also it's worth noting that the show uses an abbreviated version of the song - so if, during the editing process, you think you can copy and paste the sections that repeat, that would be awesome and probably make the song and video end at the same time.

Thanks for your help!
awp
My pleasure. It was one of the defining moments of the show for me.

(One of the best moments in the show was the Phoenix Wright tribute to be honest, that was fucking brilliant.)
pokedigi
Congratulation!

As long as the actual scoring part doesn't change, all is good. Just give me a yell when you are ready to update it and I will temporarily unrank it.

3 minutes until download is complete so hopefully within the next couple hours I'll have it all tacked together.

And thanks Peppy, we'll let you know.

Wow I do not have the RAM to do something like this I really need another gig

that is not going to stop me, however, it's going to take longer than I expected. The video's only about 2:15 so like you said I'll have to separate sections and slap it together.

EDIT:

OH MY GAWD DIVX WHY WON'T YOU JUST FUCKING STAY OPEN STOP OPENING AND CLOSING EVERY TIME I PREVIEW A TWO SECOND SAMPLE either there is an option to make the load time less painful or this software's pretty dumb I might actually have better luck with fucking wmm

EDIT EDIT: Damn it the video and audio were actually recorded at different frame rates and will fall out of sync after longer periods

normally I could just edit the framerate for this selected clip but the program is being gay and locking the preview window up when I so this so I do not know if it will sync correctly gawd this software is so poorly put together

EDIT EDIT EDIT: So the first minute and a half is timed pretty perfectly and the crowd has gotten into it which is good because if I don't know how to time a section that wasn't animated I can now just jump between crowd cheering and guitar playing and no vocal matching is necessary awesome

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT: Oh my gawd does this ever require an immense amount of patience every time I click the mouse I have to wait at least 5 seconds before I can do anything to let the program catch up holy shit I have been at this for the last three hours, have I? Well, the first 3:30 of the video has been assembled and with that I'll finish the last 1:15 later I gotta go do stuff man this is irritatingly designed @_@

DivX/FFDShow have opened and closed themselves more than 200 times since I started this program the user stack can't be too happy about that.

Note to self: at around 2:20 there's about 5 to 10 seconds of footage that needs to be replaced.

Heh, sounds intense. I wish there were something I could do besides watch and wait.

I think it's done. It's currently exporting, then I'll have to review it, but I'm relatively certain it is done. I synced the video with the audio file in the .osz so you shouldn't need to do anything to the .osu files other than attching the movie. I'll edit this post with an upload link when it's done.

(I'll have to export it twice - the first is just a syncronization check, the second time I'll delete the audio to reduce filesize).

Here's the download link a la high quality video (35mb)
