i think what peppy is trying to do is;

--> You get X points by a top rank(map rank), calculated by the players rank behind you (in that map rank)

For example, a beatmap that with top 5# Silvia, 4# white wolf if you get 2# you get a lot of "???" points.

So if you pass higher rank players in beatmaps, you get a lot of points. (Ofc this is hard to do lol)
Its like getting our averange map rank. but competing with others.



Why top rank players in Difficulty Easy and normal have so much "???" points?

they get a lot of points cuz they are above Good rankings players! Example: They are above osuplayer111 that play easy's and normal's for Acc only. Or any other player that do it for fun or to pratice when was neewbie.

This is just my theory after all! xD

I don't know about that theory about it being some ratio of how many good players you outrank. I had no ??? score this morning, and then I got some relatively average scores on something like five maps, and all of a sudden I have 56 ???. I can't imagine what the hell it could mean... unless maybe it just takes a while for all the profiles to update with it somehow? I don't know.

Lol, this system is hilarious. I had 124 ??? earlier, and now I have 22 ???. There are a lot of theories out there, but I'm not going to put my full trust into them until some real word comes out about how the new ranking system works.

It's getting better now imho.
I see a very high percentage of High-Skilled players in the top100. WAY higher than in the current score-ladder.
Also ragelewa is #1 finnish!

It's not really sorted by skill, more by amount of ranks, but at least it accounts for the map difficulties a lot better now. If this is still getting improved I totally can't complain about this as a form of a rough skill measurement.

v this guy has a stupid amount with only 5pc though so there's obviously something wrong.. too bad we can't see his most played stats (or is it just me) so we know what gave him all the points

I guess "???" should be called "Skill Points" or "Ownage Points", since it somehow calculates on your skill level X length you've played (?).

My "???" at the time of this post:
osu! standard = 307 (frequent plays)
Taiko = 573 (stopped playing since last year)
CTB = 405 (also stopped since last year)

1_1_1 was a multi of HHKD btw that's a report from a !multi from like 2years ago and nothing was done about it.

If that is anything near remotely good then it still needs some work. Does seem more accurate than the current system though, looking at other players.

I mean this guy was just farming #1's on easy and normal and has a higher ??? than KRZY or Neruell?
Even at my example: there are people with a higher ??? that cant even pass a insane against me beeing able to mostly
pass every insane!

I came to a conclusion: a ranking for skill in osu is not possible! Jeah it fits mainly but it'll never reach 50% according to the
actual skill ranking (i gues everybody has a an idea of how it looks...)

I'll just suggest this to you guys: Every time your "???" thingy rises (wait what), tell us what have you done before that here. It might be helpful for us, y'know.

Maybe it's the amount of the beatmaps with the highest SD on a mapset we have cleared (to make it simple, clearing the hardest beatmap in a mapset, although this is not always the case here), but it might be not that too.

I know how ppy said he will never reveal the formula for this on #modhelp, but however this works, it seems like more reasonable ranking method.

but looking at ^'s example.. yeah, Normally, having tons of #1 on easy, normal doesnt mean you are good at osu.

but this is just problem of the "formula" that ppy said, and if he works more about this, I think we well be able to face more reasonable ranking method O.O..

It'd be good if this new ranking system was based also on %'s of fail/retry on every diff.
For example, the higher top place on the diff you have, the higher your score is.
But if you play Easy (~50% success rate), you'll get less points than if you play Insane with ~20% success rate.
This %'s could be easily included into calculations, I suppose.

If I may speculate as well. I think it measures how well your scores are compared to the difficulty of the songs. Anyways, it seems to me it's going the right way.

Soon they're going to remove mods or do something as stupid as that because there is no way things are going to start making sense any time soon. Hey I have a new idea, how about you make the beatmaps ranking AUTOMATED so EVERYONE will get their SHITTY maps ranked! None of this is hopefully going to happen, just thought of some really stupid stuff that I think a person like peppy might do. I hope to god that I'm not guessing right.

And if this ranking is really dependent of recent activity stuff, it would explain some very odd rankings.

Matchmaking is actually a good idea for those that wish to use Multi more often. This means people can get into rooms that are around their level, unlike going into one and suddenly finding out every single person can't beat a normal difficulty. It's not competitive, it's not for money, show, or anything like that...

The fact you over-reacted before you even took in time to realize "Hey, this might be an update for a community benefit" then you would of seen the big picture.

You're like every other person that sees a change and doesn't like it... You'll bitch about it and then end up using it in the future, if not, you'll bitch about it 24/7, come to hate the game because of ONE feature, that you DON'T HAVE TO USE, and get yourself banned for not shutting up in the first place.


I for one, welcome the matchmaking system. I just hope this will get the community more involved with Multi and will allow me to actually find a room suited best for my skill.

The score metrics are being changed, that's why the scores are so jumpy.

Heck, dont even guess that the score increased from activity or other things you did yourself, my score went from 900+ to 4000+ while I didn't do anything.

Start wondering about what the formula calculates AFTER it's been finetuned. Kriers should update his post to include a bunch of handy information so people don't just jump in here and ask about something that was answered 7 pages ago.

no idea about the matchmaking stuff so i didn't comment on that, so far this new ranking seems to stay true to what it claims to offer.

off topic:once this is done i do hope peppy starts focusing on multiplayer
removing the annoying bugs and perhaps adding new features or game modes
it's been mentioned in a feature request, but try to make multiplayer not just singleplayer with other people, tag coop was an awesome addition but i think it's time for more XD

I see, seems odd. If it gets to this point, why not just make a button that you can enable, to play against people with approx the same amount of ???, and disable you can play against whoever.

It's recalculating. Finetuning takes a lot of time and it's stated in the big block of text at the "playerranking2" page.

just some personal opinions

1) the new rank is fine and creative, but when it comes stable, players will find the way to increase it, like the old ranking.

2) if the calculation cant separate how "valuable" the different maps are, the result may not become exact.

3) i cant wait to compare the new rank to the video of "best 2012"

4) im quite curious what is the rank in mind when ppy calculating this new rank

5) whitewolf higher than cookiezi is reasonable. even everyone knows cookiezi is stronger than any human.
