Sengoku Koihime series has no battle game. There is only novel part. I think you are referring to Koihime Musou series. This has battle (strategy) part. And it is not difficult once you understand the system. If you are interested in battle game, you might as well play Koihime Musou. (https://vndb.org/v369)
Sengoku Koihime X is long, more than twice as long as a normal game. However, you can enjoy and learn about the history of Japan. I wish I had played it when I was studying Japanese history! I think you will enjoy it more if you research the actual history and understand the overlap and differences with the story.
The EX cover image on VNDB is different from the actual image because it is an image of the Complete Edition, which is a compilation of EX 1 through 3. The real cover image is different for each of EX1-3. (https://baseson.nexton-net.jp/senkoi-ex-comp/ It's hard to tell because it's in Japanese, but here you can see the package image for each.) EX1 is in the Tohoku region, EX2 is in the Echizen region, and EX3 is fighting the Mouri family. The characters in EX1 to EX3 change a little accordingly. Of course, the story will continue as in EX1 through EX3.

There is 3 series; Koihime Musou, Sengoku Koihime and Souten Koihime. All series are based on historical facts.
Koihime Musou is set Romance of the Three Kingdoms. (China, A.D.200)
Sengoku Koihime is set Japanese history called sengoku period. (Japan, A.D.1500)
Souten Koihime is set old chinese history. (China, B.C.200)
These series are independent.

https://vndb.org/v31820 This is extended story of Sengoku Koihime. To tell the truth, I didn't play EX 1,2 and 3. I only play Sengoku Koihime X. But I bought EX this opportunity and played a bit EX 3 without EX 1,2.
To come to the point, I thoght it can play without any other series. There is commentary on the difficult words.
But you won't know the worldview and relationships between the characters. So, I recomended Sengoku Koihime X (first syoty of this series). I think it's okay to skip EX 1 and 2.
