mapping serves two primary functions: 1. creating an experience for the player (maps are just game levels, they are designed to be played/experienced) 2. representation of a song (without a song, a map is merely an abstract collection of shapes. songs give context to maps, and maps build upon songs.) compromise between these functions is the basis of all mapping beyond a fundamental level. all aspects of a map should serve at least one of these functions. these do not matter as much on an object-by-object basis, but are important to a map's identity and meaning.
jumps are an important part of mapping. they can be utilized to represent a song in a way that other object arrangements are not as effective. usage of spacing changes, flow, axis, and patterning allows for emphasis to exist in an atypical fashion to normal maps. hyper spacing jumps and overmapping rhythm are effective tools in emphasis of a song's intensity. modern jump maps either serve as content bait/clip farm maps to gain attention, or are simply unfun. while there are mappers that avoid these tropes most of the time, most who attempt it suffer from a few key problems: - they are fundamentally bad (complete lack of correlation to the song) - they are not fun to play (excessive unintended acute angles, bad transitions between patterns, generally unfun patterns, sticking to one axis for too long with no reason) - they are simply not engaging (copy pasting patterns, overusage of certain patterns, poor song correlation/emphasis, etc.) these flaws show up in alot of high star rating jump maps, mostly because the mappers who do decide to make a jump spam map out of a normal song are usually completely new to mapping and therefore do not have the mapping experience to identify these kinds of issues. the ultimate flaw is that modern mapping devalues jumps, as other object arrangements elicit stronger reactions and deeper analysis than a group of circles. while this is inevitable, i think mappers should revisit the idea of the jump map as a unique form of expression, and the mappers who are pick better songs. my greatest wish is for jump maps to be liked for more than their potential worth to a player.
