classicosu!

Hello.

So I would like to start a rather big project here involving the introduction of classical music to osu! It may appear at first that classical music is not so well suited to such a rhythm game, but I think it can be done and with great grace! Perhaps the greatest issues to address are:

  • Lack of modern standard beat.
Difficult to time properly due to rubato and tempo changes.
    Copyright.
    Duration length.
Choosing from an enormous library of music.
I think that we can solve all of these by the following:

  • Be smart and extra thoughtful about hit sounds.
Spend some quality time in timing.
Use the free material provided by the Petrucci Library.
Don't use copyright music. Here is United States law for reference. I don't know how it is elsewhere.
Use abridgments or just pick short pieces.
    Choose from the following list.
Of course, the repertoire of classical music is absolutely extensive, but I'd like to narrow it down to a couple or more pieces to start.
Here's a couple of ideas off the top of my head with more to come:

  • Beethoven - Symphony No.9, IV. "Ode to Joy"
Dvořák - Symphony No.9, "From the New World," IV. Allegro con fuoco
Mazart - "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" from Die Zauberflöte
Mozart - Twelve Variations on "Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman"
Rachmaninoff - Symphony No.2, III. Adagio ma non troppo
Stravinsky - Firebird Suite (either version), "Infernal Dance"
Stravinsky - Rite of Spring (obvious first choice for a rhythm game)
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.6, "Pathétique," I. Adagio – Allegro non troppo
Eventually, I would like to partition this list off into time period, nationality, style, or something or other.

Also, I would like to have a banner for this. Would anyone like to do this? I would be very grateful.

Here's what I am talking about:

Nice idea. I only see a few around now. I'm very familiar with IMSLP, but not with osu - I just started the game.

Definitely, classical music will be more difficult than modern music due to the concerns you mentioned, but there are plenty of free recordings available on IMSLP and other places for this use.

So I guess I'll join in when I get more familiar with osu. But for now I can make a (temporary) banner.

Thanks. And welcome to osu! I hope you enjoy your stay here!

Yes, please. That would be nice, thank you.

Also, I just got a USB turntable for Christmas, so now I can digitize all the records that I got from my grandparents this summer. Also, I need to figure out how to digitize all the cassette tapes they also gave me. And of course I've got plenty of CD's. So maybe I can upload some of those, and we can use them. I'll just need to ask permission for their use here.

And I really do want to make this project a reality. I don't want this to end up in the dump like most others, so no stopping or looking back now!

I'm not the best or most experienced mapper in the world, but I would love to help with this project, as I also feel that the classical(AKA best) genre is very underused. Also, would this be a compilation of songs? Because if so, I would like to do the Firebird section. PM me

Hello IntelliTroodon,

Nah, I wasn't planning on doing a collab, sorry. I just wanted to introduce osu! to classical music is all. But if you would to do a collab, that would also be wonderful!

As for firebird, I checked imslp, and they don't have a recording. I don't think that I have any records either, but I will check. I just bought about 100 records, all classical music, from the flea market today for 45 USD, haha. I know I did see a Rite of Spring in there, though...

And the list I made was just something off the top of my head. Just something to get started with. Of course, the idea is to introduce a whole new category (like with anime, video game, novelty, etc.), except classical. It is a massive project, I know, so I just wanted to start with a little something to get things rolling, which is what the Dvorak map was for, to maybe get a couple of people pumped to start mapping.

Also, you're more than welcome to contribute anything to the project if you can/want! The main problem, though, is that I am rather busy right now with a heavy load of maths classes at university, so the project is going to be very slow to start...

If you have any requests for compositions, I can search through what I have and give you some recordings. I'll even try to time it for you.

The picture is of Beethoven by Stieler, from wikipedia.

edit: I added this to my sig so there's only a link to it in the forumpost. if you don't know how to use a banner, simply go to settings, edit signature, and inside put the following:

Yeah, sorry I've been a bit inactive lately.

Thanks a bunch for the banner, Kapurai!

Also, yes thereverent and Mwalls Ho. Having mania mappers for classicosu! would be great.

Also, I found a Rite of Spring recording pre-1972. Unfortunately, we can't really use it, because the quality went kaboom right at the beginning of the section I was hoping to map. I'll need to look for a better recording then.

I think it would also be pretty cool if we featured some living classical-style composers, such as Samuel Hazo(who I got to meet because he led my 9th grade honor band, which was awesome). Some songs that he has done are at http://www.samuelrhazo.com/. An important one not on the site is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0gVf7cLoaU and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhrOde0qT78 (and everything else he's wrote, jeez), which I kinda wanted to do sometime in the near future :P

Also, I found a great playlist of mostly modern age classical band/orchestral music: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8916F4493D498202

No problem ;)

I'm guessing that regarding the legal part, most osu songs aren't doing that, but there's plenty of recordings on IMSLP under Creative Commons licenses. Of these, we can probably use any that doesn't have NoDerivatives, unless someone makes money off of osu beatmaps.

Hey guys, just so you know, I created dajagl actually as a second account. I confessed to the staff, and they disabled it, so now I am back to this account. Just so you realize that it is still me...

Anyway, I don't know if I am really seriously going to continue this project or put it on hold for a while. Of course, I still want to introduce osu! to classical music, but it will just take time. Sorry guys. :(

I suppose I will go ahead and upload that Dvorak map then. Maybe then this will get noticed more and inspire some people.

In case you need someone to edit the OP, feel free to contact me.

We should pick one song as a group and work on it as a collab mapset. I can start the project after I get further in my attempts to get https://osu.ppy.sh/s/286544 ranked(just finishing Futsuu, getting easy modded, refining normal, and waiting for gds to get done). Suggestions?

If this project's still going on then I'd like to join. So if one of you has an mp3 and feels like mapping message me for the timing :)

I'm not sure about mapping - I'm not very good at playing osu myself, but this piece would be wonderful... (The opening aria from Bach's cantata "Ich habe genug")
http://imslp.org/wiki/Ich_habe_genug,_B ... bastian%29
There's an mp3 file for download on that page. There's also tons of mp3 files around imslp. Not all pages of music have mp3 files though, and some recordings are of poor quality. But many famous pieces have recordings. (e.g. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Mozart's 40th symphony, sinfonia concertante for violin and viola...)

EDIT: There are actually *some* classical maps already available... most need to be ranked though. I don't want to list them right now, but a page for listing them would be nice.

EDIT 2: Maybe Bach isn't such a great idea for osu. This one might be better:
http://traffic.libsyn.com/gardnermuseum ... t_op72.mp3 - Liszt's transcription of Schubert's song "Auf dem Wasser zu singen."
It has some more intense parts, but involves a lot of rubato...
