Any plan to use Opus (http://www.opus-codec.org/) instead of mp3?
Better quality at lower bitrate.

Edit:
Of course without dropping mp3 support.

.........How does that have anything to do with Technical Help.....
Could a GMT/Support team either move this to another board or mark this invalid

this should be in 4
*why You want to use opus anyway? I haven't heard about it until now

MP3 is like the most common encoding format around. If peppy does decide to implement this, it'd be better if it were to use BOTH Opus and MP3 instead of just replacing MP3 completely.
MP3's also almost always readily available.
This is the first I've heard of Opus as well.. Someone move this to feature requests/discussion perhaps?

i highly doubt peppy would remove mp3 support for beatmapping. he may to willing to add support for another file format though

The purpose here is just to save space. At 96KB/s you are near of trasparency. Beatmap packs would be a lot smaller.
Actually with mp3 you are nice at 192KB/s, or higher.

If you don't know what is it, just read about it.

Youtube is going to use it with vp9 on the next webm release. Skype is using it, and a lot incoming.

Well, cool if osu convert mp3 that you still have to opus for you.

Celzon wrote:

MP3 is obsolete. You need a really high bitrate to get trasparency/good sound.

It's not a commercial codec, that's why.

if anybody wants to test various codecs http://hpr.dogphilosophy.net/test/

Not worth for the purpose.

I'm going to give you some samples.

Beatmap 12191. 320kbps to 96kpbs. 7MB to 2MB.

Samples for quality test:
http://speedy.sh/uXVcp/Nightcore-VII-Jump-Jump.zip

You can play opus with vlc.

Here another.
192kbps mp3 vs 96 kbps opus.
http://speedy.sh/mrTPN/Grimes-Crystal-Ball.zip

128kbps would be a good bitrate too, if you want to overkill mp3. it's time to save bandwidth.
If you don't have a good sound system probably 64kbps is good enough.

Feel free to add me on Skype if you want to go deeper about opus.
TakuMii
It looks like Opus can be contained by OGG files (which osu! already supports), so I don't see why not. There's nothing justifying the removal of mp3 support though.

You seem a little too obsessed with this audio format. Why are you trying so hard to sell us this new format?

I'm just trying to give reasons. :)

You save space on your disk. You save bandwidth. You have a better quality. It's just that using mp3 does not make sense for me.

Btw, yes, it use ogg as container. But instead of the usually Vorbis you have Opus.

I'm interested into free standards. Opus is the free lossless audio codec of our days. Mp3 is just meh.

It's not just a point of view. You have a reasonable chance to help osu to get better.

It needs some love. They don't have money to ads their good stuff. There is no big company behind that can get something if you use it. :P

this is starting to sound like an informercial
TakuMii
Opus isn't lossless... and the reason why mp3 is still being used is because it is a universal standard. I'm willing to bet you that a lot of people will get angry if mp3 support, regardless of whatever's replacing it.

I don't get your point, actually. It's a feature request, you need to explain why you want something. That's all. :P
My first messaage was really short. I thought you were going to get info yourself.
I started to say stuff, and post samples when no one cared.

I'm not sure why users should care about codecs. It's something related with who make beatmaps.
I would add that Opus is a real standard, mp3 it's something different. There is no point to explain why mp3 is bad, 'couse Opus is just better in a tech point of view. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mp3#Licen ... ent_issues

Btw i don't get why you started with "Opus isn't lossless"....? Osu does not need a lossless codec. Actually mp3 is lossless and really bad at doing it.
What you care is to obatain "trasparency", here come Opus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transpare ... ression%29

If Osu support 'ogg', it should support Opus. That's another point.

I'm not really interested into. I don't play Osu a lot. It was just an idea for the community.
I think someone have a really big database, mp3 is huge. Plus, all the download that that site get. Everyone is wasting money.

If you have some data to calculate on what would be the difference, maybe you'll how much is a good idea to use it.

No. MP3 isn't lossless. Try to listen to an mp3 and then to a FLAC (with good earphones), it won't be the same.
Dexus
If it supports ogg wouldn't it support opus? Same with mp4 support and webm vp9 (which I'm curious about if it's supported or not)

Ye sorry. It's 'couse someone said "loseless" randomdly, i meant lossy. Probably if you read the all sentence you get that missword.

But about trying to get the difference. Try to hear the difference Opus vs FLAC. It's really harder.
Opus is just the state of the art of audio codec.

Container != Codec

Well, i don't think vp9 is supported, and it should not atm.
At the contrary Opus is stable and standard. It's just weird that Osu! does not support it.

The only reason to stick with mp3 is that everyone use it.. Btw it was just an idea. If the community is not interested it's ok. ;)

Unlike mp3 (which is a container that can only hold the mp3 codec), Ogg can hold various codecs. The most widespread one for it is Vorbis though (which is somewhat inferior to mp3, but is still supported EDIT: welp, wrong information).

:( Vorbis beat mp3 for a lot of reasons. But you're not going to use it 'couse you don't get a really high bitrate/quality difference. (at low bitrate mp3 sucks, anyway)
Also, Vorbis is obosleted by Opus too. ;)

The people in charge of ranking maps don't even know how to check for upscales. Why would we add another format that people will just transcode to for no reason? The size difference for transparency is negligible, and a properly encoded mp3 (read: from a lossless source) will sound just fine at 192. This is a rhythm game, where the primary objective is to have an audio track that is fine for clicking circles to. Also, 192kbps limit on mp3s is not just for reducing server load and space. There are other reasons.

The problem audio files are the ones people rip from streaming sites, which are destined to sound garbage from the start. Your lust for fidelity in a hipster codec would be better spent trying to convince people to use vpX, because you don't need $300 hardware to discern a large difference in a video format.
Derekku
.ogg is no longer supported, so there's no chance of this happening, sorry.
