Back Button Issues

Hi, I've been having a problem trying to skin the back button. I have a 460x200 image of nyan cat (12 frames) and I wanted to try using the mode-small element to skin the background of the back button to avoid the awkward glow that breaks continuity as was done in the skin Iridescence (https://youtu.be/zC_9AEhfM4g?t=76) like this.
It works in their skin, but when I try it makes the back button very glowy and bright. It looks like the mode small element is on top of the back button element, but this doesnt seem to happen with Iridescence. I have no idea why this is happening and would be grateful for any ideas on how to fix this.

The mode-[]-small elements are indeed above the back button. Iridescence has a cutout in the mode-small to make room for the back button. That trick probably doesn't work if you have a non-static back button.
