M4M, as this is your first beatmap and it does not yet have many mods, mod will probably be more general.
[
General]
- You do not need
Super Mario 3D Land in tags, they are already searchable as they are in source, please remove it.
k- Unify the audio lead-in for Ghostly & Horror please. Also please use atleast 1500 audio lead-in, I prefer 2000 in both diff. Frightening is fine since the first note is at 00:01:501 plus the 500 audio lead-in equals 2000ms till first note. But those two diffs above, it begins almost immediately which is a little too fast for my taste.
Done- Tags need to be unify, your are missing the
galaxy tags in Horror, please add it.
Changed tags for all diffs- While it isn't really unrankable to have multiple mp3 files in a beatmap. Is there any reason why you want to have two song files? I thought it may be because you want to map an Insane, and since the song is a bit calm or so, you can't really do it so you took a different arrange which allows this. However, since the diff with the different mp3 is Hard, I really do not understand why you did this. You don't need to explain this to me, but be sure to have a good reason for the MAT/BAT who'll look at this.
I... have reasons :>- For Frightening & Horror. please use a silent slider-slide. Take this one
http://puu.sh/1Y6e3 if you do not know where to find it. Be sure to set the timing points to s:c1.
Done- Since the names of the diff doesn't really say which diff is what diff. I recommend adding in creator word, which diff is Easy, which diff is Normal, which diff is Hard, etc.
k- peppy added a new slider shape algorithm sometimes ago. It should make it much easier to make perfect sliders. If you remove all the point from your sliders except for one, e.g. like this
http://puu.sh/1Y6p8 You'll see that the sliders automatically adjust to a perfect curve when you move the slider points. It doesn't do this when you have more than 3 points on your slider or red point (this is done so that people who prefer the older algorithm can still use it if they wish).
For some reason I used it in some diffs, will work on other sliders sometime later.- Timing seem off to me. Listen to 00:08:759 (1) - in Frightening for example, atleast 20ms off to me. I'm not great with timing so if you are unsure, try this thread
t/13795 Well, I thought something was wrong here when I heard that Ghostly Galaxy's off-set was a bit wrong.[
Frightening]
- I recommend circle size 3 if this diff is an Easy. All new ranked map I've ever seen with Easy are mapped in circle size 3. While you do not have to follow this, I don't think you did this on purpose and since you are still a newbie mapper, I recommend following the norm.
I actually did this on purpose, I don't really count this map as an Easy diff.- Some tips to make a better looking beatmap. Don't let any notes overlap each other. In this case, with the slider velocity and spacing you use, do not do any 1/2 rhythms like 00:22:549 (3,4,5,1) - Instead, make use of sliders. This is just a general tip, there are exception, but for this song, I believe keeping every 1/1 or longer apart is best here.
Time to do something in the next few days- Also make use of long slider to give a bit more flow to your beatmap. Your hit circle follow the song, but there is a large pause between each hit circle / slider. It makes it hard to feel the song. It's really hard to explain this as it come natural to me, but let's just say the beginning. 00:06:340. Try a rhythm like this
http://puu.sh/1Y6N5. Notice how I leave a pause at 00:08:275? By doing this, you accent the hit circle on 00:07:791. Notice I don't do the same thing at 00:10:695 since music change here. I represent this by doing a 1/2 repeating slider instead. Also, if you did not put the silent slider-slide yet, you'll see that this sound, sounds quite horrible for these parts. I think this is the reason why you didn't use sliders here? Try to avoid using too many 2/1 (2 white ticks until next note) unless you are mapping a really fast song or song is just really calm at those part. Or for accenting, like the example I gave you. For Easy espcially, try to map with hitsounding in mind, if you can do a good and consistent hitsounding pattern, then it means you did a good rhythm.
And more to do :>- While playing, I notice some spacing error. It's generally not serious, but I do not recommend trying to play with distant snap in Easy/Normal until you are more experienced. It's much easier to just focus on pattern then thinking about spacing for those diffs.
I'll see what I'll do00:01:501 (1,2) - I notice you didn't use the copy and paste function here. I recommend adjusting one of the slider, make it perfect, copy it, then flip it horizontally and use it for the next. Your beatmap will looks much more polished this way. Keep in mind doing this doesn't mean symmetrical mapping, this is simply to give a bit of order to your map. Having a bunch of random shape, or having a bunch of fixed, polished pattern. I believe having a bunch of nice looking polished pattern is better than random stuff.
Done00:26:179 (4,5) - Just a note, I expected the slider to start where (4) is, not at current spot. If you want to follow the other sound, then it should start on 00:26:904, but this cause unappealing slider ticks.
Changed00:29:082 (1) - This is a case where mapping in 1.0x is beneficial.
http://puu.sh/1Y78g. I change circle size 3, but the message here should be clear. Mapping in higher distant snap, especially in easier diff allows for more aesthetically pleasing pattern and allows you to spread the notes around more. This is why I always recommend 1.0x-1.2x distant snap in Easy/Normal.
Done00:34:888 (1,2,3) - Try to think of a pattern, looking at this, I feel the notes doesn't really form a pattern at all while compare to something like this
http://puu.sh/1Y7lJ. Try to think of some simple pattern like a circle
http://puu.sh/1Y7nC etc. It may not be unique, but you need a basis then you can work from there.
It makes a curved triangle and I will keep this one :<01:05:372 (2,3) - You could have avoid this overlap with 1.0x
done- Also a simple hitsound pattern is like this, 00:05:856, 00:06:340, 00:07:308, whistle on those spot and repeat.
Overall, the first thing you need to work on is rhythm, I try my best to give some examples of what you can do. While working on rhythm, make sure to think about hitsounding. a good tip is to just placing some whistle and see what sound good. Since the same rhythm repeats several time, the hitsound pattern that I gave you should work. Clap and finish doesn't fit this song so not much you can do with them. You can look for a custom clap sound if you wish and add it on the 2nd and 4th white tick, but any sort of finish and clap use is free styling here. After you are happy with rhythm, make sure every single pattern follow some sort of shape or logic. A circle, 3 hit circle up, 3 hit circle down, etc. Then, if you want to do something unique, you can try doing some sort of interesting slider shapes (slider art) with the longer sliders. Some important function to note. copy & paste, flip horizontally, flip vertically, rotate, reverse selection. Make use of them.
Will do something here[
Ghostly]
- Quite high od for a Normal if this is a Normal. I recommend -1 overall difficulty.
I also don't really count this to Normal, more like Hard Normal :>01:17:035 (3) - Please do this
http://puu.sh/1Y7IS doneBetter than Easy, but what I mention for Easy applies here. Remember that for this diff, 1/2 is fine. This diff suffer from mainly doing hit circle on place without any real sound. E.g. 00:44:374 (3,4) - Please take a look at them.
sure[
Horror]
00:07:308 (4,5,6) - This is quite a weird way to place a stream.
Maybe I'll change something here in the future, but not now00:18:920 (5) - Whistle should be at begin, not end.
Changed this, for now00:29:082 (1) - Add new combo.
Don't really see this point of this but ok01:03:920 (1) - Stack this with (9).
done01:18:558 (4,5,6) - The music here is in 1/6.
Keeping this as it is, sounds more like an echo to me.Same problem as Normal, like what exactly is the begin of this slider 00:19:162 (6) - following? I don't really feel like I'm playing the song because of this.
I'll see what I'll doHowever, the rhythm here 00:52:308 - 01:03:679 is quite good here and the pattern isn't too bad.
Yay finally somebody said something GOOD and didn't just point out everything bad (aka 85% of the map) : DI didn't give too many suggestions because the first thing that need to be rework is the rhythm. Make sure stuff like 00:19:162 (6) - in Horror doesn't happen. Frightening need a major rework on the pattern. The other diffs isn't too bad if you can improve the rhythm. Then lastly, hitsound, follow the melody with whistle. This is what works best for this song.
It's been so long since I modded a newbie mapper's map so I sort of forgot what I normally need to mention, but I hope you can make good use of the general suggestions I gave you. In this state, it'll take a lot of mods to get it to a reasonable quality unfortunately unless some modders is willing to hold your hand and work on everything with you.
Good luck, all I can say is keep working on it, don't wait for mods to mention the issues.
Thanks for this mod, surely it will help me a lot improving and I hope that I don't need too many people modding this after I updated all diffs completely.
