Would you like to give osu!stream mapping a shot?

No mapping for me, but I'd play other people's maps and help mod them!

osu!stream is chugging along smoothly, but there is one huge bottleneck currently: mapping. We have a lot of music and no maps to go with it. This is partly due to the increased amount of effort that is required to make a polished map, but it is also due to the small size of the mapping team, and lack of quality mapping and modding.

I have been pondering on the idea of making mapping completely open, which would mean the following:

  1. A large collection of music will be made available for your selection.
  2. Anyone is welcome to take their shot at a map.
  3. If your map is perfect, it will be used. If it shows potential, we can mod it in the right direction.
There will be some conditions in place:

  1. I have the final say in which maps/mappers produce the quality required.
  2. osu!stream has much more stringent rules and guidelines than osu!. You can get an idea for this by reading the tutorials available here
  3. Mappers which have maps used for final distribution will be reimbursed to the best of my ability (though I highly encourage you not to map just because of this).
  4. If anyone out there is actually interested in helping with the modding process, I would be overjoyed and try and reimburse this where possible, too.
What you will need to get started:

  1. A supporter tag; the test build is required for osu!stream features. If you produce a map that is more than half-assed I will be more than happy to reimburse this.
  2. You don't need an iOS device. Maps can be tested with a correctly calibrated PC monitor (just wash your hands first ;)).
  3. Experience in osu! mapping. Experience in logically spacing and avoiding overlaps.
  4. A positive and flexible attitude.
With all that in mind, I want to get an idea of how many of your are interested in this. Please also let your friends know about this thread if you think they may be interested too.

If you have any questions/comments feel free to reply here :).

I'd really love to give this a go myself. My osu! maps (generally, especially my submitted ones) wouldn't work well for osu!stream but I do have a good idea on how it works just by people talking about it and actually seeing the maps.

With that being said, I hope you go through with this and I will be checking back regularly.

Would love to gain some experience. I had stream dled on my iPod Touch, but the last time I've seen it was months ago, so this may as well be a new start.
Additionally, part of my modding focuses strictly on strict spacing, which is more appropriate for stream.

Why not, why not. I've been considering mapping for osu!stream for a while, but never got serious about it due to various problems, which got fixed lately.
I am guilty of using overlaps every so often. Nevertheless, it's only for osu! standard maps. I have a clear idea of what would work for an o!stream map, since I could play and FC them all up (the free ones at least) until this point.
I'll keep this thread in the back of my head.

The only setback is that I have little to no experience with the test build editor, especially when it comes to hitsounds. I hope I can get someone to give me a quick little rundown.

The hitsound tutorial should start you off decently, but hit me up if you want specific ideas. The main thing is to remember that drum hitsounds exist--first attempts tend to have long sections of normals and long sections of softs and everything sounds drab. That's just because it's what people are used to.

Really, by playing a DS game and osu!stream, it should become apparent what feels good where.

Hmm, I'd be quite interested in this, but I only have an Android device at the moment (I know I don't need an iOS device, but I'd rather have the ability to test maps hands on :p). From my understanding, I guess there is some sort of coding-related issue holding up the Android beta.
Jinxy
My style (or lack thereof) and the extended rules would make it pretty hard for me to map for o!s in my current state, but I am interested in helping to mod. I can get better acquainted with the rules this way, too.
Ekaru
I'd be more than happy to help mod. Not map, though.

wooow i don't have iOS but i really wanna try to mapping
also I still don't get it what mean this part:

I think it means "you don't have to have an iOS device (currently the only devices capable of playing osu!stream are iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch) in order to create and test beatmaps, but you can simulate the touchscreen experience and judge timings by actually putting your fingers on your screen (and leaving behind whatever is on your fingers, on the screen, thus the wash hands note)"
Ekaru
If you use a CRT monitor, I recommend curling your fingers so you can use the flat of your finger nails. Similar experience, but your fingers won't cry when you do sliders.

Full-on finger action's best when it's not painful, though.

Edit: I recommend curling just for sliders for the most authentic experience possible.
MMzz
I'd give it a try.

I never really overlap notes, and i try to focus on style and flow in maps. Depends on the songs that are available to us though.
Azure_Kite
I'd be more than willing to mod and try my hand at mappng for osu!Stream

EDIT: Why is there no option in the poll for both Modding and Mapping? D:
RusselG
Sounds cool, would definitely try modding.

Yeah, the idea is that, even by pretending, one can still judge how easy it is to anticipate objects. It also checks for hand/thumb overlaps, which are to be avoided at all costs.

Just a thought.

It takes one play-through to determine if a map has potential. I am willing to exert this amount of time for the possibility of it being good.
OnosakiHito
Mapping osu stream? This is great. I will looking forward to this.
arien666
Why not :3

BTW, I wonder if there's no discrimination between MAT(BAT or whatever) and non-MAT for nomination of mappers :3
I hope discrimination would not exist for this ;___;
zeroclover
first, i want to look list of song
or people can choose random song on it?

I'd love to make maps for this as well, although I'll have to wait until my account gets migrated.

The thing is that, assuming that the average map lasts for two or three minutes, just one set will take around ten minutes just to play; let alone, play again for a second impression. Just six maps will take an hour out of one's day and if they're all poor, then that can only be discouraging.

Despite that, I'm all for this--I'm just worried that people will be put off in case the worst case scenario does happen. I guess that what I'm trying to say is that I dearly hope that those who check the maps will be able to persist and that those who map will be able to follow the rules and tutorials to the letter. Please, mappers: give it everything you have.
lolcubes
Could give it a shot I suppose. The main thing that kept me from actually trying it is the lack of an iOS device but I guess if that's not necessary I'm all green.
pieguyn
I guess I could try it, if I find a song I like... though, I'll have to watch out to avoid overlaps :P

Our map packaging tool will automatically point out any overlaps in your map.

If you catch me or one of the other active mappers in chat, feel free to ask us questions.

to be honest, a good mapping system need enough mappers and more communications. The success of current osu! mapping is based on that, based on hundreds of mappers, modders and a huge amount of experiments & moddings. Stream mapping is completely different from osu!, so we cannot use the experiences in standard, but develop a new mapping style of stream. To attract more mappers to join this area and provide a suitable platform for them, not to refuse them.
Azure_Kite
Isn't this exactly what's happening? Just saying.
D33d
Those who are clearly capable are accepted. Because osu!stream is a business venture, it can not be treated as lightly as osu!

People can get away with all kinds of things here, and it's possible to get a map ranked that "just works." For osu!stream to appeal as much as possible, maps need more than that. They need to be excellent and the mappers need to be very competent and diligent in order to get anywhere. There's no point in concentrating efforts on every Tom, Dick and Harry if they wouldn't be able to get anywhere with this.

That isn't supposed to sound harsh--osu!stream is simply not the same as osu! Through this, everybody will be given a chance to prove themselves, but they will face more limitations than they would on this site.

Our plan was always to accept tons of people to map. It just sort of stalled. :P

yes it's completely different, that's why we need more communications, or mods, or something else, because nobody know what is "excellent" in stream. A good osu! mapper may hard to adapt the style of stream, and only players can say which map is good, not mappers selves.

not to you, but to all mappers, although confidence is fine, arrogant is a dangerous signal for a mapper if there're only other mappers/modders to praise him but no player accepts. What i worried about is stream may fall into such a situation. anyway, I may exaggerate the situation, but i suppose it's better to avoid that at beginning.

mm201 wrote:

i suppose there could be a forum for all stream players and mappers like here :)
CNM501
It's good to know osu!stream actually has music waiting to be mapped. I have almost all the packs available and want more XD. I'd love to help but I have no experience in mapping whatsoever, so good luck to those mappers! ^^ Can't wait to play the new maps :D
SuperMIC
Erm, as discussed in modhelp, I'd like to apply...

No, I do not have any ranked maps, but you can ask people, I can map well. I have TONS AND TONS of free time, if you wanted me to spend 12 hours a day mapping I probably would be able to. I'm extremely flexible with regards to my personality, I'll accept any mods wholly, and I think (hope!) I'm really easy to work with.

Also, I have a lot of experience with osu!stream. I have top ranks on quite a few Stream maps, and I know what the ranking rules are and what should and should not be used in a map. I know the standard of quality which would be expected of me, and if I'm accepted, I'd keep the standard.

So yeah... I hope you take me into consideration! Thanks. :3

I've just been too busy to look at this let, but I haven't dropped the idea.
LKs
for some reasons I have tried to make about 3 osu stream-ish(stream style) maps. I'd like to do my bit if needed but I don't have plenty of time currently so I may be only able to accept relatively short songs
those
What songs are we able to choose from to map?
Dakeyrus
For those of you who know me, skip through this part. For those who don't I wanted to just give a brief history. I joined the osu! community while it was in it's infancy (relatively speaking) and fell in love with the game. Since joining a took a few stabs at mapping, modded a little, and started to meet some new and interesting people. As I gained experience I ended up getting to know the modders and development team fairly well. Eventually I was added to the BAT team and spent a good chunk of time voluntarily modding and mapping to contribute to a community I loved. Real life got in the way from time to time, until I found I had little time to contribute anymore and just logged in from time to time to play.

After a lengthy(ish) conversation with peppy, and with my life being full of free time again, I have offered to step in to help manage the community for osu!stream and push to get maps finished, polished, and ready for release in a timely manner. It's going to take a lot of work, but that's why I'm here.

The Goal:

Simply put, we'd like to see 1-2 map packs released per month. We currently have a ton of music and no maps to go with them. Failures on deadlines, lack of time due to real life, many factors. The goal is to shift things into a constant forward momentum and keep it that way.

The Plan:

Eventually, I'd like to have two internal schedules. One for when the maps need to be ready for modding, and another for when we aim to have it ready for release. I'd like to take that and get ahead of the game a little, have 2-3 packs in advance so we're always a step ahead. After those two schedules are set, we'll aim to hit those targets as punctually as possible and do a public release schedule from there.

Now as far as mapping goes, I'm seriously considering opening the opportunity up to anyone who's interested and has produced ranked maps for the pc version of the game. With this, there will be no calling dibs on music. We'll allow anyone to make any map from the music available, and as long as they meet the deadline for when a map must be ready for modding, they'll have their map modded and can make the necessary changes before the deadline for ready-for-release. Note I may change this - we may instead decide on the "winning" map before modding so as to limit the amount of mods necessary and allow things to be more focused. From that pool, the maps will be voted on and the most popular, (multiple criteria, such as creativity, ingenuity, relative fun), will be selected for release with the pack, and the mapper will be reimbursed accordingly.

I realize this system makes for competition. This is good. This is a driving force to help people to meet deadlines, hit targets, and create the best possible maps. I also realize this could feasibly mean you put a lot of work into a map and may or may not be reimbursed for it. For this reason I would urge people NOT to map for the sake of making money, and more for the sake of passion. If you love the map you craft, and you love the work you put into it, you're bound to create a far more impressive and interesting map than someone whom is doing it solely for the purpose of making some cash. That said, the maps you create here could easily be converted over for the pc version of the game and would more than likely be acceptable for ranking with some minor tweaks throughout.

At this point I would like to STRONGLY urge mappers to help with modding other maps. By doing so, you'll not only gain the respect and the occasional “I owe you one!”, but peppy and I will discuss a reward system here as well, quite likely involving kudosu and/or supporter tags. Nothing set in stone yet, but I'm working on it.

IMPORTANT: I feel this can't be overstated, so if you are mapping for osu!stream MAKE SURE you read the associated GOOGLE DOC for mapping rules and important differences between the pc client and the osu!stream app.

Feedback on this plan is wanted and welcome, but I'd like to get the ball rolling as fast as possible so please bring anything to the table ASAP.

The Summary:

Great changes are coming, and with it great new content and more fun to be had all around. More happy people. Stay tuned and feel free to message me and/or post in this thread with any ideas and feedback you may have.
