[Proposal] Include background artist in the metadata

It baffles me that it's really important to get the song's metadata right but nobody is looking at the other external resources included in mapsets. It would be appropriate to credit the author of the backgrounds used in maps and storyboards.

When I was 13 I put out some YouTube videos including artwork I didn't own. I thought it was OK since osu! didn't credit art either. So it has had a bad influence on me.

TBH, this makes sense. At least the artist should be credited in the beatmap description or even asked permission

it’s always nice to credit people that you use for bgs/sbs/etc, but it doesn’t really have any direct relation to mapping or the metadata of the mapset itself, and therefore is best left as a goodwill thing to do, rather than a necessity.

imo it's fine to just put the source in the description (which a lot of people do already) so this is kind of useless

its not a "nice things to do" it's absolutely necessary to list all sources you're using at all times. In a way osu! kinda endorses that it isn't needed to credit artists and that has a bad influence on its players.

am more leaning towards a feature request now to have a Sources box where people are advised to list sources they used (custom hitsounds / images). These will not play a part in ranking and are optional?

Most of the time it's really hard or even impossible to find out who made the background though

quote here is about putting this info in the description, which could be edited post-rank and isn't enforceable at all. if there were an actual metadata field for bg source, that'd make it more in line with artist/title metadata correctness, but that's also further out of reach

ah, my bad, but still imo it’s probably a bit too impractical and causes a lot of potential searching for no result in some cases

if you want to go forward with this idea, your best bet would be having it implemented in lazer. perhaps discuss it in #osu-web or #osu-lazer on the osudev discord (or their relevant git repos)?

realistically speaking, a change to the stable client/current osuweb for bg metadata is mostlikely not going to happen, sorry :(

metadata here isn't for crediting, it's for searching. I feel like it's a hard argument to say that searching by a beatmap's background's artist is useful...

if you want to give credit you can do so in the description already
