Weird Combos

I don't understand how the combos work, and I find it frustrating because it feels like it happens and sometimes it doesn't. It makes sense that it breaks when I miss or get 50 pts, but it would sometimes break when I get 100pts and not break at 50pt.
It has been bugging me for some time now and I was hoping this can be explained.

Normal hitcircles don't break combo when you get 100s or 50s. Sliderends can also be dropped safely without breaking combo, resulting in a 100 (and your combo being one less than the max combo because you didn't hit the sliderend). However, you will drop combo if you miss the sliderhead and follow the sliderball anyway (which results in a 100), or if your cursor is not in the slider follow circle when it crosses a slider tick or slider repeat.
