Last.fm is a website and a piece of software, that reads the tags from your player, and sends them to your profile's database. That way, you can record your listenings to a profile. People can easily see what you are listening, what sort of music you like, how actively you listen etc.

It's a great and easy way to find similar artists between your friends :D

Yes it does. It's also recorded on that artist's profile (if it doesn't exist, it will be created automatically)

Incorrect tags, however, are encouraged to be corrected and to be used in the right way.

Popular artists actually benefit from them being popular in last.fm

Oh, and also, last.fm also serves as a wiki for information about artists.

And last.fm is also good for new & unknown artists to share their music (combined with soundcloud ofc)
