What I said in the title, after the most recent forum change (It wasn't that recently, but I only now got frustrated enough to mention anything) I cannot find any way to go from the listing of threads to the first unread post in that thread. Was this removed (for some reason) or is the button just hidden?

It's a secret.
I'll be honest here for once, it was removed, though peppy's considering an alternative/reimplementing it.
Due to boredom, the forums are undergoing small changes for the better and worse spread out evenly for a consistent effect.
