SPOILER
Formula:
A(n) = 2.5[(n^2) - 41n + 468], n is any integer between & inclusive of 1 and 20.
Notations:
n = nth place. (e.g. n=1 ---> 1st place, n=12 ---> 12th place).
A(n) = points awarded for the nth place. (e.g. A(3) = 2.5[(3^2) - 41(3) +468] = 2.5[9 - 123 + 468] = 2.5(354) = 885).
Intuition:
Lower limit ---> 20th ---> 120pts
20th (+5pts) ---> 19th
19th (+10pts) ---> 18th
18th (+15pts) ---> 17th
17th (+20pts) ---> 16th
16th (+ 25pts) ---> 15th
... ...
5th (+ 80pts) ---> 4th
4th (+85pts) ---> 3rd
3rd (+90pts) ---> 2nd
2nd (+95pts) ---> 1st
Upper limit ---> 1st ---> 1070pts
Motivation:
The widely used voting system of A(n) = 21 - n scales poorly in terms of vote importance. E.g. 20th place ---> 1pt, 19th place ---> 2pts, that means one 19th place vote is worth two 20th place votes. In fact 16th place is worth 5 times that of the 20th place.
This goes against two principles of prestige that are critical yet neglected:
- The difference between being voted in & not being voted in should be significant. Having 20th place of 1pts and 21st place of 0pts ignores the fact that being voted in Top 20 as opposed to not, is huge difference in prestige, than if one is being placed at the 19th place or the 20th place. E.g. having passed an exam with 50/100 is vastly different than failing an exam with 49/100, even though one could argue that 49 & 50 is equivalent in terms of capability.
- The difference in score between each ascending player should matter increasingly, as the distinction between placings become more and more important. E.g. coming in at 55th or 56th in a race doesn't really matter, but coming in at 3rd or 4th is a huge deal, regardless of the possibility that the 3rd or 4th place runner is about equally good.
"So is this about skill or prestige?"
To be honest, community votes are directed at who is the most well-known & respected person in the community. Skill & popularity have undeniable correlations, and no matter what system you have it's always hinged on popularity since it's a community vote, so why argue day & night about the semantics.
"I really want the traditional scoring system, or I have a better system to suggest, what should I do?"
Simply comment in the post, and make sure you convey your ideas clearly and professionally. Rant comments will be ignored.
"I don't like this, I'm going to run a parallel vote thread!"
Sure thing. No one's gonna stop you. In the end there wouldn't be much difference in terms of individual votes themselves. And now you would have the responsibility of making a video
