what would be better? Mouse mode (full tablet) or a small area of the pen mode?
Alice S
Pen mode either way for osu! and a smaller area is better for osu, but you should reduce the size gradually so you can get used to it.
MMzz
Uh no, bigger area is deffinatly better.
Gives you more control over what you are doing.

Sure, but you need to move your hand more, smaller area is faster.
Derekku
Depends on the size of your tablet and your own personal preferences.

My tablet is like... 3x5 inches and I use the whole thing. When I started playing osu! in 2009, I used the default pen mode, but a few months later I figured out that I actually played a lot better with the mouse mode. Again, it's all based on preference!

Tell that to Cookiezi who uses full tablet area.

ALWAYS use pen mode for osu. If you don't you can run into issues where you say have a note to the far left but you don't have enough room on your tablet to move that far. It can become problematic. Pen mode give you absolute positioning meaning every point on your tablet will be a point on your monitor, it's good for building muscle memory and you won't run into silly issues like that.

Can anyone share some full area techniques? I have a small hand and its almost impossible for me to reach the four corners of full area without repositioning my wrist.

Start off small, about half your tablet, then keep working your way up in the sizes when you get comforable.
winber1
I use quite a small area. I've always sucked at large areas , and I've found my accuracy and control is really quite decent despite using a small area.

Derekku wrote:

Using someone else's configurations isn't going to help you get any better >_>

I've always liked using high sensitivity, so when i started osu! i had a high mouse sensitivity. When I got a tablet I set a small tablet area. Overtime I experimented with larger and smaller areas, and in the end I got something like this

fyi that area is approximately 3.2cm by 4.2cm (my screen resolution is 1366x768, but i used 1024x768 for osu! so the dimensions i gave you probably won't look perfectly proportional to the one in the picture)
Mesita
pen mode, full area... just get used to it and you are ready to go. Also try not to play with huge screen size.

Isn't this the same as using smaller area?
Mesita
depends if you use force proportions or not.

wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong!

You'll adapt to a bigger area and it makes your hand moving FASTER! + that valuable accuracy. Don't be fooled by smaller area.

kinda confused with this force proportions thingy, care to enlighten me ?

basically the same principle as mouse, low sens is better, large area is better

Can someone remedy this problem and tell us what it does?

This is what I got from bamboo's site.

"When Force Proportions is unchecked, the correct scale or proportions are not maintained. The selected tablet area is mapped to the selected display area. Drawing a cicle on the table may create an ellipse on the display screen. This is the default setting.

When Force Proportions is checked, the correct verical and horizontal proportions are maintained. Drawing a circle on the tablet results in a circle on the display screen. Depending on your settings, some portion s of the tablet active area may no longer be usable when this option is selected
."

I don't use a tablet, but based on that description it sounds like it forces the portions of the tablet, which can be used, to be cropped down to whatever fits the proportions of your screen resolution.

Well I use this and it seems perfect for both accuracy and speed:

I guess it all just comes down to preference.
Nyu_old2
Force proportions basically makes it so that the distance you move your pen up/down and left/right are equal to the distance your cursor is moved on the screen. That way your sensitivity isn't higher in the x or y direction.
RaneFire
Ye I just wanna add some 2 cents and say that if there's absolutely zero / no hindrance on your ability to hit the smaller notes at all, then size doesn't matter, but we're all human though, and generally larger movements are easier for 'human beings' to do by instinct.

In ancient times we didn't hunt animals by moving our fingers on a 1cm tablet area, we threw spears :D. Instincts will always favour larger muscular movements, but you can still train to play small, it just takes longer as its completely a logical process.
Zelmarked
It's like I'm learning to play osu all over again. I'm using a small area. Moving my pen above the detection area was a problem for me for a while.

force proportions must be ON or OFF? And Why?
T-Scarlet
I use a smalll area because im actually left handed but i just wanted to handle my pen on my right.
also, my hand is kind of small so i can't play with larger areas. no matter how much i try i just can't get used to it....
anyways, what i want to say is that it might not matter if you play it on large or small area.
just play it the way you feel comfortable..

It neither must be on or off, but whatever you prefer. If you turn it on, it will readjust itself to your monitor's ratio. If you leave it off it will stay your custom dimensions.

Let's say you craft yourself a 1:1 square in pen mapping but have a 16:9 resolution/monitor. With FP on, it will stretch out sideways till it's 16:9 and you'll get a rectangle proportionate to your monitor. A square would mean you move equal up and sideways to get to all 4 sides. A rectangle, FP for a 16:9, would mean your drawing area is 1 to 1 with your monitor but you have to move your pen more to the sides to accomplish the same movement as up or down.

The choice to make is whether or not you want congruency, or equivalent pen movement. I'm too much of a tablet noobie to give you a definitive answer either way.
Sync
don't use a small active area

work your way up slowly if it's too late (like me)
JAKACHAN
It's really personal preference but more top skilled players use a large-full area and adjust screen size.

Just pick a style that's comfortable to you and work with it and you will eventually start improving to the point where you can even play without a cursor.

Some people prefer to use just their wrists/fingers while others (Neruell, Myself, Uan [To an extent]) move their entire arms to compensate for a full area with a larger screen.

In the end it does come down to personal preference and there have been people who are good with small area (Rucker, Uan [Used to play smaller]), but in the end I have seen that even people who play with small area tend to improve when they move to a larger area.

I'm having a b* of a time floating. I'd like to disable tapping and go pen z/x so I can drag it and have more stability. But some are saying pen tap/x. Which one?
And is there a tablet using guide somewhere?
Fabi
Play whatever you feel comfortable. I have played with mouse mode, pen mode (small area) and full area with no proportion. Pretty much they have their pros and cons, as it will vary for different players.
Nyu_old2
Stability from floating your pen isn't too difficult to achieve, it just takes a couple weeks of playing. After a week of using mine I'm able to keep it pretty steady for small notes and I also use full tablet area. Very few people go with the pen tap and keyboard tap style, only person that comes to my mind that is really good at it is TTTL.
RaneFire
My entire hand floats above my tablet now, I have no clue how I got there :X I was touching the tablet all the time at first, hitting my pen nib against the surface accidentally. But now my forearm rests on the edge of my desk and my pinky finger just glides along the surface as a "distance sensor" lol. (Full area)
Zelmarked
I actually rediscovered disabling mouse clicks. So I "drag". The friction is almost non-existent. I'm now near where I left off with a mouse.

And playing with a tablet has a nice aesthetic to it. It's more fun. Intuitive.
Nyu_old2
I noticed a lot of friction if I try to drag. Probably because I use full tablet area, that's why I keep it hovered. It's just faster and easier to control for me.
ychao
Not dragging isn't really an option for me since I tap+kb

small area is certainly faster but you might find urself lose some accuracy

not true, area bigger 90% wacom bamboo pen full area, bad for fast maps with dt (if you use fullscreen mode)
Nyu_old2
I can do that just fine.

its only words, please made FC on airman to proof this words

P.S. Cookiezi's use full area, but he's play in window, and really its ~80% of full area...
P.P.S. before out from osu he decreased area to ~95%
Nyu_old2
How about you fc airman with your small area before you start attacking me with those words? Don't bs me like that.

Ps. I use the same area

My tablet die ^_^, 1 month to buy new

P.S. small area too bad, nice 50-85% on fullscreen or 70-100% if osu windowed...
Smaller area - many random errors, bigger area - can't jump very hard jumps...

I never said small area was bad. Re-read the conversation.
