Preference has a lot to say. What I can guarantee you with tablet, though, is wrist pains.

Been tableting for over 7 months. No problems what so ever.

The best way is to go and try it, maybe ask if any of your friends have it or something.

For me it was the other way around. I had horrible pains with mouse, not the tablet.

there are always exceptions to each rule. I'm not in pain over mouse, but then again, I'm using my entire arm to move it with really low dpi and I've done this for some time now

I don't have that O_o
I only had that when I tried minimal area once, but now I use big and don't have pain lol, though I do have wrist pain from using my keyboard lol
I think big area prevents pain
FisHie_old
I think that drugs prevent pain

It probably has to do with being able to relax more with a larger area as compared to concentrating your movements on a smaller area and trying to keep the same accuracy. At least, that's what I'd guess is the reason, I haven't actually used a small area myself, so correct me if this is total bullshit.

But about the main topic at hand, what you're good at is both about preference and what you're used to.
Being comfortable with one playing style and suddenly switching to something completely different will most certainly set your skill back.

Personally, I find tapping notes with my stylus and alternating tap/keyboard button on streams, along with keyboard only on slower streams to be the most comfortably playing style for me.

I played with mouse for like a week and bought tablet, now with tablet I can fc insanes, but with mouse I can't even play "normal" ones. So I guess you get used to one play style after some time, tho I know some people are good with mouse and tablet and I have no idea how they do it.

Wrist pain for first week, 300 BPM streams the week after.
Tablet doesn't improve your streams, only cursor control

Yeah, good luck with scratching your tablet and having a wiggly cursor and random misses.
dNextGen

Meh, if you have enough skill then tap/x can work just fine with minimal cursor shaking because of steady hands and almost no random misses at all.

Hmm, do any top players actually use tap+kb technique?

@Rena

coming from somebody who has used both a large and small active region, I can confirm that generally my hand tends to hurt more using the smaller region. Although, I grip the tablet pen tight which probably contributes to it. I hold it like I do a pencil so I'm used to it anyways...

the pain isn't bad (for me)

also in case you are wondering (OP) I use z/x alternate

Uhm I disagree, my tablet hand is completely relaxed at all times and I use this area. (iono if you consider this small :s) http://puu.sh/gYir
I think wrist pains just come from movements you're not used to making o;

Depends on how you place your tablet, how you hold the stylus. I use a full area and rarely suffer this.

Oh well ! Thanks for proving me wrong.

Well the idea of using the keyboard to hit notes and using the tablet/mouse to only control the cursor is there, so I'd consider it same?
Though tablet and mouse are two different things, obviously.

Don't go with "what top players use", go with "what you use better".
Everyone feel more or less confortable with different methods, it's a matter of try and see wich way you play better.
Use something just because other player use is like buy a shoe with other people's size for you to use.

main question remains:
playing with tablet for movement and ONLY keyboard for tapping notes = playing with mouse for movement and keyboard for tapping notes ?
yeah kinda is.
also you should see if you are able to stream fast enough with keyboard only, cuz there are enough people who can't do 200+bpm and have to resort to tablet tap, but if you're able to stream fast enough, you'll be fine with just keyboard only.
alternatively, you can use tablet tap for clicking single notes and keyboard for streams

experiment with it and see what you like most.

There's more than one way to play.

Tablets are pretty pricey though.
It's hard at first, and your wrists will hurt after some time, but you'll get used to it.

No pain, no gain.
