Feel free to move or sticky at your leisure.

STEP 1:
YOUTUBE.
http://youtube.com
It's really an awesome resource. If the song has a music video, it will be on youtube, and probably compressed at that golden point where the video looks decent but won't be a bitch to download.

STEP 2:
VIXY
http://vixy.net/
-OR-
YOUTUBEX
Kai Edit:YouTubex is dead
Here you have a choice. If you want to be certain you have compatibility, use Vixy, as it will convert it to an avi. If you want a faster and painless process, use youtubex and just use the .flv (osu does let you use flv files, right?) The version of ffdshow that I use has supports for .flv files, so I assume it will work.
If anybody knows of a simple way to strip the music from a video file, feel free to add that to reduce file size.

anyway,

STEP 3
F2 in editor, click Insert Background Video. Use the slider below to adjust the start time offset.

There you go! No programs had to be downloaded, and now all your beatmaps can have a video attached to it!

STEP 3
GOLDWAVE (or any other audio editor)
http://www.goldwave.com/
This step is to time the mp3 that you have with the video. Chances are your audio file and your video file are not in sync. Using Goldwave, it's as simple as opening the mp3, go to edit->insert silence. Then add and remove silence until you are satisfied.

There you go! Only one program had to be downloaded, and now all your beatmaps can have a video attached to it!
You can also adjust the offset for the video by (for now) manually adjusting the .osu file.

Add your video, save the file then look for the following line:
[Events]
1,<offsetMs>,"videofile.avi"
You can change the offsetMs then load the beatmap. Note that this will only work for offsets greater than around 500ms (the minimum sync precision for video in osu!)

I haven't edited your post gilrad, but you might want to add this :).

Also do you think this should be in beatmap help maybe?

Handy! Can you give it a negative offset?

That would remove one of the more annoying steps :)
peppy
You can :). Actually - positive will work with any ms amount. Its negative that needs to be about 500ms or greater. But this should suffice, I think. I'll be recoding this for storyboarding.

Updated. Also, if you think it fits in the beatmap help section, go ahead and move it, though this is mostly here to remind people how easy it is to add video for those who thought it would be a long and arduous process, and not so much a troubleshooting walkthrough.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/FLV_Extract

can use this to extract flv video then use virtualdub to reencode. osu! won't handle flv files directly, i think.

good guide here too

Should this thread be stickied, maybe? I quite like it, myself.

EDIT: Don't worry, it's fixed.

Hi, I've used VideoDub and have a suitable mp3 and avi file from a larger, longer file, but the avi file size is considerably large. What should I do to reduce the file size? Also, what additional software might be needed?

OSS (One-stop-software) Video Converter is an excellent program for video compression/conversion. You'll have to google for it though, as I don't know where to get it - my brother gave it to me.
Ichikira_old
can you make a video please ? i don't understand this tutorial =/

You may want to add this as an alternative to vixy:

This will probably be the noobest question on this thread but I have to ask,

*inhale* YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE??!??!?!?! :o (Oops left caps lock on ;P)

I have been going there for so long and I could actually download the videos from there?

or did i miss something in the Steps?

I have a youtube downloader that allows you to strip the song of its audio in the process of converting it out of an flv, it really is a wodnerful thing (it will also let you take just the audio, ive gotten a few songs that way C: ) it has different video types to choose from and then you choose between low, medium, optimal, and high qualities as well.

http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/
it requires a download unlike the places listed above, but for people who don't want to take those extra steps to remove the audio/compress it, or dont' have anything to do that, it really is a great thing to have. Its simple to use, too.
Wojjan
as a video-ripper, I always use http://www.mediaconverter.org, see for yourself
Chaos Anime X
I found a VERY NICE .ogm to .avi converter, which I'm going use in a beatmap

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=149026

It worked perfectly for me, and I hope it will for you too. It keeps the original video quality 100% and you can chose the audio bitrate.

ALSO
as far as stripping audio from the video to reduce file size, use VirtualDub, it works great
VirtualDub comes in a archive and you don't have to install anything, just extract and run the program.

I didn't know you can offset the video by opening the .osu file
so thanks :D
Jeffro
Do what I do. Get Sony Vegas. Open the Music Video or RAW (If you doing a anime song) and then check the timing with the mp3. and rerender the video so the offset is exactly the same :) Works for me :D

Erm, help please? I have an avi file but osu doesn't seem to like it. It tells me to check my codecs... what's that?

Go down to "Videos don't play! Why?"
DeletedUser_39338
hey, do the sound of the videos (if .avi) get automatically cut out when you put the vid into osu or is it layed behind the mp3 song of the map then?
hopefully it gets cut out automatically or it destroys the quality of my song ;D.

offtopic: something like a ingame video editor would be cool, where you can change the brightness and such things. anyway, that needs to be written in feature request board lol.

I added a video, well it looked bad with the beatmap. How do you remove it x.X?

From the edit screen - File, Open Song Folder and delete the video file from the folder. Make sure to make a Full Submission next time you update the map, or the video will pop up again.

Thank You :)

How do I sync up the video with the beatmap?
I tried to adjust the 'lead-in' time but it doesnt work.

nvm, figured it out.

im pretty sure im doing something wrong. when i click the Insert Background button and select the video, the video is in the beatmap's folder now. however, the video doesn't show up at all in the game or the editor. its just the background through the whole thing.

the video is almost 40 mb in size, is that the problem?
mattyu007
What format is the file?
COMPRESS IT to something less than 15 MB >:|
CptButtBalls
i compressed the original 313 mb video into a 40 mb .avi file with super. that was the best i could get and retain the quality, sry :(

Save the beatmap, then close osu! and reopen.

Size usually isn't a problem, but the max size for beatmaps with videos are 20MB.

i've got the video to work on osu! now, and i uploaded the original video myself onto youtube so that i could vixy it. cause im ghetto like that :D

It's possible to put more than 1 video in a map but video layers like pass and fail aren't supported by osu! yet. If you really want it then request it in the Feature Requests section.

No, remove the audio from the video and use a mp3/ogg for the song.

Yes, as long as the video doesn't have audio it's fine.
Somenoob_old
Ok, so i have the video up with the help of vix, but when i try to make mp3 only, it failed on me and the music simply would not play. The music comes form the video i have, but i need a way too extract it into audio only, but not get that very same error (and i have tried twice).

Try using the mp3 from your iPod or iTunes. The music doesn't have to come from the video.

Can osu support the h264 video in the background?
I can't convert my h264 video into h263 with Mediacoder 0.7 4616.
It's too hard to get that work.

Is there some way to add decent-quality videos onto beatmaps without lagging? Blurry and pixelized videos irk me, but whenever I try to put a video into my beatmap, they all come out very choppy, and the whole beatmap will lag, not just the video. I don't know if it's my computer's problem (I'm using a budget netbook, MSI U100), or is it just that Osu can't support good videos? I tried using a HD video, which obviously lagged, so I tried a 854×480, but it's no better. What seems to be the problem?

Dudes! Use Linkyoutube.com

The "F" buttons on my computer are used to do things like change to volume or turn the internet on/off...I can't use them in games. My computer can't read the ".osu" file without a special program or something. Can someone tell me how to insert a video?
[crimson]_old
http://www.convertfiles.com/ is also good to get videofiles for youtube videos.
