Music/Hitsounds Volume

Hello everyone .-.

I think that every song should be normalized(volume) before ranking and that way it would allow every song/map to have hit sound volume at 100% during the peak, that way one wouldn't need to compromise on music volume and could enjoy game better.

Thanks.

This can get quite restrictive and doesn't have a good use. It's up to the mapper to balance their hitsounds the way they feel it's right. If you feel like you need to adjust the volume and that it's not audible, post to the map's thread while the map is qualified (or before it is). It's about hitsound volume, not about song, and this is already in ranking criteria.

Also, don't use [Proposal] for your posts, please.

How so? If anything, its restrictive that you cannot have your music as loud as you would want to :<
(because of sub-par mp3/bad mastering)

That would be a huge pain and having this as a rule/gudeline would = BETTER QUALITY/consistency for game and would also be helpful for streamers who talk over music (atleast for those of us who dont have auto ducking and even if you do it would still better).

And also in general I think if you have hit sounds at 100% they should be OBVIOUS having to kill your music volume is just stupid :<

It would introduce a plenty of disqualifications claiming that the mp3's volume is not normalised because volume normalisation can be done in many slightly different methods and there would be a lot of figuring out how to detect the proper volume for each song (no, automatic normalisation in audio software wouldn't work for this). It would introduce a problem with very quiet songs that would have to have their volume boosted (therefore distorted too) and for songs that are loud in some parts and quiet in other parts, the quiet parts could become too quiet.

It wouldn't be any less that pain. What I implied is that this rule already exists, just the other way around and to fix this, we need BNs or modders to point it out in the map during or before the qualification. If this was a rule/guideline, they would have to do the exact same thing if it was not alright. Adjusting song so that hitsounds would work is wrong. Adjusting hitsounds and volume of inherited timing points is a correct solution to hitsound's volume. Changing the volume of the song is a lazy way to make your hitsounds audible, but it's not the right way to do it, we have tools to make hitsounds work. If some people don't use them or use them incorrectly, it's up to the modding community and BNs to handle this. And everyone's view on what's good in this regard is a little bit different. Forcing volume normalisation could also cause a disqualification of maps with proper hitsounds, just because "the volume is not normalised".

There's no reason to apply such a uniform rule if we already have the same rule, which instead of fixing what doesn't need to be fixed (song's volume), suggests fixing what is an issue (hitsound's volume and timing point volume)—that rule exists.

The question is, what's obvious? For some people, it might be that you can easily notice that the hitsound is added (because it stands out). For some people, it's if the hitsound is audible (so you'd only notice it's missing if you missed a note that had that hitsound). There are many different views on hitsound's volume and you cannot force people to think either of this way is correct. Both in some sense are correct, but there are also arguments against each of them, so it becomes more of a personal pick rather than something that you can 100% prove to be wrong or right. The general problem is if you cannot hear the hitsound at all, the rest depends on BN's and modding community's (respectively of those people who modded the map) personal opinion. Not everyone wants their hitsounds to significantly stand out (and there are good reasons), but some people want to (and there are also good reasons). Lowering the overall volume of the song would mostly lead to hitsounds standing out regardless of mapper's actual choices.

discussion has died here, so moving this to denied amendments

a rewrite of the "audio" section of the general rc may include a rule like this (assuming the "mp3 must be highest quality possible" rule doesn't already cover it)
