So I tabbed over to #modhelp earlier tonight and people were making Magic references and I was like ooh Magic and then we talked about Magic. Shiirn and I are thinking of maybe starting up an online playgroup using LackeyCCG, a program that lets you play online for free.

Use this thread to talk about your favorite trading card game. If Magic is your second favorite TCG then I guess that's fine too.

Magic players of all walks, come on out! I don't care if you play at the kitchen table or at the Pro Tour.

I'll start some discussion. Anyone play at the Innistrad prerelease last weekend? It was the most fun I've had in a sealed-deck event for a while.

Hamachi network info
name: osumagic
pass: aha?
(note: network has a max of 16 people I think. If we get more than that I'll work out something)
Shiirn
Note: Skype chat is very, very useful as the built-in chat function gets tedious when you're playing all over.

beware that if you play me, you're going to see counters flying like hail.

woot I'm totally up for that

I play Magic very casually. Started around Zendikar and play off and on. Used to do drafts a lot and played on Magic Workstation for a little bit. Remmy gifted me Magic 2012 on Steam recently and I've been playing that when I get the time. I like black+blue and black+red mostly. D:

I started from siege of mirrodin, but I got into a lot so I'm not totally inexperienced :P

haven't played much of it recently however

Started after Nemesis was released. Have like $3000-4000 worth of cards or something idk. Mostly from trading and prize winnings. I almost never actually buy cards, just occasionally buy singles that I either need or believe will jump up in price after I buy them. Also a DCI Judge.

Prefer playing drafts and sealed over any type of constructed.

Oh right and I always draft White.

Like always. Every time.
Shiro
Oh, a Magic thread.
I have a soldiers deck and a beasts deck, but both are quite outdated now. D:
I hate counters.

Soly: he actually means counters as in +1/+1 and charge. I play blue-white a good bit myself though! :)

I've been playing off and on since around Urza's Saga... been pretty solidly into it for the past 3½-4 years. I kick myself for having been inactive during Ravnica. I hear nothing but good words about that set.

I presume you use a blue & white deck then? If you like to use counterspell you probably like the annoying spells that white has also (pacifism, shackles) XD

This sounds like fun, I haven't been following magic since mirrodin so I might be a bit rusty.
+1/+1, -1/-1, any form of counters, not actual counter-cards. erm.
I tend to use a green mana ramp deck focused on getting "mana of any color" (it mostly works by starting off with using a basic land to start throwing around overgrowth and fertile ground) so that i can use the best counter creatures (i.e. ivy elemental) and using the best proliferation cards (such as steady progress, which is blue) to multiply those counters, along with charge counters on artifacts, so it's pretty much a "random shit thrown together" deck. It's nearly the same as the one i run in reality.

Combo decks are awesome (except splinter twin, it's boring imo)
adam2046
I bought a magic deck ages ago for some reason. Even though I don't play...
I enjoy occasionally playing Duels of the Planeswalkers, but that's about it.
Shiro
I didn't take any news from Magic after the Alara thing. I hate the new abilities and mechanics too much.

I have around 1000 cards (not counting my decks and beast collection), but I kinda quit Magic, so I'm trying to sell them. D:

I feel bad cause I don't actually own any physical cards ;_;
those
MTG isn't my thing. Yugioh is, though. So is Weiss Schwarz.

Not even gonna pretend to know what my collection is worth these days. It shot up pretty hard with the announcement of Modern though.

I like buying boxes and drafting the packs with friends. Drafts in general are really fun. My local game store does a draft of five packs of the new set at midnight the morning of a new set's release. Looking forward to the Innistrad one this week!

And I try to force white myself. It's my favorite color to play, both in limited and constructed. Blue and green about tied for second.

I always thought splinter twin was a pretty fun matchup. But then again, the deck I ran while it was big was pretty strong against that. Spellskite rules.

Why not MWS? (I must confess to never having tried LackeyCCG)

Also, EDH all the way.

Oh, incidentally, this username is a portmanteau of two of my favorite legendary creatures from like 5 years ago. Should be pretty obvious, though one's misspelled (derp).

Lackey is pretty much like playing a real card game (make mistakes, more freedom, etc), thereby it's much more effective, fun, and fast if you can have a voice chat going as well.

Workstation does not have multiplayer support. That's a deal-breaker for me.

EDH is alright. I prefer regular decks just because it's easier to build something more refined (I want my stupid deck to be stupid reliably).

Akroma + Tolsimir? Cool creatures there.

I've never actually bought cards because I don't have an endless amount of money to waste (except when Unhinged came out), but I've long read about Magic. I don't have any sort of experience to play really well, but I enjoy it every once in a while with decks temporarily loaned from my friends (I sort of help them playtest their new decks, in a way).

In theory, I like Blue, but in practice it seems I prefer Green decks more, since they tend to be a little more straightforward to play.

For a while I played Sealed Deck with a couple of guys from #bat. I really enjoyed the challenge of making the best of the cards you're given since by limiting my options, it actually allows me to build a deck some time in the next century. I'd be interested in doing it again with one of you guys.

tl;dr: I'm a very casual player with far more information than experience.

I'm posting here. \:D/

Actually MWS has a builtin-in multiplayer feature, but this one looks like it has a better interface (plus i always hated MWS' interface) might give this a try, i havent played in 3 years tho which is around when i stopped playing in real life too.

Just a question shouldnt this be in videogames? even tho a TCG isnt technically a "video"game the program is isnt it? i dont mind moving this there.
Rantai
Oh wow this reminds me of the deck I bought 10 years ago.

Last I checked it was blue...

Oh I play casually with friends, favouring a counter deck just to screw with everyone in 3-4 player games (I borrow these decks).
foulcoon
i see some forever alone type people playing this game at my university student centet daily. you guys are all forever alone?
Cuddlebun
I see them playing in the old student center where no one else ever goes. The game itself looks interesting. The people...not so much.
foulcoon
forever alone, right?
Hamuko
I have some Magic cards, mainly Black and White
I suck at playing though >:
lolcubes
Just posting to say that my decks don't work as you expect them to!

Cool, glad to hear you're interested! Shiirn and I played a bit last night and it worked pretty well. I've been using the program for quite some time, too, since I'm with another playgroup that uses it.

As for the thread, move it if you want. Doesn't bother me. Might not be a point now that people know to look for it here though.
Randy96
just went 4-0 against Shiirn :P
Shiirn
-started playing two weeks ago and can't name more than 50 cards if asked-

Ok ill move it then, it doesnt really seem to be a place for General Discussion anyways

uh uh uh uh

STEADY PROGRESS

(it's funny, i can have the effects of my entire deck and each card's name and what it does memorized to where i hold my hand with only the names shown, but when asked i can't even name what cards are in it except for one or two)

:( Don't worry, I've lightly kept up with Magic since Zendikar and know probably like 20 names if even. I'm still at the point where I will ask what every single fucking card played is/does aside from lands.

when I started playing magic I used blue.. which is Island and I just loved blue cause of all the Counter Target Spells everywhere. Then afterwards, it became blue and black. Why black? Cause it's just devastating when you can counter anything and destroy target permanent and it can't be regenerated. Basically, deny and destroy. It's the ultimate magic satisfaction. I guess you can do it with red as well with all the massive dmg cards but I dont' know. blue+black is pretty Awesome.

Besssss

inb4 "Choke" card

or care for a Last Word?

Brr, I think Innistrad isn't a positive step for Magic at all. I mean, zombies? Double-faced Werewolves cards? Am I playing a fantasy card game or an horror film?

I've seriously had more fun in the Zendikar ages. <3

And I totally LOVE red+black decks, or blue+black ones.

Have you played with Innistrad yet? I can't speak for Constructed yet but Innistrad Limited is fun as hell. The format is pretty slow (which I like) and a lot of the cards kind of feel like little self-contained minigames, yet the set manages to stay kind of cohesive. And the transform cards aren't as clumsy in practice as they were made out to be before the set came out.

And I think it's meant to be both a fantasy card game and a horror film...
Backstabber
Do you have to register your own Magic cards? What is the official way to contact each other? Got Skype, Mumble and Vent. Would be up for some casual playing.

last word is terrible because you just counter the original spell again instead of countering last word
akrolsmir

Lybydose wrote:

Well, if a blue mage is dropping a bomb you can ignore their counter-backup with Last Word.

But yeah it's pretty terrible. Hinder ftw.

Oh, think we could get enough people together for an Innistrad draft?

I'd be up for trying that sometime, sure. I've used this before: http://tappedout.net/mtg-draft-simulator/ and it worked pretty well. Only problem is that it includes bots to fill in the empty slots and they draft stupidly... they draft just the best card instead of building a deck, so it's like having a bunch of hate/rare-drafters at the table. If any of you know of a good draft sim that doesn't add bots, I'd be willing to give it a try.

We would need to find a way to coordinate and find a meetup time/place though. I can start an IRC channel for magic if you like (not on osu!'s server though... can't create channels on there freely for whatever reason). I also have Skype and Mumble, but I usually don't turn either on unless I'm about to use it for voice chat for something I arranged somewhere else.
Nactra
for drafts, you may want to try http://www.ccgdecks.com . it's up to you to chose to add or not to add bots and it runs smoothly if all the players are reactive (and no bots are here).

i quit playing a few months ago and i've been laughing hard at the recent banwave. after giving us the worst standard in history (caw-go bull)
they are saying out loud that they have no idea of what they are doing. mental misstep legacy ban is the most fun, they had finally managed to warp meta but no, we're back for the previous format.i liked it, but sersiouly it has been solved a long time ago and needs some refreshing air.
Drakari_old
I wasn't paying much attention because most of the content of the thread was technical terms I didn't understand anyway, but if any of this thread involved something that would let me use my old physical cards to play against someone I'd be happy to.
Lybydose
Modern would be so much better if they just unbanned a bunch of the cards.

ie Jace, Misstep, Bitterblossom, Ancestral, Rite of Flame, Ponder, Preordain, Dark Depths, Jitte, Chrome Mox, Green Sun, maybe Top

ok sure you'd have a bunch of powerful decks return but they'd be kept in check by all the other powerful decks that return you know. Especially since misstep just counters half the broken shit anyway

They just made control suck ass by banning everything that control decks rely on, so that made it nothing but combo. Then they banned everything combo relied on while at the same time hitting cards good in control, so that made the format still nothing but combo because there's still splinter twin and living end and control sucks even more.

At least there's legacy.

Yeah, I can understand some of the bans in Modern but I would rather they had let the format evolve organically rather than trying to mess with it so hard from day 1. (Also I want to use my Jaces :()

Well, you can build your real-life decks in the deck editor in Lackey with no problem. I do that some myself.
