You sign onto a part time contract while you're in school, then when the semester is over, you have more free time and can take on the contractual maximum number of weekly work hours

But if you started working fulltime hours shouldnt that entitle you to the full time benifits?

No, it doesn't just rollover/upgrade/evolve, you need to basically reapply

except internal applications tend to be much easier/faster/informal. But it doesn't happen automatically. Not to mention fulltime for 2-4 months isn't standard full-time, you only get something like that through a contract.

And (at least in Canada) contract workers have little to no benefits unless an employer specifically calls for them (this is normally done to appear a more attractive prospect than competitors). Contract workers don't even have laws like Just Cause to back them up.
Cuddlebun
depending on the individual business, also, they usually try as hard as they can not to give full benefits. I know McDonalds in particular tries their hardest to keep everyone but the managers at parttime so they don't have to give out benefits.

but I am parttime because I'm considered a fulltime student or something.

People should be educated. Not anyone's fault but their own for the ignorance of the net.

Applies to university students too. Though I'm yet to see that payment being used for university purposes...
