Why hasn't anyone suggested this? Some searching turned nothing up.
I prefer to map entirely alone, without the distractions of getting highlighted on #osu or #modhelp or receiving generic PMs. However, i'd also like to be able to chat with (certain) online friends if possible.
Something as simple as not appearing on the in-client online user list (F9) fixes everything, heck, even a forced-afk (where your status bar displays afk no matter what you're actually doing) would likely do the job. A toggle in options like "appear invisible?" would work.
Bancho would still see you connected and would work as usual, you just wouldn't appear on the connected users' list.
I know that the irc probably wouldn't work like that, but the user bar on F9 is where people usually get their impulse to pm you randomly, heh.

1) Invisible mode that will remove all highlights for yourself (or not notify you if you get PMed?) combined with
2) not appearing on the F9 user list - (this entails not notifying people who have you on friends that you have logged in {unless they're mutual?} and not being spectate-able?)
