pUpdater hangs checking for updates in Vista

When I run osume.exe for the first time, it opens a new IE7 window with the changelog instead of being displayed above like in the screenshot. The app will stall "Checking for updates.." indefinitely. Firewall is off.

It seems you need to turn "protected mode" off on Internet Explorer (probably under Internet Options > Security)

No - the WebBrowser object I use in pUpdater uses the Internet Explorer engine, so this is definitely the source of the problem.

Sorry to be annoying, but something happened recently, and now I have to download Osu! on a different computer, it gives me the empty IE window, but my laptop isn't Vista. What do I do in this case?
