Simply put, osu! standard hitsounds are determined by how well they work on the osu! standard map, and these don't always translate well in Taiko mode.
I'm suggesting an optional, taiko hitsound set for an osu! standard map, that uses beat placement as usual, but allows a mapper to map the taiko hits properly without having to make a taiko-specific map.
